Members of Mahoning County Meals on Wheels partnered with Youngstown State University student-athletes to prepare for the balloon launch for the March for Meals on March 20.

Balloon launch kicks-off March for Meals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County teamed with several Youngstown State University student-athletes to participate in the second annual balloon launch on March 20 at the WATTS Center. More than 20 student-athletes volunteered their time to celebrate the March for Meals program with the volunteers from Meals on Wheels. This is the second year that YSU studentathletes have collaborated with Meals on Wheels and the number of students who showed up this year compared to last year has doubled. Linda Jen k ins, Mea ls on Wheels Director, said how it was

amazing seeing how supportive everyone at the launch was of the program. This is the 15th annual March for Meals which is a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels. “If it’s one or 100 it’s just awesome to think someone was so kind to give up their time,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County gets credit for the amount of people who attend their events and show off the Meals on Wheels March for Meals logo and get funding for the participation. This year, the balloons Meals on Wheels provided were biodegradable so when they were released into the air, they wouldn’t harm the environment when

they came back to the ground. The volunteers and studentathletes held the balloons and March for Meals signs for a picture inside the WATTS Center, then went outside to release the balloons. “I didn’t expect this many students, but the more the merrier. And it’s for a worthy cause,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County is self-sufficient and runs off grants and donations, not federal funding. The volunteers will continue to deliver meals to the customers and prices will remain the same. For more information on how to contribute to March for Meals, visit www.MarchForMeals.com.

Bonding with babies and books This program is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6- to 23-months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in May at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Easter fun for everyone hosted at local Dairy Queen By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Families spent a sweet Saturday together with the Easter Bunny at the Cornersburg Dairy Queen on April 8. Owners Raymond and Christine Smith host annual holiday events at their Dairy Queen locations for families to come and enjoy. The Easter event has been an annual tradition for around 10 years. “It depends on the weather and today’s a beautiful day. It was really crazy at 11 when it began,” said Christine Smith about the amount of people who attend. The Easter Bunny was there for children to take a picture with. Those who decided to take a picture were able to pick up the developed picture later in the week from Dairy Queen. Every child who came that

was under the age of 9 received candy-filled eggs. There were three stations the children could visit to get an egg and other treats. Children could decorate an egg the “DQ Way,” which were DQ cupcakes the children could decorate using gels, sprinkles and icing. T he stat ion most of t he guests flocked to was the grass area where there were live bunnies. Most of the bunnies were in the cage except for the ones the employees had out for people to pet. There were several bunnies to children could look at and pet. The Easter event gives families an opportunity to spend time together in a fun environment. The Sm it hs a lso own the Austintown and Canfield Dairy Queen which also hosted an Easter event in the evening of April 8 and again on April 9.

Students showed off their talents during the first ever Austintown Middle School talent show on April 4. The Austintown PTA put together the talent show for the students in grades 6-8 to have the opportunity for the student body to have fun and express themselves in various ways. Tryouts took place on March 6 and more than 60 students tried out. That number was cut down to 31 students and 27 acts for the final show. The students practiced twice a week at school and then even more during their own time outside of school. The students had a pizza party, sponsored by Home Savings, during their dress rehearsal as a way to celebrate the talent show. “We did a student show this morning for the sixth-grade,” said PTA President Lynn Mickey. There was a variety of performances from dancers to singers, piano players to trumpet players and students who performed karate moves and one student who showed off his yoyo skills.

Tickets were sold in advance for guests who wanted to reserve a seat and for those who didn’t purchase an advance ticket were able to buy one at the door. “I’m very excited. I’ve been performing with Easy Street Productions and doing other little plays. It’s really fun,” said sixth-grader Alaina Protopapa who sang while using sign language to “Demons,” by Imagine Dragons. Protopapa has just recently starting learning sign language, so she has been practicing a lot to make sure she got it right. Many of the students were nervous, but excited at the same time. They have been practicing everywhere they went to perfect their performances. “I’ve never done anything like this before in my entire life,” said sixth-grader Jadin Adamczak who sang “Lost Boy,” by Ruth B. “It’s been quite the experience.” At the end of the show all of the students took the stage to sing and dance to “Feel this Moment.” The PTA awarded all of the children with a plaque as a way to thank them and congratulate them on their performances.
