Canfield Local Schools host Literacy Night

The Canfield Local School District hosted a Family Literacy Night for families at C.H. Campbell Elementary School on April 11.

The evening began with an informative glimpse into the instructional practices that form the curriculum with a visit to a classroom to see them in action.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School Principal Travis Lavery welcomed the students and their families.

“Good evening and thank you for coming. We have a very interesting night planned. You will get to see what literacy looks like in the Canfield School District.

You will gain an understanding of literacy and will be able to keep supporting your child at home. Carol Young, our district literacy coach for grades K through eight, came on board about five years ago to guide a transition in Canfield. Students weren’t learning in ways that would push them further. Carol started looking at ways to improve our curriculum, and we now use guided reading. This night would not be possible without Carol. I would also like

to thank our teachers. They are the most professional and dedicated teachers. They put in a lot of hard work to make tonight a success” Lavery said.

Lavery then turned the floor over to Young, who further explained the events of the evening.

“Welcome. I can’t wait to see how you feel about our first family night,” Young said.

After a short video, Young dismissed the students and their families to their classrooms to engage in literacy games and experiences in two pre-selected stations.

Stations included Make-it Take-it word games and story time for kindergartners, poem reading for first grade, I Have W ho Has for third-graders, Jeopardy for fourth-graders and Book Tasting in the library for all grades.

The library was set up like a restaurant, complete with reservations, select seating and menus with questions pertaining to the books stacked on the tables. The books were categorized by grade level and genres, such as informational, realistic fiction, fairytales, fantasy, biography, animal fantasy and folktales.

Lavery said the idea of Literacy Night came from last year’s Math Night.

“We held a Math Night last year and gave everyone exit tickets to fill out when it was over and from that feedback, the biggest request we received from

parents was for a Literacy Night.

So, Carol stared working with the teachers to plan this night three months ago. We had 140 people RSVP for this event, so we are pleased with that number for the first year,” Lavery said.

CVMS ACE students donate to Angels for Animals

Ca nf ield Village Midd le School Ambitious Citizens for Empathy Charity Committee members Emily Heino, Anna Kerns, Matthew Logan and A.J. Helmick recently completed a community service project which benefited Angels for Animals.

The fifth- and sixth-graders had a school-wide collection

of spare change for three weeks, making it a competition between homeroom classes. The winning homeroom received a prize of cupcakes and juice.

The students collected a total of $500.84 to be donated to Angels for Animals. The four student chose Angels for Animals to receive their donation because they all like animals.

After some discussion, Heino, Logan and Helmick decided to purchase two of the one-square-foot blocks in the new Angel Wing building and give the remaining $100 to the Kitty BOGO Program. The two square feet come with naming rights, which will read CVMS 5-6 ACE Charity Committee.

Heino, Logan and Helmick also wanted to thank everyone at Canfield Village Middle School, including all students, parents and teachers, for helping them raise the money for Angels for Animals.

Canfield High School’s Aurora Fares received a “Multi-Year” award for her participation in State Science Day. Fares other awards include five Superior ratings at the Regional Lake-to-River Science Fair, three Superior ratings at the State Science Day and one Excellent rating at the State Science Day. Sergeant Wade Boley of the Columbiana Police Department led members of Girl Scout Troops 80191 and 80777 in Columbiana and 80018 in Canfield in a Circle of Friends activity centered on character as it relates to standing up against bullying.

Troop leader helps girls in Columbiana and Canfield take a stance against bullying Sergeant Wade Boley of the Columbiana Police Department asked questions, such as ‘who likes sports’ and ‘who has a sibling’ to local Girl Scouts gathered in a circle at the Columbiana Nazarene Church.

During the exercise for the Start With Hello Project, a youth violence prevention program, the Scouts who shared commonalities stepped inside the ring. Others, remaining in the outer circle, awaited their opportunities to meet peers with likenesses in the middle. Together, the Scouts discovered one another’s similarities and differences. They recognized each other as individuals, each with a personal story line, each valuable as a human being.

The Circle of Friends exercise was one of a dozen activities Columbiana Girl Scout Troop 80191 leader Kathy Keaggy Brown organized for her 22 troop members and girl scouts from Troop 80777, also in Columbiana, and 80018 in Canfield. At the heart of the exercises, which took place during two days, the girls took part in anti-bullying lessons tied to Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Peace it Together curriculum. They focused on courage, confidence, character and making the world a better place

by participating in various activities funded by a $100 Sandy Hook Promise mini grant.

“The Start With Hello Program focuses on the growing epidemic of social isolation in our society.

Excessive feelings of isolation can be associated with violent and suicidal behavior, and it can be a factor in tragedies like Sandy Hook,” said Keaggy Brown, explaining how the sessions in which she engaged the Girl Scouts aimed to help the girls not only identify bullying, but to take action to prevent it. “Our goal is to teach girls that when you see something wrong, say something to the bully, the target, a trusted adult. Don’t put yourself in danger, but do something, say something.”

