Women’s self-defense and self-protection seminars There will be women’s self-defense and self-protection seminars for those who are ages 18 and older (children may attend with adult) on April, 15 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and April 16 from 1:30–2:30 p.m. at Master Park Martial Arts Center, located at 212 BoardmanCanfield Road in Boardman, instructed by Grand Master Park. Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s eighth grade students had to the opportunity to hear from several of the Valley’s local leaders. The students enjoyed a glimpse into our court system and the nation’s legal principles from people who deal with them daily. The American History Class spoke with Attorney Patty Wagner, Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences at Youngstown State University, and Judge Shirley Christian of the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court about the Bill of Rights and the criminal justice system. Mahoning County Juvenile Magistrate Anthony D’Apolito spoke to students about the role of the Juvenile Court. Judge Gene Donofrio of the Ohio 7th District Court of Appeals and Attorney Jeff Hendrickson, court administrator, discussed the United States Bill of Rights along with various aspects of the legal system. Boardman Park’s Community Garden While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the Community Garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 foot by 20 foot garden plots began on April 11 at the Boardman Park Office located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only and only one plot per gardener/family. Garden season begins May 1 and runs through Nov. 15. Community Cup season begins with Kick-Off Breakfast The 27th annual Youngstown Area Community Cup season begins with a kick-off breakfast on April 19 at 7:30 a.m. in the Youth Lobby at the Central branch of the Youngstown YMCA. Interested companies and organizations are invited to attend the breakfast to learn about program changes and benefits of participation. There is no charge for the breakfast. The Community Cup is a program of the Youngstown YMCA that has involved more than 80 businesses and organizations and thousands of employees participating in 18 athletic events. The Community Cup aims to create an awareness of the importance of physical fitness for individuals and participating companies. Additionally, the program creates an attitude of teamwork and pride within each sponsoring organization and promotes community spirit. The 2016 Community Cup will take place on Sept. 10, with preliminary events to take place the weekends of Aug. 12-13 and Aug. 26-28.

Youngstown Saxon Club to host dinner The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on April 17 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This will be the club’s last dinner until September. The price of $9.50 (children $5) includes dessert and coffee, tea or soda. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Boardman librar y hosted a Farewell to Downton Abbey event on March 23. Guests came to the library dressed in their best “Downton Abbey” outfits to bid farewell to the show “Downton Abbey” after six seasons of being on-air. Those who came dressed had the chance to win a prize for a

costume competition. Boardman librarians, Marnie Alvarez and Judy Jones, worked together to organize the Downton Abbey event. There were also five volunteers from the Poland and Austintown libraries who came to help during the event. “There’s refreshments, beautiful cupcakes, there’s a craft, a book table with all sorts of stuff ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Down-

ton Abbey’ related. There’s a nice slide show, a game, trivia,” said Jones. The two-hour event consisted of games, contests, craft, snacks and a couple prizes to be handed out. The guests could use different materials to make a “Downton Abbey” bookmark to take home with them after the event. At the end of the event, the winners of the costume contest

were announced. The five categories open to win were: best upstairs piece, best downstairs piece, most traditional, best in show and best character portrayal. Each of the winners received a prize that was related to “Downton Abbey.” Although the show has come to an end, the fans had the opportunity to gather together, make new friends and celebrate “Downton Abbey.”

Books, purses and jewelry on sale at church The UMW of Poland United Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, will be having its “Books, Bags and Bling Sale” on April 23 from 9 a.m. until noon. There will be books, purses and jewelry. Some things will have prices, many will be a donation.

MCCTC opens Summer Camp registration

Seventh-grade students at Boardman Center Middle School recently had the opportunity to speak with State Representative John Boccieri. The assembly was set up by history teachers Brandy Barborak and Sherri Mangapora in order to allow students to meet and speak with their state representative, as well as to help them learn more about state government and various political issues. Students asked a variety of questions regarding state testing, Boccieri’s military career and the recent water issues in Sebring. Boccieri is pictured here addressing the students.

West Side cats will be hosting a Father’s Day raffle featuring a 48 inch Insignia LED TV. The drawing will be on June 18, and proceeds will be used for the group’s spay and neuter program. Robinwood Lane Elementary nominated as National Blue Ribbon School Robinwood Lane Elementary School is a nominee for the National Blue Ribbon School Award. The Ohio Department of Education chose Robinwood as one of 14 public schools in Ohio to nominate to the US Department of Education. The ODE nominat ion is based on student achievement, as rated by the 2014-2015 Ohio School Report Card accountability measures. The next step for Robinwood is for the staff to compile and submit required application materials to the USDE by the end of April. The

