JCRC announces winners of annual Student Holocaust Writing and Art Contest As part of its 25th annual Community Holocaust Commemoration for Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance), the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area

Jewish Federation announced the winners of its Student Holocaust Writing and Art Contest. Students in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties and Western Pennsylvania from grades 7-12 were invited to submit an original piece of poetry, narrative composition, art or media. Winners from Boardman are (poetry, grades 9–10) Sehar Khan (winner), (poetry grades, 11–12) Cole Christman (winner), (essays, grades 11–12) Siena Larrick, (winner), (art, grades 9–10) Alayna Cuevas (winner) and Lexis Bradley (second place).

Akron Children’s Hospital now offers adolescent medicine services in Boardman.

Adolescent Medicine Specialist Dr. James Fitzgibbon has begun seeing patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus, located at 6505 Market Street, Building C. He is available for patients, ages 9-24, on the first and third Wednesday afternoons of every month. Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

The cost for the 5K is $30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Groups plant pinwheels for abuse prevention awareness

Three local groups joined together to begin National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month on April 3 with a planting of pinwheels in front of Boardman Park.

The groups, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center, Mahoning County Children Services and East High School’s Junior ROTC, planted pinwheels in

front of St. James Meeting Room near the South Avenue entrance to Boardman Park. Pinwheels are the symbol for child abuse prevention.

“It’s a reminder for the community to report child abuse when they see it or suspect it,” said Jennifer Kollar, public information officer for Mahoning County Children Services. She said the organization can not help unless someone reports it.

The advocacy center and children services created and run

the event. They have planted the pinwheels in the yard every year for 13 years. They first invited the junior ROTC students seven years ago, and they have helped every year since then.

“It’s a good service learning project,” said Sgt. Douglas Moon, the instructor of the ROTC. The group does numerous service projects like this one. He brought just more than 20 of the 74 students in the program.

They planted 2,280 pinwheels

in yard. Each of the pinwheels represents the number of individuals who advocated for children in 2017.

“It’s our way to get prevention awareness out there,” said Andrea Mistovich, coordinator with the Child Advocacy Center.

This is the first event that the advocacy center and children services do each year. They also have a community event at Holiday Inn in Boardman each year.

This year the event occurred on April 13.

Students perform spring concert The fifth-, sixth- and seventhgrade bands at the Boardman Middle Schools will present a spring band concert on May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. Admission/donations accepted at the door: adults - $3, students - $2 and senior citizens are admitted free of charge.

Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29 The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield.

The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment.

Audubon Society presents mini documentary Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “America’s Other Audubon” at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Canfield library. Inspired by seeing some of John James Audubon’s engravings for “Birds of America at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia,” 29-year-old amateur naturalist Genevieve Estelle Jones embarked on her own project, “Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio.” When she died suddenly of typhoid fever, her family decided to finish her work; a labor of love that took seven years. Joy M. Kiser, an Ohioan and former librarian for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., will present a mini documentary on Kiser, which will include details about the family, archival photographs and other information not included in her book, America’s Other Audubon.

Fiesta De Las Americas to be April 26 The Ursuline High School Spanish Club is hosting its annual Fiesta De Las Americas event on April 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. The event will feature performances by the Slippery Rock University Ballet, the Labra Brothers Band and more. The cost to attend is $2 for students and $5 for adults.

Students craft event for remembrance and safety On Ma rch 14, Boa rdma n High School students pa rticipated in an event that was unique to Boardman.

The high school Student Dialogue Committee, along with administrators, teachers and staff created an annual event, borne out of tragedy, that will be motivational as well as call students to action.

The event included a student produced video, an emergency lock down drill where 17 chimes were sounded in honor of the 17 killed in Florida, then a Spartan Clap Out for first responders to thank them. More than 40 Boardman police, fire

and paramedics were honored in the clap out, with the students saying “thank you” as they walked by.

Voter reg ist rat ion tables were also busy during lunch.

Board of Elections Secretary Raymond Butler said he was stunned by the number of children who approached him with questions. More than 90 registered to vote.

