In front of a standing-room only crowd, members of the seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls basketball teams took on members of the CVMS staff in a battle for bragging rights. C V MS home e c onom ic s teacher Angela Alexandrides and CVMS Principal Judd Rubin coordinated the event. “This event has a great atmosphere. It gives the students a chance to see our staff in a different light and it’s a lot of fun for everyone. And it provides a bit of fun before the students start their state tests soon. We built off last year’s successful game and will continue the tradition here at CVMS,” Alexandrides said. The event also offered a 50/50 raff le with members of the school’s student council helping to sell tickets. Concessions were also available, with CVMS staff members donating items and students manning the booth. According to Alexandrides, all money raised at the event will

staff for 10 minutes of play, with the eighth-grade girls following. The seventh-grade boys then took the court for 10 minutes of play, with the eighth-grade boys following, having their turn against the staff. At halftime, the staff was up one bucket. To start the second

half, the seventh-grade boys and girls combined to go against the staff and then the eighth-grade girls and boys joined forces to battle the staff. After a hard fought contest, with a back and forth score, the CVMS staff came out on top of the competition.

CHC third-graders showcase skills at gym show

By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Third-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School presented their annual Third Grade Gym Show in the high school gymnasium on March 9. Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education instructor, readied the students for their performance. The students performed two shows, one in the morning for the C.H. Campbell student body and one in the evening for their families and friends. The shows featured routines which showcased the physical education skills the students have mastered. The theme of the show was “Thanks for the Memories,” which was inspired by Ohio sports teams who had some successes in their respective seasons in the last year. Teams highlighted were the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio State Buckeyes football team, Youngstown State University Penguins football team and the nearby Pittsburgh Penguins. The students entered the gym to “Fly Now,” the theme from “Rocky” and did a lap around the gym and formed long lines in front of their audience. Several students introduced each activity as the students performed throughout the show. The students put their physical education skills on display by showing off their jump rope skills, volleyball toss skills, Taekwondo moves, football moves,

basketball passing skills and basketball dunking and shooting skills. Music was a big part of the show, with several songs accompanying the students as they performed. While the students performed The Wave, “Wipeout” by the Beach Boys was playing, and while they showcased their jump rope skills, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” by Justin Timberlake blared from the speakers. During the volleyball skills portion of the show, “Hair Up” by The Trolls played, and during the Taekwondo demonstration, “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas was played. For the football skills drill, the “NFL on Fox” theme was played, and during the basketball portion of the show, “Strike It Up” by Blackbox and “Space Jam” by Quad City DJ’s was played. Haurin introduced Br yce Roberts as the Michael Jordan of C.H. Campbell, and Roberts proceeded to wow the crowd with this basketball dribbling skills and finished his portion of the show with an awe-inspiring slam dunk on a portable hoop. “Pregame Pump-Up” played while Roberts showcased his skills. Haurin then asked all students to join the third-grade students in singing C.H. Campbell Elementary School’s Alma Mater. In a tribute to the Pittsburgh Penguins winning the Stanley Cup, the students “skated” on foam rectangles and spelled out PENS in the middle of the gym, while two students in hockey

gear followed them and made goal shots to end the tribute. The song “First Snow” by TSO accompanied the students. To honor the Cleveland Indians, the students sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” with many of them sporting Indians hats and jerseys. To continue the tribute, the students acted out a scene from “Major League” featuring Wild Thing Ricky Vaughn, complete with

a student dressed as Vaughn, all the way down to his glasses. “Wild Thing” by Troggs played throughout the performance. For their finale, the students honored the NBA Champions Cleveland Cavaliers to the song “We Are The Champions” by Queen. The students gathered in the middle of the gym, waved glow sticks and raised a Cavaliers banner to honor the team. Haurin thanked the students

to being a good audience and thanked everyone who helped make the show a success. “Thank you for being a good audience this morning. I think our third-graders did a tremendous job and I thank them for all their hard work. I would also like to thank the third-grade teachers for all their help. I do not do this alone and they provide a lot of help and support,” Haurin said.

Brunch honors Meals on Wheels volunteers By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Meals on W heels showed their appreciation for their volunteer drivers on March 18 by hosting a brunch. This is the first year Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County hosted a brunch for the drivers. They wanted to do something to show how much the drivers mean to the organization and have a day to celebrate the drivers. Jerr y Martin, driver of 16 years, has been a loyal volunteer and drives whenever he is asked. Martin, who previously taught for the Boardman Schools, joined Meals on

Wheels because of the respect he has for the generation ahead of him. “Once I retired, I wanted to pay back,” said Martin. “I think I got another year or two in me.” Martin said the generation they are serving have made it possible for people now to have a good life. They are strong characters with strong values, which is something he admires. Volu nteers for Mea ls on W heels are more than just people who deliver food. They provide a watchful eye to their customers and become friends with them in the process. Severa l volunteers have made friends with the people they serve meals too and are happy

to see each other when the food is being delivered. Many of the customers look forward to seeing the volunteers. “We couldn’t do it without them. We have 35-37 volunteers that come five days a week,” said Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County president Kathy Esseniyi. The brunch provided an opportunity for all of the volunteers of Meals on Wheels to get together and have a good time. The Meals on Wheels board enjoyed having the chance to show how much they appreciate their drivers, and that Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County wouldn’t happen without them.
