Redeemer Lutheran Church hosts rummage sale The Ladies Guild of Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2305 S. Canfield - Niles Road in Austintown, will host its semi-annual rummage sale on May 4 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on May 5 from 10 a.m. until noon. All items will be available for a “free-will” offering. Clothes, books, toys and household goods are just some of the items offered.

All proceeds from this sale will benefit the Rescue Mission of Youngstown for their building project. Lunch will be available on Friday at regular prices.

Immaculate Mile race to be May 31 The Immaculate Mile at the Festival Race will take place on May 31 ar 7 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefitting the church. There will be top overall finisher and age group awards. There will be a free children’s dash event for children who are ages 10-years-old and younger. The children’s dash begins at 7 p.m. with the mile race beginning at its conclusion. A free hot dog and soft drink ticket will be given to all runners. Any questions can be directed to Matt at 330-398-5512.

Night Out raises funds with sale Austintown’s National Night Out Celebration will be hosting its second annual Trash and Treasure Sale fundraiser on May 27 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Austintown Township Park.

The event is taking place rain or shine, and is open to all. Spaces are still available and run $10 per (parking) space.

Pre-kindergarten story time This program, which will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays during May at the Austintown library, is for 4and 5-year-olds to help develop preliteracy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Bonding with babies and books This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-3 months.

There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.

Tales & Talk for 2s and 3s Join the Austintown library on Wednesdays during May at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

The 5k and mile run/walk at Austintown Township Park was a part of the Fitness Funday event to raise funds for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

The event had a few local vendors, a walk and a dancing workout inside the Stacey Pavilion.

Walk and funday to fund IBD research

Austintown Township Park hosted the Fitness Sunday Funday 5K Run/Walk on April 14 to benefit the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

Jessica Giancola organized the event. She is involved with the Take Steps fundraising event in Cleveland and has become a spokesperson for the program in the Youngstown area. The event had a 5k and mile track set up in the park and vendors, dancing and information on Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis inside the Stacey Pavilion building.

Giancola was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease three years ago.

An avid runner, she got involved with the Take Steps program in Cleveland and wanted to create a local event to raise awareness about the disease and ways to help the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation find a cure.

“It makes sure people know how common these diseases are,” said Giancole about the Take Steps and Fitness Sunday Funday programs.

Representatives from the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation at the event gave information about the diseases to those at the event.

Both Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). More than 1.7 million people have IBD in the United States and three million worldwide.

The funding for the event will go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, which will use the money to fund research to find a cure for the disease, fund camps, help patients and support caregivers.

Giancola is a part of the Take Steps team Princess Poopy Pants. She will be named an honorary hero at Take Steps Cleveland on June 24.

Two animal rescue organizations teamed up for a “Some Bunny to Love“ fundraiser featuring a bake sale and rabbits at Family Video in Austintown on March 25.

Legacy Dog Rescue has had an Easter bake sale in the past, but they invited Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies and Feathered Friends

Rescue and Sanctuary (F5RS) to this year’s event. F5RS brought their rabbits with them so families could take Easter pictures with the bunnies.

The organizations split the funds they raised evenly. Legacy Dog Rescue had many sweets and cookies for attendees to buy at their bake sale. F5RS gave

families the opportunity to pet their rabbits and take pictures with the animals in front of a backdrop for eight dollars.

The organization trained the rabbits to be nationally certified therapy animals. All of their bunnies have been rescued pets. The group, stationed in North Lima, does events all over the area. In March alone, they made 29 different visits to places like the Austintown library, Easterseals and local schools.

F5RS provided families with information about their organization. They do not take in wild animals and are currently not looking for more rabbits. Volunteers run the group and look to give back to the community.

Legacy Dog Rescue aim to help find homes with responsible owners for dogs. They also have a program to spay and neuter the animals. They work with pets from the Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County had an appreciation breakfast for their volunteers on March 17 during their March for Meals campaign.

The March for Meals campaign is a national program started by Meals on Wheels of America to raise awareness to isolated seniors in the communities around America. The Mahoning County chapter had their appreciation breakfast to coincide with the campaign to thank their drivers.

While some Meals on Wheels organizations receive funding from the government, the Mahoning County chapter does not. They stay maintained through the price of a meal, private donations and grants from local foundations.

Kathy Esseniyi, president of Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, explained that the breakfast gives the organization an opportunity to thank the drivers and to get all the volunteers together. She said that the organization would not make it without them.

During the breakfast, Esseniyi took time to recognize Bill Brown and Lori Brennan, an important board member and a long-time driver with the organization. Esseniyi handed them an award during the breakfast and spoke about their

Brown said that he wanted to help fill a need in the community. He say that a lot of older people had become housebound and sometimes did not have a family on which to rely.

He wanted to make sure there was a resource in the community for those people so that they always had someone.

