Newcomers club to meet on April 25 Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will meet on April 25 at Das Dutch House Restaurant, located at 1485 South Ave in Columbiana. Poland Forest wildflower walk The Friends of Poland Forest invite the public to their Spring Wildflower Walk on April 29 beginning 10 a.m. at the College Street entrance to the forest. The leisurely hike will explore this beautiful nature preserve for approximately two hours. For more information, call 330-757-9057.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. The cost for the 5K is

$30 before May 5 and $35 after that date. The Fun Run is $10. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and the Fun Run begins at 10:30 a.m. Runners that sign up for the 5K before May 21 will receive a free race T-shirt. Anyone interested in participating can register at https://runsignup. com/Race/OH/Poland/Strawberry5k. Molnar Farms is also collecting non-perishable food items on race day.

Basket auction fundraiser to be April 29 The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual basket auction on April 29 at the Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the drawing will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Donations at the door will be $5, which will include a chance at the door prizes, 25 chances at the table gifts and a refreshment.

Other refreshments are available. The auction benefits the education fund for the chapter. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Audubon Society presents mini documentary Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “America’s Other Audubon” at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the Canfield library. Inspired by seeing some of John James Audubon’s engravings for “Birds of America at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia,” 29-year-old amateur naturalist Genevieve Estelle Jones embarked on her own project, “Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio.” When she died suddenly of typhoid fever, her family decided to finish her work; a labor of love that took seven years. Joy M. Kiser, an Ohioan and former librarian for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., will present a mini documentary on Kiser, which will include details about the family, archival photographs and other information not included in her book, America’s Other Audubon.

Fiesta De Las Americas to be April 26 The Ursuline High School Spanish Club is hosting its annual Fiesta De Las Americas event on April 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. The event will feature performances by the Slippery Rock University Ballet, the Labra Brothers Band and more. The cost to attend is $2 for students and $5 for adults.

Books, Bags and Bling sale to be April 21 Poland United Methodist Church will host the annual Books, Bags and Bling sale on April 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. The church is located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland.

Ukulele group to meet There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings. The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

PSHS showcases exceptional art from area schools

P ol a nd S e m i n a r y H i g h School hosted their “Exceptional Art Show” in the lobby of the field house on April 10.

The event showcased the artistic talents of children with special needs from eight school districts throughout the area.

They received 84 pieces from students in grades from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

“People think of these students as having disabilities, so we wanted to shine a light on the abilities they do have,” said special education teacher Lindsay Ignazio.

The event was a joint effort from Ignazio, special education teacher Stephanie Vagas, special education aide Holly Toy and art teacher Sue Holub. The art club volunteered at the event and helped it run smoothly.

Each of the participating students received certificate for their art and each piece of art got a ribbon. Additionally, they gave away special awards, such as “most colorful,” “best craftsma nship” a nd “best la ndscape.”

They plan on having this gallery event every year. They

hope to grow and include more schools in the future. They already have the date picked out for their Second Annual Exceptional Art Show, which will be April 9, 2019.

Local shrine club to host dinner event

Students from Poland Seminary High School competed in and won awards at The Mahoning County Art Show. Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Local MSVC chapter hosts convention The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA) recently hosted, for the first time ever in the Mahoning Valley, the Ohio Council of Chapters Biennial Convention at the Consolidated Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna. Approximately 120 attendees representing seven chapters from all over the state of Ohio met for two days to hear presentations from a number of guest speakers. These included Capt. Nicholas Bartolotta of the 9th U.S. Coast Guard, RADM Margaret Kitt, Assistant General Surgeon representing the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Col. William Meade, Commander of

Camp Ravenna, Ohio National Guard, Robert Edwards, director of Defense Finance and Accounting Center in Cleveland, Col. Terry Coles, MOAA Senior Director of Chapter Affairs, and Lt. Col. John Boccieri, representing the 910th Air Lift Wing at the YARS. Main speaker at the banquet was Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins, President and CEO of MOAA, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia and former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot. General Atkins presented the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter with the prestigious Five-Star Level of Excellence Award, the highest rated performance award achieved by fewer than 20% of more than 450 Chapters across the United States.

The February and March meetings of 4-H’ers Unlimited were packed full of fun and business. Officers elected include President Justine Knauf, Vice President Allie Beniston, Secretary Kaleigh Williams, Treasurer Alexis Pomponio, Recreation Leader Lindsey Knauf, Health Officer Jenna Vrabel and Safety Officer Katherine Pomponio. Pomponio, discussed the importance of smoke alarms and changing batteries regularly. Members are currently collecting Nutrena feed tags as part of a fundraising effort. At the conclusion of the meeting, members stuffed plastic eggs with candy.

These eggs were used at the Community Egg Hunt which took place at Western Reserve Schools on March 30. This event was 4-H sponsored.

4-H’ers Unlimited will host their next meeting on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellsworth Fire Hall.