“This was one of the most meaningful, inspiring events I think we’ve ever had at Boardman High School,” said Principal Cindy Fernback. “Accolades should be directed to the Student Dialogue Committee, who

not only crafted the event, but more importantly showed true leadership in creating student buy-in for a unified effort that respects the school district’s safety policies.”

“I think without the responders being so involved, and showing up in the large number that they did, we could not have possibly had such a great impact on the students as I know we had today. Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence had their third annual reverse raffle dinner on March 9 at Holiday Inn in Boardman for community members looking to help the schools.

The money raised during the event goes toward the minigrants that the organization gives to the teachers. Within the last eight years, the Fund has collected more than $50,000 for the Boardman schools.

“We want to showcase what the Fund does for the schools and the community at large,“ said Joyce Mistovich, President of Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence. She said the real winners are the students, as the fund works to expand opportunities for the schools.

The night featured a dinner, basket raffle, a silent auction, a raffle for a number of gift cards, a 50/50 raffle and a reverse raffle. The basket raffle had 100 prizes that the attendees could win.

The reverse raffle’s top prize winner, the last ticket drawn from the raff le, won $2,000.

The biggest loser, the first ticket drawn, won $50. The board members of the fund set up a number of prize winners in between the start and end of the raffle.

Last year’s reverse raffle dinner funded the mini-grants for the 2017 school year. They allocated $8,465 to eight projects, including an augmented reality sandbox for the science classes, exercise equipment for a health club started by the physical education teachers at the junior high school and a virtual reality set.

Stadium Drive Elementary invited families to the school for their father and child gym night events on Feb. 21 and 28.

The gym night featured three different games for the children and their fathers to play. The school’s PTA also provided a snack for the end of the night after all parents and children participated in the games.

Kendal Daltorio, the schools physical education teacher, organized the night with the PTA. She said the night gives students a night out with their dads as well as gives them a fun night with health and exercise.

“It’s a great way to get kids to interact with their dads or another male figure,“ she said.

The students and their dads played gaga ball and hot shots, and they participated in a scavenger hunt. Each pair of children and parents competed against the others in all three games.

The group played gaga ball on the stage. Gaga ball is a game similar to dodgeball where players swipe a ball at their opponents’ lower body to get them out. The game took a free-for-all approach, where parents and children tried to get each other out.

Those playing the game stood in the playing area, called the gaga pit. The pit has walls surrounding it so the ball can bounce off the sides.

When someone got hit with the ball, they left the playing area and stood in line to get back in. Once a person left the playing area, another person from the line took their place.

The hot shots game rewarded players for their basketball skills. Scott Knox, a physical education teacher who has taught at the school during Daltorio’s maternity leave, put place mats on the ground throughout the gym for players to shoot basketballs from.

Each place mat represented a different point total. Players who made a basket while standing on a mat got to place the mat in their scoring circle, a hula hoop and earn that amount of points. At the

end of the game, the parents and children totaled their points to determine the winner of the game.

The school set up the scavenger hunt to be a healthy learning exercise. Parents and children worked together to race through the school and answer questions and do exercises. For example, students answered questions about the cardiovascular system in a hallway. In another part of the school, they had to do yoga poses. The team that finished the fastest won.

Daltorio said that the night is nice because it gives students time to spend time with each other after school. She has organized the night every year since she began in 2010. She added the gaga ball game and has made the night her own.

The school only offers the night to the secondgrade and fourth-grade students. The second grade had the gym night on the 21st and the fourth grade had their night a week later.

Reserve Officers Association donate to Youngstown VA The Reser ve Officers Association League (ROAL) and the Mahoning Chapter OH- 42 of the Reserve Officers Association (ROA) donated $1,000 to the Youngstown VA Clinic to help purchase a new “Veterans Helping Veterans” van for the Youngstown VA Clinic and received a framed Certificate of Appreciation. The new van is used to transport veterans to the Cleveland VA Hospital from Mahoning County. The funds were raised at a Christmas Charity Auction Banquet at the Manor Restaurant in Austintown. The ROAL has raised more than $5,000 to aid various veteran organizations such as the USO Lounge at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, Fisher House, Wounded Warrior Project, the YARS Base Community Council, and the Youngstown VA Clinic.

