The fourth-grade students at Dobbins learned different routines to different songs they performed during their “Lights, Camera, Action!” play.

Dobbins students are performers for a night By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Friends and families filled t he Poland Seminar y High School aud itor iu m a s t he fourth-grade students at Poland Dobbins put on their first musical performance in several years on March 15. The theme for the performance was “Lights, Camera, Action!” and it consisted of songs from popular movies

and shows. The performance was directed by Dean Wilson and Dana Veneskey, both music instructors for the Poland school system. Wilson and Veneskey put forth a lot of hard work preparing the students for their performance. The costumes the students wore were costumes they had at home from Halloween or any other occasion. During part of the performance, a group of students were selected to say a

line that represents the character they are dressed as. Students started practicing playing the recorder in November, but didn’t start working on per for ma nce songs until Ja nua r y, a f ter w inter break. Some students had solos, some had dialogue they said between songs and some played different instruments, like a xylophone. A group of students played an inflatable air guitar during one of the

songs. “This isn’t just about entertaining parents, it’s about developing skills. I call my students ‘emerging music readers’ because in part they read the music for the show,” said Wilson. The song “Lights, Camera, Action” was the final song of the performance. The audience gave a standing ovation for the students as they finished.

Bonding with babies and books This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Join the Poland library on Wednesdays in May at 10 a.m.

Leprechauns leap their way to North Preschool for St. Patrick’s By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Students at Poland North Preschool participated in different St. Patrick’s Day activities on March 17. T he st udent s ate Luck y Charms and other St. Patrick’s Day snacks, wore green and searched for the leprechaun in their classrooms. Teachers Joy Bucci, Samantha Cox and Ashley Baron incorporated St. Patrick’s Day into their classrooms and lessons for the special day. A s t he st udents entered their classrooms, there were little leprechaun foot prints on the floor for the students to follow. The leprechaun was hiding somewhere in the classroom and it was up to the students to find him. Students came to school dressed in green, wearing top hats and other accessories to get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit. They also made different crafts and read St. Patrick’s Day books. Students in Baron’s class made their own St. Patrick’s Day boxes to bring into school as well.

Poland librarian Missy Williams mixed together ingredients for the bread dough she taught people how to make during a class on March 24.

No knead bread class is rising success By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland library taught a class on No Knead Bread Making on March 24. Missy Williams, a librarian at the Poland library, taught those who signed up how to ma ke doug h t hat requ i res only a few ingredients and no k neading. The g uests were supplied with the ingredients and a spoon and bowl if they didn’t bring their own. “I make this bread all the time, I’ve been making bread

for probably 20 years now,” said Williams. Williams started the class off by explaining what the ingredients were and how everything was going to come together before she demonstrated the steps hands-on. People watched Williams as she mixed everything together before they started. This way Williams was able to walk around and help anyone with any questions they may have had while making the dough. The class started by mixing

their dry ingredients together and then Williams came around to pour the water into the bowl. After all of the ingredients were mi xed together, plastic wrap was placed over the bowl and the guests were free to take home their dough and wait for it to rise so they could baked it. Each bowl of dough would make between two and four loafs, depending how big people made them. There will be another baking class in May, dealing with how to decorate cupcakes.

Children’s author/illustrator Dar Hosta visited Dobbins Elementary in Poland on April 11 and 12 for a workshop with students. It began with a school-wide assembly, where Hosta introduced the children to her creative approach to writing and illustrating children’s books. Hosta is the creator of dozens of award winning children’s books including “I Love the Night,” “If I Were a Tree” and most recently “Doggie Do!” Her school visits empower children to be creative thinkers. The New Jersey based author also is a certified educator, traveling to present school and adult workshops across the country. Special education interventionist shares experience ∫By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Carmen Difrangia is a native of Poland and is currently a K-2 intervention specialist at Ohio Virtual Academy. Prior to working at OHVA, Difrangia worked in the public school system for more than six years. While working in public schools, Difrangia worked with children who are emotionally disabled and have behavioral issues. She worked with students of all ages, but now with OHVA, she works mainly with students who are in kindergarten. Difrangia made the switch from the public school system to OHVA when she became pregnant with her daughter. It was something that provided her with a more flexible schedule. Difrangia had taken online classes herself and enjoyed the convenience of them. She has been with OHVA for two years and is looking to continue her time there. “I’m constantly learning new things about technology, it’s

very efficient,” said Difrangia. Although Difrangia enjoys the face-to-face interaction, she also appreciates the different aspects of working with students via the Internet. She teaches the same skills, but in a different format. In public schools Difrangia was used to teaching around 10 students at a time and at OHVA it ranges from one to five students at a time. “The kids and parents have to find what the best fit for the student is,” said Difrangia. Difrangia puts an emphasis on what is best for the students. It’s up the to students and the parents to find out what surrounding the student performs better in. Some students perform better in a public environment, while others take to Internet classes better. Working in the public school system versus teaching online classes is different in several ways. Difrangia is hoping to continue her career with OHVA, but would not be opposed to going back to the public school system.