National Award winners will be notified sometime in September. No one has a bigger smile than Robinwood Principal, Don Robinson. He recently said he was proud of his students and the school staff. After he received word from ODE about the nomination he immediately put out this message to his staff: “This is a rare and distinct honor we have earned together through hard work, team work, talent and dedication. I am very proud of all of you.” Robinwood has been rec-

ognized consistently as a high performing school in Ohio for years. T he Boa rd ma n K iw a n i s Club hosted its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Boardman Park on March 22 for kindergarten students from four Boardman elementary schools. Kindergarten classes from Robinwood Lane, Market Street, West Boulevard and Stadium

Drive Elementary Schools participated in the egg hunt. More than 5,000 eggs were placed all around the playground at Boardman Park. The eggs were filled with small candies and each student could collect four eggs. Two schools visited Boardman Park in the morning while the other two schools arrived in the afternoon.

The students waited outside of the playground fence listening to instructions before they went to collect their eggs. The Easter Bunny made a special appearance and led the students into the playground so they could pick up their eggs. Baby Bargain Boutique to be May 21 Boardman Park will be having its semi-annual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 21 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. This event will feature products “sold by Moms for Moms.” Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for a local Food Bank. For those who have items to sell, the park will start taking reservations for table rentals on April 21 for Boardman residents and April 22 reservations will be open to everyone. Table reservations can be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. Boardman residents pay $25 for a spot under the pavilion table and $20 for an outside spot. Non-residents pay $30 for a spot under the pavilion table and $25 for an outside spot. Outside spots must bring their own table and may use a pop-up tent. The park will offer table and chair rental to those who need them. Each buyer may only reserve two tables/ spots. This event is not open to commercial vendors. they went running passed him out of excitement to gather eggs. The Boardman Kiwanis Club hosts this egg hunt every year, along with several other annual events, for the students of Boardman to have fun and get outside of the classroom.

“Between the two classes, about 35-50 children come through,” said Roy Wright, Boardman Kiwanis Club president. When the children finished collecting their eggs, they went into the pavilion for a treat from the Kiwanis Club. There was a chocolate rabbit for the children to eat and a juice box for them to drink, along with the candies

they got in their eggs. After the children finished their treats and met with the Easter Bunny, they went back to school to finish their day. Wright said that the event makes many of the volunteers remember how much fun they had participating in egg hunts when they were children. “It makes you want to be a kid again,” said Wright.

Mrs. Gessner is the daughter of Louis Veltri of Westerville, Ohio, and Kathleen Veltri of HIlliard, Ohio. Her husband is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Larry J. Gessner of Canfield. The bride wore a strapless white lace gown with a sweetheart neckline and beaded embellishments in a fit and flare style that featured ribbon tulle layers. The bride’s cousin, Alexandra Iverson, was maid of honor. Event raises funds for Habitat for Humanity The Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors is inviting the public to a Reverse Raffle and Dinner fundraiser that will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley. The event will take place on April 28 at The Embassy, located at 5030 Youngstown Poland Road in Boardman. The evening will get underway with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and then the drawing for the $4,000 grand prize. Tickets are $100 for dinner and a raffle ticket, and $50 for each additional dinner. Only 150 raffle tickets will be sold. Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club meeting on March 17, and this month was all about pizza. Ly nn Zocolo, a horticulture educator at Mill Creek MetroParks, led the class and taught the children that each of the ingredients in pizza come from some type of plant.

“We are going to play a couple games, there’s a story to read and the sensory activity is playing with pizza dough,” said Zocolo. Sprout Club started out with the children working on a coloring sheet until everyone arrived and was ready to start. Once all of the children were settled down, Zocolo started the class. She asked the children if they ate any plants for lunch, then she

brought out a flower that came apart so the children could identify the different parts. After identifying the plant parts, the children played a game that involved making their own pizza. There was a large die and each number represented a different pizza topping. Children would take turns rolling the die and whatever the number was that it landed on, the children would draw that

topping on their paper plate. When the game was over, the children would then get their own piece of dough to play with. There were rolling pins, flour and cookie cutters for the children to use to create whatever they wanted. Snacks were passed out at the end of class for the children to enjoy before they went home. The next Sprout Club meeting will be April 21.

Yearly basket auction The Tri-Gold Prime-Time Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association is sponsoring its yearly basket auction. This event will be hosted on April 23 at Christ Our Savior (St. Nicholas Church) in the Great Hall. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. There will be a drawing at 3 p.m. The $5 admission includes a full sheet of raffle tickets and door prize entry. Free light refreshments and cash door prizes are available. The first prize winner will receive $100 and the second prize winner will receive $50. A special raffle, cash hat raffle and a 50/50 raffle will also be featured. All proceeds go to the Tri-Gold Chapter’s education program.
