Daughters spend special evening with their fathers By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary school hosted its annual Father Daughter Night on March 10. The Father Daughter Night consisted of painting, seeing and petting live animals, eating a meal and ending the night with some dancing. The daughters and their fathers, grandfathers, uncles or whatever influential male they brought to the event, split up at the beginning of the night so each person get could to each station. The fathers and their
daughters could eat pizza supplied by Marco’s Pizza, get their pictures taken, paint blank tiles with the animal of their choice on them and then sit in the gym and learn about different animals that Ryan Marlin from Harbor Pet Center brought in. Father Daughter Night at Union has been a school tradition for many years. The PTO is responsible for putting in the hard work and effort into making the night successful. “We had a lot of great moms here volunteering to help and we had I’d say close to 95 percent of
our girls here tonight, which is incredible,” said Union principal Michael Masucci. Several community members came together to help the night turn out well. Harbor Pet Center employee, Ryan Marlin, brought in a rabbit, boa constrictor and puppy for the girls and their fathers to pet. Three girls also won a beta fish to take home. The music and entertainment ending the night was provided by Randall Martin from Randall Martin Entertainment. “I’m looking for the memory value that they’re going to get
from the performance,” said Martin. “I tell people ‘It’s not sign the contract and see you next year, it’s sign the contract and we become friends,’ I really do pride myself on that.” To end the night, Martin played several songs for the guests to dance to. The final song of the night was “Cinderella,” by Steven Curtis Chapman. “I think pretty much every girl from the school is here, I’m very happy with the turnout. I think the girls loved it,” said Heather Medvec, the PTO chair member in charge of organizing the night.

their own pizza. There was a large die and each number represented a different pizza topping. Children would take turns rolling the die and whatever the number was that it landed on, the children would draw that topping on their paper plate. When the game was over, the children would then get their own piece of dough to play with. There were rolling pins, flour and cookie cutters for the children to use to create whatever they wanted. Snacks were passed out at the end of class for the children to enjoy before they went home. The next Sprout Club meeting will be April 21.

Fellows Riverside Gardens molds friendships and vases at pottery event By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a stoneware windowsill vase class on March 15, taught by Lynn Cardwell. Students who attended the class had the opportunity to create their own vases with the help of Cardwell. The vases were made out of clay and texture was added by using different fabrics, leaves and other objects. The students would start with clay that they had to soften and mold into the shape they wanted. Before the clay set, the different materials available for texture, would be put in the softened clay. The textures are what made the vases original and personalized to each person. “Once t he clay is d r ied they’re fired once to a bisque, and then I’ll glaze them. Then I would fire them a second time and it turns the glaze into like a glass coating,” said Cardwell. There were finished vases and partially finished vases for the students to look at. They could then try and mold their vases to look like the examples or mold it into their own shape. The vases were to be narrow enough to set on a windowsill, but large enough to put a plant or other object inside. Waiting for the clay to dry and then going through the entire firing and glazing process takes about four to five weeks to get the completed vase. After Cardwell finishes the vases, the students can come back to Fellows Riverside Gardens to pick it up and bring back to their homes.

Poland police officer Steve Kent came to Poland After School to help the children catch a leprechaun. He gave them investigation tips and helped them set a trap. So far, the lucky leprechaun has managed to elude them. The Pot o’ Gold “Rolos” had the children smiling, and the detective tips gave the group some logical steps to consider. While they may not have met the leprechaun, they made a new friend in police officer Kent. Neighbors | Submitted
