One of the guests at the vase class started shaping her clay in the design she wanted her vase.
Fellows Riverside Gardens molds friendships and vases By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a stoneware windowsill vase class on March 15, taught by Lynn Cardwell. Students who attended the class had the opportunity to create their own vases with the help of Cardwell. The vases were made out of clay and texture was added by using different fabrics, leaves and other objects. The students would start with clay that they had to soften and mold into the shape they wanted. Before the clay set, the different materials available for texture, would be put in the softened clay. The textures are what made the vases original and personalized to each person. “Onc e t he clay i s d r ie d they’re fired once to a bisque,
and then I’ll glaze them. Then I would fire them a second time and it turns the glaze into like a glass coating,” said Cardwell. There were finished vases and partially finished vases for the students to look at. They could then try and mold their vases to look like the examples or mold it into their own shape. The vases were to be narrow enough to set on a windowsill, but large enough to put a plant or other object inside. Waiting for the clay to dry and then going through the entire firing and glazing process takes about four to five weeks to get the completed vase. After Cardwell finishes the vases, the students can Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci come back to Fellows River- The guests that attended the Stoneware Windowsille Vase class with Lynn side Gardens to pick it up and Caldwell worked on softening their clay before they molded it into the shape they wanted. bring back to their homes.
Canfield’s music education program receives national recognition The Canfield Local School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Canfield joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016. The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate
outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. “A well-rounded education is a priority in Canfield, we have an outstanding musical program from elementary to high school. Our staff is top notch and our students are dedicated” said Alex Geordan, Superintendent. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models
for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Canfield answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community musicmaking programs. Responses were verified with school offi-
cials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. This award recognizes that the Canfield Local School District is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The act recommends music and the arts as important elements of well-rounded education for all children.