In an activity that centered on self-confidence, the girls stranded necklaces with star-shaped beads symbolic of their individual attributes. If a Girl Scout received a yellow bead from one of her peers, for instance, that particular bead represented her helpfulness to others. Other beads, such as purple for intelligent and red for funny, came together in pieces for the Girl Scouts to loop around their necks or string to their backpacks, to glance at now and then, to remind them of their self-worth and value to others.

“The beads reflect characteristics they can be proud of in themselves. It’s about being confident.

Everybody has something good they can do. I think that talking about our strengths gives us confidence to say that’s not okay when something doesn’t feel right,” said Keaggy Brown, explaining the importance of children taking active roles when they or other children are mistreated or excluded.

While some children may feel comfortable pulling a peer away – from a situation in which he or she is treated unkindly – with an invitation to play or join them for lunch at a cafeteria table, others can take an equally significant role by engaging an adult.

“You should be nice to everyone, but you don’t have to be friends with everyone. If someone is making poor choices, tell a teacher. Get that person help,” Keaggy Brown, a CCESC Speech-Language Pathologist who works at McKinley Elementary School in Lisbon, advised her Girl Scouts. “The task of stopping school violence should not be the responsibly of children, but with programs like The Sandy Hook Promise, young people can be empowered to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness.

It’s a step in the right direction.”

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County is celebrating the March for Meals program, a national campaign to raise awareness of seniors living in isolation and others who need the services that Meals on Wheels provides to the community. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County had an appreciation breakfast for their volunteers on March 17 during their March for Meals campaign.

The March for Meals campaign is a national program started by Meals on Wheels of America to raise awareness to isolated seniors in the communities around America. The Mahoning County chapter had their appreciation breakfast to coincide with the campaign to thank their drivers.

While some Meals on Wheels organizations receive funding from the government, the Mahoning County chapter does not.

They stay maintained through the price of a meal, private donations and grants from local foundations.

Kathy Esseniyi, president of Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County, explained that the breakfast gives the organization an opportunity to thank the drivers and to get all the volunteers together. She said that the organization would not make it without them.

During the breakfast, Esseniyi took time to recognize Bill Brown and Lori Brennan, an important board member and a long-time driver with the organization. Esseniyi handed them an award during the breakfast and spoke about their service to the program.

Brown said that he wanted to help fill a need in the com-

munity. He say that a lot of older people had become housebound and sometimes did not have a family on which to rely. He wanted to make sure there was a resource in the community for those people so that they always had someone.

Brennan spoke about how much she enjoyed volunteering with Meal on Wheels. She said it was a very good use of her time and she liked seeing the appreciative people. She liked volunteering with the organization so much that she got her daughter to volunteer with her.

The March for Meals campaign began in 2002. Meals on Wheels of America chose the month because it is the month in which President Richard Nixon amended the Older Americans Act in 1972, which created nutrition programs for senior citizens.

Meals on Wheels of America has more than 5,000 community programs, and each program is run independently. The organization aims to help the elderly with nutrition and remaining able to live at home.

Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County also planned a bubble launch, an annual event at YSU, but a winter storm forced the organization to cancel the event.

The launch was aimed to raise awareness of the organization in order to spark interest in younger citizens.

Canfield speech and debate team wrapped up the season The Canfield speech and debate team competed at the Ohio Speech and Debate Association’s State Tournament, hosted by Sylvania Schools near Toledo, on March 2-3.

A total of 1,135 students representing 89 teams participated. At the conclusion of the competition, Canfield finished in 16th place.

Students from Canfield earning recognition at the State Tournament Awards Ceremony were Jennifer Smith and Dominic DuPonty as the state runners-up in Public Forum Debate and Ashley Reynolds placed fifth in Ohio in Declamation.

Overall, a total of 32 Canfield students qualified to the State Tournament. The qualifiers were Drake Safranic (top 18), Robert Faix (top 48), Brandon Stratton (top 96), Ben Lawson in Congressio-

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Welchman Zedaker of Hubbard recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner.

The couple’s children are Raymond Edward (Tamara) Zedaker of Hubbard; Leonard E. (Nancy) Zedaker of Hubbard; Susan G. (Samuel, deceased) Savon of Austintown; Diane C. (Daryl) Wolfe of Mineral Ridge; and Eric Welchman Zedaker of McDonald.

The couple have five grandchildren, Rachel, Yvonne Marie, Samuel, Jennifer and Bridget. Nine great-grandchildren complete their family.

Mr. Zedaker and the former Lillian Grace Bloom were married Feb. 4, 1958, in Vernon.

Mrs. Zedaker was a clerk at Meloni Grocery Store and at McKelvey’s Department Store as a bookkeeper in accounts payable. She had a cleaning business for 24 years and then was an environment associate at St. Elizabeth Hospital for 21 years. She also became a certified nurses aide.