Brennan spoke about how much she enjoyed volunteering with Meal on Wheels. She said it was a very good use of her time and she liked seeing the appreciative people. She liked volunteering with the organization so much that she got her daughter to volunteer with her.

The March for Meals campaign began in 2002. Meals on Wheels of America chose the month because it is the month in which President Richard Nix-

on amended the Older Americans Act in 1972, which created nutrition programs for senior citizens.

Meals on Wheels of America has more than 5,000 community programs, and each program is run independently. The organization aims to help the elderly with nutrition and remaining able to live at home.

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County also planned a bubble launch, an annual event at YSU, but a winter storm forced the organization to cancel the event.

The launch was aimed to raise awareness of the organization in order to spark interest in younger citizens.

The Austintown library invited children to have fun with Peep treats for their Marshmallow Peep Science program on March 14.

Librarians Ashley Young and Nikki Puhalla organized the event to happen near the Easter holiday, since the sweet is a widely-sold candy during the holiday season. They created seven stations for the children to visit.

POLICE BLOTTER April 10 Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a vacant structure in the 40 block of North Edgehill Avenue, then stole copper piping, a sink and a furnace coil.

April 11 Arrest: Jean L. Clover, 58, of Tod Avenue Southwest, Warren, surrendered on a warrant accusing her of failing to appear in Austintown Area Court on a probation-violation charge.

Fraud: A Barrington Drive resident found out personal information had been used to open an account and apply for a loan without authorization.

Domestic violence: Police charged Gomer E. Yates of Westminster Avenue, Austintown, with making domestic-violence threats after a family member alleged an intoxicated Yates, 61, walked home to their residence after an argument between them at a Mahoning Avenue business, then threatened to beat up the accuser and punched a window in an effort to enter after she had locked him out of the home.

Arrest: A vehicle check in the 5400 block of Mahoning Avenue resulted in the arrest of Kelly M. Paige, 36, who was wanted on a felony warrant from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Paige, of Stocker Avenue, Youngstown, faced a charge of theft from an elderly person.

Theft: A wallet was missing from a car in the 20 block of North Yorkshire Drive.

Theft: Jasmine S. Weaver, 21, of Pasadena Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with intentionally failing to self-scan 23 food and other items valued at $126 while in Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. April 12 Arrest: After pulling him over on North Four Mile Run Road, authorities charged Dajuan M. Will, 37, of South Dunlap Avenue,

Youngstown, with obstructing official business. Will, who also was wanted on a Franklin County warrant, led police on a brief foot chase before he was apprehended a short time later, a report stated.

Identity theft: A Lanterman Road resident discovered personal information had been stolen and used in a fraudulent manner to file an income-tax return.

April 13 Arrest: After responding to a fight in the 200 block of South Raccoon Road, officers charged Sarah M. Vangundy, no address listed, with violating a protection order after a family member alleged Vangundy, 33, was at her residence in violation of the order she had filed.

Child endangering: Authorities received information about a child left unattended in a truck at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course off state Route 46, then charged Jose A. Rivera, 35, with child endangerment.

Rivera, of North Avenue, Girard, admitted having been in the racino for about an hour, during which time his 4-year-old daughter was alone in the vehicle, a report showed.

Fraud: Someone stole $300 from an account that belongs to a Yorktown Lane resident.

Theft: Medication was taken from a vehicle’s trunk in the 5400 block of Mahoning Avenue.

Domestic violence: Deena L. Williamson, 47, of Sprucewood Drive, Austintown, was charged with the crime after her mother alleged Williamson had become argumentative before slamming a refrigerator door on the accuser’s arm, leaving bruising, and pulling her hair.

Theft: A lawn decoration was stolen from a yard in the 40 block of South Raccoon Road.

Fraud: An unauthorized deposit and withdrawal had been made to an account of a Fairview Road resident.

Theft: A temporary tag was stolen off a vehicle in the 2500 block of Redgate Lane.

April 14 Burglary: To an apartment in the 1000 block of Compass West Drive. Stolen were various electronics items.

Criminal damaging: A door window was broken to a residence in the 3800 block of Huntmere Avenue.

Theft: Someone in the 4000 block of Oakwood Avenue broke into and stole property from a car.

Robbery: A person in the 1000 block of Compass West Drive told police of having been assaulted. A cellphone was stolen from the victim.

Drug paraphernalia: After pulling over a vehicle on North Meridian Road, police charged Heather R. Ramsey, 37, of Gary Avenue, Girard, with possessing drug paraphernalia after alleging three suspected crack-cocaine pipes, a spoon with burn marks common in drug use and a digital scale were found.

Summons: After responding to a report of a possibly intoxicated man walking in the road near Allendale Avenue, officers charged Monty L. Lester, 53, of Redgate Lane, Austintown, with disorderly conduct.

Theft: A vehicle in the 200 block of Westminster Avenue was found with a broken window after various items had been removed.

