the eggs had a piece of candy inside and the children got to keep whatever they found. Greenbriar Healthcare Center hosts various events throughout the year to bring fun and togetherness to the community.

Youngstown State University student-athletes and members from Mahoning County Meals on Wheels prepared to launch their balloons outside the WATTS Center on March 20.
Balloon launch kicks-off March for Meals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County teamed with several Youngstown State University student-athletes to participate in the second annual balloon launch on March 20 at the WATTS Center. More than 20 student-athletes volunteered their time to celebrate the March for Meals program with the volunteers from Meals on Wheels. This is the second year that YSU studentathletes have collaborated with Meals on Wheels and the number of students who showed up this year compared to last year has doubled. Linda Jenkins, Meals on
Wheels Director, said how it was amazing seeing how supportive everyone at the launch was of the program. This is the 15th annual March for Meals which is a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels. “If it’s one or 100 it’s just awesome to think someone was so kind to give up their time,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County gets credit for the amount of people who attend their events and show off the Meals on Wheels March for Meals logo and get funding for the participation. This year, the balloons Meals on Wheels provided were biodegradable so when they were released into the air, they wouldn’t
harm the environment when they came back to the ground. The volunteers and studentathletes held the balloons and March for Meals signs for a picture inside the WATTS Center, then went outside to release the balloons. “I didn’t expect this many students, but the more the merrier. And it’s for a worthy cause,” said Jenkins. Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County is self-sufficient and runs off grants and donations, not federal funding. The volunteers will continue to deliver meals to the customers and prices will remain the same. For more information on how to contribute to March for Meals, visit www.MarchForMeals.com.

Annual Jazz Fest brings in special guest By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Hundreds of fans gathered to the Boardman Performing Arts Center on March 28 for the 17th annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest. Four jazz ensembles, including the eighth-grade group w ho k icked of f t he show, performed a variety of jazz songs for the audience. Jazz Ensemble 2 had special guest, Joe Graziosi, playing the tenor saxophone with them. There were 96 students in the jazz ensembles with several students who play in more than one of them. Grazioso is a BHS alumnus who graduated in 2006 and went on to pursue his dream of having a career as a musi-
cian. Having Grazioso wasn’t planned very far ahead of time making it a special surprise for the students and guests. The ja zz ensembles were d i rected by T homa s Ruggieri who has worked with the students almost every day to make Jazz Fest a success. Several students met every school day, while the others only met one or two times a week. “I know why I call these guys and girls my kids, because they’re just like my children. I love them that much and I’m so proud when they go out into the world and do things like what Joe is doing, being a great musician and a great human being,” said Ruggieri. Fifth- and sixth-grade students from local Catholic and public schools had the opportunity to explore Cardinal Mooney High School on March 31. C a r d i n a l Mo one y H i g h School students had the day off school, but several of them volunteered their time off to help out with the fifth- and sixthgrade students. The fifth- and sixth-grade students took four classes throughout their time there to discover what Mooney has to offer. “I’ve had a lot of fun,” said tenth-grade Mooney student Alexis Santor. “It really opens up their minds to their options when they’re older to different kinds of friend groups and what they want to get into.” The four-hour event gave the Mooney students an opportunity to show the younger students what Mooney is like. It also gave students from different schools an opportunity to meet each other and make new friends. All of the students took a science class, a drama class and an art class. Students had the opportunity to choose from a variety of classes like athletics, computers, foreign language and more to take as an elective. At the end of the day all of the students participated in an exciting Mooney Olympics Competition where the win-

ning schools were awarded with a plaque. Many students, elementary and high school, agreed the Olympics was the best part of the day. “I thought they had a lot of good things to do to help us learn,” said St. Charles fifthgrader Katie Frommelt. “They showed us how to do things by yourself so you’re prepared.” Frommelt said she enjoyed the Olympics the most because she likes to do active things. She is looking forward to coming to Mooney when she gets to high school. “It’s a nice community-building day to get the little ones ex-
cited about not only coming to Mooney, but coming to the high school and interacting with our kids,” said Rebecca Bayley, Director of Admission and Marketing. Bayley said she hopes the younger students see that as their education progresses that there is an academic element, there is a fun element and there’s a place for everyone at Cardinal Mooney. Cardinal Mooney is currently accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year and those who are interested can apply on www.cardinalmooney.com and find out more information.

Foundation to host Chocolate Fest to assist children and families battling illness The Piggyback Foundation of Youngstown is hosting its second Chocolate Fest, a fundraiser to benefit children and families facing life threatening illness. The event will take place at the Magic Tree Pub and Eatery in Boardman on May 11 from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and include an all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet. The Magic Tree will also be offering halfoff wine specials. Tickets can be purchased in advance via www.piggybackyoungstown.com. A limited number of tickets may be available at the door. The event also includes a 50/50 raffle and a basket auction. Sponsors of the event include The Goddard School in Boardman and Bisconti Orthodontics. All proceeds from the event benefit children in Youngstown in families battling life-threatening illness. In its inaugural year, Pigg yback Fou ndat ion of Youngstow n poured about $10,500 worth of goods and services into the Youngstown community. The Foundation
currently has three adopted families, and hopes to raise that number to five by the end of year two. The Piggyback Foundation of Youngstown is a volunteerbased organization dedicated to maintaining normalcy for families experiencing life-threatening illness. The Foundation provides funding, referrals and volunteers to help with family’s emotional needs - specifically those of the children. Over the past year, the Foundation has provided a backyard play set for a 6-year-old battling cancer; ongoing tutoring for continued academic success; a family membership to the YMCA and Neptunes Swim Team; all school supplies and fees paid for eight children; grocery gift cards to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, along with gifts for all family members; and numerous opportunities for family togetherness including movies, bowling and dinners.
