Brunch honors Meals on Wheels volunteers By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Meals on W heels showed their appreciation for their volunteer drivers on March 18 by hosting a brunch. This is the first year Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County hosted a brunch for the drivers. They wanted to do something to show how much the drivers mean to the organization and have a day to celebrate the drivers. Jerry Martin, driver of 16 years, has been a loyal volunteer and drives whenever he
is asked. Martin, who previously taught for the Boardman Schools, joined Meals on Wheels because of the respect he has for the generation ahead of him. “Once I retired, I wanted to pay back,” said Martin. “I think I got another year or two in me.” Martin said the generation they are serving have made it possible for people now to have a good life. They are strong characters with strong values, which is something he admires. Volu nteers for Mea ls on W heels are more than just
people who deliver food. They provide a watchful eye to their customers and become friends with them in the process. Severa l volunteers have made friends with the people they serve meals too and are happy to see each other when the food is being delivered. Many of the
customers look forward to seeing the volunteers. “We couldn’t do it without them. We have 35-37 volunteers that come five days a week,” said Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County president Kathy Esseniyi. The brunch provided an op-
portunity for all of the volunteers of Meals on Wheels to get together and have a good time. The Meals on Wheels board enjoyed having the chance to show how much they appreciate their drivers, and that Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County wouldn’t happen without them.

The annual Taste of Austintown event, hosted by the Austintown Junior Women’s League, took place on April 1 at Immaculate Heart of Mary. Sixteen food vendors served attendees. One of those vendors was the Austintown Board of Education table. There to dish out items, which included a “build your own” salad bar and fiesta bean dip, was Board of Education Vice President Kathy Mock. Mock dedicated her night to serving those in attendance at the event in addition to fulfilling her responsibilities as a member of the junior league. The board and administration would also like to extend a special thanks to Austintown Food Service Director Tascin Brooks and Tammy Wilt for preparing the dishes and the table.

Tyler Wibly of Austintown is an 18-year old who was born with Cerebal Palsy. He has undergone 17 surgeries, including a spinal surgery and will have his last surgery on April 20 of this year. Wibly needed a van to transported he and his wheelchair around. His family’s landlord purchased a van and a lift was installed. The Austintown Lions Club made a donation for the van lift, enabling Wibly to enter and exit the van. The family is open to donations due to the many expenses that are involved. Pictured with the van are, from left, Wibly’s mother, Jennifer Polcha, Tyler Wibly and his father, Nick Wibly. Pictured in the back is Austintown Lions Club Vice President Bob Melcher.

The essay contest winners, charity representatives and Austintown Kiwanis Club President took a picture together after the students read their essays out loud on March 15 at Austintown Middle School.
Six students chosen as winners for essay contest By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Austintow n K iwa nis Club announced the winners of the second annual Sixth-Grade Essay Contest on March 15 at Austintown Middle School. Sixth-grade students were asked to write an essay answering the question “If you had $50 to give to the local charity of your choice, which one would you choose to donate to and why?” There were 251 essays that covered 55 different charities the sixth-grade students at Austintown Middle School wrote about. The essay was optional for the students, but more than half of the sixth grade participated in it. The essay contest was sponsored by the Austintown Kiwanis Club and the Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU). “It’s part of their standards, so we wanted to line it up with a grade level where their standards have them do research and write a report on that research,” said Austintown Kiwanis President Mariel Sallee.
The six students were chosen by a committee consisting of Kiwanis and Austintown Fitch Key Club members. The students had about four weeks to research and write their essays then about another four weeks for the essays to be graded. After the essays were graded and the winners were chosen, Sallee walked to each classroom and had all of the students who wrote an essay raise their hand. He then would tell the students someone in their class is a winner and when the name was announced, the whole class clapped and cheered for that student. “I was excited that I was going to help the charity out,” said one winner, Johnny Ruggles, who wrote about the Youngstown Lions Club. None of the students knew they would receive $50 to give to the charity they wrote about. They were surprised, but excited, to have the opportunity to give a representative from their charity a check for $50. Representatives from the six different charities attended the assembly to meet with the students who wrote about their
charity. Some of the representatives who came awarded the students with a certification or something else to show their appreciation for the essay. One student, Dev in, who w rote about St. Vincent De Paul, received a President’s Award and t-shirt from Tom Williams, Mahoning County President of St. Vincent De Paul. The winning charities were Youngstown Lions Club, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, Lifebanc, Hospice of the Valley, St. Vincent De Paul and the American Heart Association. The winning students were awarded with a goodie bag provided by ASECU which contained a ticket to the Austintown Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast, a $25 gift card and other items. There were also 30 students chosen at random at the end of the assembly that received a gift card for $5 for their essays. “The Kiwanis Club will continue to do this and I’m sure that AMS is proud to host the event and provide us with the students that will write the essays,” said Sallee.