Recovered property: A firearm was reportedly found in a front yard in the 3800 block of New Road.

April 15 Arrest: A traffic stop near Stambaugh Avenue resulted in the arrest of Briyanna P. Littlejohn, 27, who listed Youngstown addresses on McClure and Bancroft avenues and was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging failure to comply with a court order.

stuck the ends of the toothpicks in the jellybeans to connect a series of toothpicks and jellybeans.

They made shapes, such as cubes and rectangular pyramids, and placed the Peep inside the structures.

Most of the children then went to a station where they described Peeps using their five senses.

The librarians gave the children worksheets to write down their descriptions.

The children then visited three areas. One of the stations showed three Peep bunnies after hours in different cups of orange juice, soda and vinegar. The drinks did not affect the candies too much outside of changing color. The Peep in the cup of vinegar had changed shape though.

Another station had the children make a hypothesis of whether the Peeps would sink or float. The librarians also had a

station where the children placed blue and yellow Peeps in a cup of water to watch the water change to into a green color.

Young then had the children gather around another table for an experiment where she poured baking soda and vinegar on a Peep. The children all guessed what they thought would happen. The concoction stripped away some of the candy covering of the treat, but the marshmallow remained intact.

Then, the children began to play with a catapult game. The catapult, made of craft sticks, rubber bands and plastic spoons, launched the Peeps into the air with a flick of the plastic spoon.

The children tried to get the Peeps in Easter baskets the librarians provided for the station.

Once the children tried each station, they went back to their favorite station. Some tried to see how far they could catapult the peeps and others tried to see what types of structures they could make with the toothpicks and jellybeans.

Fitch band honored heroes in D.C. The Austintown Fitch High School marching band performed in the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C. on April 14.

The school was one of 13 bands from across the nation selected to participate.

The National Cherry Blossom Parade has been listed as one of the top six festival and parades in the United States.

On March 20, in spite of unseasonable weather, the band conducted one of its four “spring training” marching practices outside of Fitch High School. Since the marching band’s break from performances during football games they have not had marching practice. The spring training was in preparation of the National Cherry Blossom Parade. The twohour procession travelled along Constitution Ave. and marked the conclusion of the four-week long Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival takes place in March and April and commemorates the 1912 gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Tokyo to the nation’s capital. The parade draws an on-site audience of more than 150,000 people and is nationally syndicated to an estimated 82 percent of U.S. television markets.

“I am incredibly proud and honored to be a part of this special group of young men and women,” said Wesley O’Connor, Fitch High School Director of Bands.

“The Austintown Fitch band, the parents and community are an incredible group of people who helped us achieve this tremendous honor. I can think of no better venue than to see the Fitch band march past the Washington Monument with red, white and blue uniforms playing ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’”

Approximately 147 people, including students, staff and chaperones will travel for this opportunity. It will cost the band more than $75,000 to make the trip. To help with the associated costs, the band

parents’ organization created fundraising opportunities throughout the year.

“From sausage and fruit sales to our Jazz and Dessert Festival, our parents and students worked hard to earn this trip,” O’Connor said.

The trip was organized by Todd Wessel of Bob Rogers Travel Company.

While in Washington D.C., on April 13, the morning prior to the parade, the band was hosted by the Air Force’s Ceremonial Brass who conducted a marching and drum clinic for the band members at Joint Base Anacostia Bolling. The Ceremonial Brass organized all musical programs at Arlington National Cemetery. The band also performed a concert at the World War II Memorial Saturday evening. They have dubbed the trip as their “Honoring our Heroes” tour.

The band obtained permission from the National Park Service to lay a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial to honor three Fitch graduates who gave their lives for our country. The band presented a custom wreath with the names of Class of ’62 members 2nd Lt. Charles Brown and Sgt. James Prommersberger and Class of ’66 graduate PFC Darryl Dombroski.

The band also concluded their trip on April 15 by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

“We are so excited to travel to our nation’s capital and represent the Austintown Community and the Austintown Local School District,” O’Connor said.

Happily Ever After Zedakers celebrate 60th anniversary HUBBARD

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Welchman Zedaker of Hubbard recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The couple’s children are Raymond Edward (Tamara) Zedaker of Hubbard; Leonard E. (Nancy) Zedaker of Hubbard; Susan G. (Samuel, deceased) Savon of Austintown; Diane C. (Daryl) Wolfe of Mineral Ridge; and Eric Welchman Zedaker of McDonald.

The couple have five grandchildren, Rachel, Yvonne Marie, Samuel, Jennifer and Bridget. Nine great-grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Zedaker and the former Lillian Grace Bloom were married Feb. 4, 1958, in Vernon.

Mrs. Zedaker was a clerk at Meloni Grocery Store and at McKelvey’s Department Store as a bookkeeper in accounts payable. She had a cleaning business for 24 years and then was an environment associate at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 21 years. She also became a certified nurses aide.
