State Geography Bee Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.

On April 1, Boardman Glenwood Middle School eighth-grader Jakob Peters competed against 99 of the top geography students in the state of Ohio. Peters was among a competative group at the 2016 Ohio State Geography Bee at Grandview Heights High School in Columbus. In eight preliminary rounds of competition, Peters answered questions dealing with categories such as “State Savvy,” “Our National Monuments,” “Weird But True,” “Odd Item Out,” “Protecting Wildlife,” “Forces of Nature,” “Watery Planet” and “World of Music.” Confronted with both choice and non-choice questions, Peters successfully navigated his way through the bee with correct answers in six of the eight rounds falling one correct answer short of participating in the tiebreaker round.

Ohio Supreme Court Justice speaks to students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith French visited Boardman High School on March 23. Students in government and history classes from Austintown, Boardman, Beaver Local, Campbell, East Palestine, Jackson-Milton, Struthers, Sebring, Western Reserve and Windham attended French’s presentation at the Boardman Performing

Arts Center. French, a native of Sebring, frequently visits schools all around Ohio to speak to students about the judicial system, personal experiences and her life. Before French spoke to all of the schools, she stopped at the Boardman High School government class for a more personal visit. The first part of French’s presentation was a discussion of her job and the experiences she had

going through school and making her way to the position she has now. After French spoke, she offered a question and answer session for the students. The students asked questions about her job, advice on how they should go about pursuing what they want to do in life and several other topics. The students listened thoroughly to what French had to say. When it came time for them to ask questions, they weren’t

afraid to ask anything because she was open and welcoming during her speech. “I would encourage you, as you think about what you might like to do with your life, to not be afraid of doing what you think is right,” French told the students. French’s short, but informative, presentation was to help encourage students to go after what they want to do. She helped show them any obstacles they may run into can be overcome.

One of the guests at the vase class started shaping her clay in the design she wanted her vase.

Fellows Riverside Gardens molds friendships and vases By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted a stoneware windowsill vase class on March 15, taught by Lynn Cardwell. Students who attended the class had the opportunity to create their own vases with the help of Cardwell. The vases were made out of clay and texture was added by using different fabrics, leaves and other objects. The students would start with clay that they had to soften and mold into the shape they wanted. Before the clay set, the different materials available for texture, would be put in the softened clay. The textures are what made the vases original and personalized to each person. “Once the clay is dried they’re

fired once to a bisque, and then I’ll glaze them. Then I would fire them a second time and it turns the glaze into like a glass coating,” said Cardwell. There were finished vases and partially finished vases for the students to look at. They could then try and mold their vases to look like the examples or mold it into their own shape. The vases were to be narrow enough to set on a windowsill, but large enough to put a plant or other object inside. Waiting for the clay to dry and then going through the entire firing and glazing process takes about four to five weeks to get the completed vase. After Cardwell finishes the vases, the students can come back to Fellows Riverside Gardens to pick it up and bring back to their homes.

Selena Phillips, a Boardman librarian, helped the guests with whatever questions they had about the project. Phillips also had a table set out for snacks and drinks for the people who attended. “I’ve given them some templates, but if they have some other ideas that’s fine. We’re just making canvas art,” said Phillips. Some people ca me w it h their friends, their family or by themselves. Every person got their own canvas and could pick out a template to use. The different types of scrapbook paper allowed each person make their canvas art original. There were people who made flowers, cut out letters to form their names and several other designs were put on the canvas. Given the good turnout of the event, the library is looking to host another canvas art event in the future.