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County had an appreciation breakfast for their volunteers on March 17 during their March for Meals campaign.

The March for Meals campaign is a national program started by Meals on Wheels of America to raise awareness to isolated seniors in the communities around America. The Mahoning County chapter had their appreciation breakfast to coincide with the campaign to thank their drivers.

While some Meals on Wheels organizations receive funding from the government, the Mahoning County chapter does not. They stay maintained through the price of a meal, private donations and grants from local foundations.

Kathy Esseniyi, president of Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, explained that the breakfast gives the organization an opportunity to thank the drivers and to get all the volunteers together. She said that the organization would not make it without them.

During the breakfast, Esseniyi took time to recognize Bill Brown and Lori Brennan, an important board member and a long-time driver with the organization. Esseniyi handed them an award during the breakfast and spoke about their service to the program.

Brown said that he wanted to help fill a need in the community. He say that a lot of older people had become housebound and sometimes did not have a family on which to rely. He wanted to make sure there was a resource in the community for

those people so that they always had someone.

Brennan spoke about how much she enjoyed volunteering with Meal on Wheels. She said it was a very good use of her time and she liked seeing the appreciative people. She liked volunteering with the organization so much that she got her daughter to volunteer with her.

The March for Meals campaign began in 2002. Meals on Wheels of America chose the month because it is the month in which President Richard Nixon amended the Older Americans Act in 1972, which created nutrition programs for senior citizens.

Meals on Wheels of America has more than 5,000 community programs, and each program is run independently. The organization aims to help the elderly with nutrition and remaining able to live at home.

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County also planned a bubble launch, an annual event at YSU, but a winter storm forced the organization to cancel the event. The launch was aimed to raise awareness of the organization in order to spark interest in younger citizens.

Poland NHS inducts new members Seventy-eight juniors and seniors from Poland Seminary High School were admitted into the National Honor Society at the NHS Induction Ceremony.

A candlelight ceremony took place on Feb. 21.

The inductees were all admitted based on the qualities of character, scholarship, service and leadership. The new members displayed all the characteristics through many hours of community service. The students also were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 to be considered. These new inductees now will continue with their community service in order to make Poland a better and more beautiful place.

Gwyneth Basista is the advisor of the NHS, an organization that continues to make a positive impact in the community and school. NHS is led by five officers: President Noah Landry, Vice President Monica Kurjan, Secretaries Mark Pompeo and Marisa Ricciardi and Treasurer Marik Rogenski.

Rotary chili open raises money for charities

The Poland Rotary had their annual Chili Open at Bedford Trails Golf Course and Restaurant on March 3 to raise money for 16 local charities.

The Rotary had the restaurant

open and made food and drinks throughout the day. They participated in a mock golf course, a hitting contest and a cornhole tournament.

Dan Dull, the co-chair for the Chili Open, said that the Rotary has the event for two reasons, “the fellowship aspect ... and to

give back to the charities.“ He said the weather was great to have the event as they have had to do the Chili Open in the snow in previous years.

The Rotary had a few events that lasted throughout the morning and into the afternoon. Their mock golf course had 18 holes,

but the course was smaller and easier than a normal course. The driving competition asked members to hit a golf ball nearest to an object. They had a basket raffle with different prizes donated by local businesses.

They also had an eating competition between Lowellville and Poland high school students.

Each team had five members and each member had to eat three cups of chili, four saltine crackers and drink a can of soda.

Poland’s team ate faster and won the competition, finishing in two minutes and nine seconds.

After the eating competition, the Rotary members competed in a cornhole tournament. They played two games at a time just outside of the restaurant.

The money raised from this event will be awarded to 16 charities in May, along with the funds from the Rotary’s “Night at the Races“ event on Jan. 26.

Dull and Mary Ann Carano chaired both events, which the Rotary considers as one large fundraiser. They have had the Chili Open for 33 years and the Night at the Races for three.

More than 190 students gathered in the Joyce Brooks Center at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center to celebrate the Business Professionals of America (BPA) Region 11 winners. Information Technology students from Ashtabula, Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning County Career and Technical Centers all came together for the awards ceremony and banquet. Awards were given in Financial Services, Business Administration Services, Management Information Systems, Digital Communication and Design and Management, Marketing and Communication. Information Technology Instructor and BPA Advisor Helen Slack and 14 of her students from the MCCTC have qualified for the State competition and attended the BPA State Leadership Conference in Columbus on March 8 and 9.

The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road.

Vendors are being sought for this oneday sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. No hot food or soft drink venders or raffle drawings. There is a limit of 100 spaces and you must bring your own table (tables up to 8 feet in length work best in front of your trunk). The cost per space is $15 until May 1. Spaces increase to $20 after May 1. Vendors may arrive after 7:30 a.m. and must be in their assigned spot by 8:30 a.m. No refunds are given for any reason and the event will take place rain or shine.