Since Paws Town first opened it has been Boardman Park’s goal to provide a fun, social and safe environment where dogs, both big and small, are able to play off leash.

Being a members-only dog park enables the park to accomplish this. Members of Paws Town find comfort in knowing that all dogs in the dog park are vaccinated and registered with the county. Also, the double gate entry system allows members to unleash dogs after entering but before interacting with other dogs. The 3.25 acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags.

Boardman boys track opens season with victory The Boardman boys track team opened its 2018 regular season with a 106-24-17 victory over the Ursuline Fighting Irish and Canfield Cardinals on April 3 at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by senior David Bader, junior Payton Torres, sophomore Alan Cuevas and freshman Cristian Ortiz in the 4x800 meter relay. The next event, the 110-meter hurdles, the Spartans took two of the four places with sophomore Brian Yauger second and sophomore Jaret Foulke in fourth. In the 100-meter dash, junior Josh Rodriguez was first, sophomore Isaiah Suarez took second and senior JaJuan Forte was third.

The next event on the track was the first ever seated 100 in Spartan track history with freshman Micah Beckwith placing first.

niors Justice Jama, Billy Cammack, and JaJuan Forte along with freshman Brennon Stratton placed first. In the 1600-meter run, sophomore Mitchel Dunham placed first, freshman Frank Bero was second, freshman Caydin Newberry was third and freshman Justin Maloney was fourth. The 4x100 relay team of Jama, Rodriguez, Forte and sophomore Rashie Garner placed first. Senior Jason Fabian placed second in the 400-meter run, he was followed by Torres in third and Stratton fourth. In the 300-meter hurdles Yauger was first and sophomore Manfred Kastiga was third. In the 800-meter run, Torres was second and Bader was third. The 200-meter dash was won by Jama with Suarez in second.

In the field events, the Spartans swept the high jump with Jama first, Yauger second, Cam-

mack placed third and freshman Aiden Glatz was fourth. In the discus, senior Steven Amstutz took second with junior Nikitas Missos in fourth, while in the shot put Amstutz took first, sophomore Dave Merdich was second and Missos was fourth.

Finally, in the pole vault, senior Mark Moradian was first, senior Jacob Kimble second, freshman Teddy Anzevino was third and freshman Sam Cammack was fourth.

Due to weather, the long jump, 3200, and 4x4 relay were not contested.

“Our kids were chomping at the bit to get out there and compete,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “We were unable to run last week due to weather and even though tonight wasn’t paradise, we were able to get most of the events in before the storms hit.”

The Boardman boys track team improved its 2018 record to 4-0 and 2-0 in the AAC with a 65-58-41 victory over the Poland Bulldogs and Warren Harding Raiders on April 10.

The Spartans opened the meet with a second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of seniors Jason Fabian and David Bader and freshmen Frank Bero and Caydin Newberry.

In the field events, senior Steven Amstutz won the shot put and junior Nikitas Missos was fourth. Missos placed second in the discus with Amstutz taking third. In the high jump Cammack was fourth and Nick Torres placed fourth in the long jump.

“This was a very tough meet for us,” sa id Spa rta n Head Coach John Phillips. “Poland is a very good team and Warren has some outstanding athletes-we really had to fight for every point tonight.”

Ukulele group to meet There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

The Boardman library celebrated the artwork of local students in grades 7-12 from St. Charles School, Glenwood Junior High School and Boardman High School. They opened the gallery on March 20 and kept it open for a week.

The library has done this program for 17 years. They also celebrated kindergarten through sixth-grade artwork from March 6-13.

ABWA crowns woman of the year

The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. For ad-

Pruning clinic offered at the Boardman Park There will be a hands-on pruning clinic at the historic Smith Family Homestead, located at 8270 Raupp Ave. in Boardman, which is off of Washington Boulevard, on April 25 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Ohio State Extension Service, Boardman Park and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, disease reduction, regeneration and shape. Additionally, proper pruning techniques and tools will be discussed. There will be hands-on training and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair if needed.

Pre-registration is required. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners and a set of handouts. Registration forms are available at Boardman Park or at the Ohio State Extension office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield, or request a form via email at angela@boardmanpark.com.
