Wow your mom on Mother’s Day with these gift ideas By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com
Everyone knows the traditional Mother’s Day gifts – chocolate, flowers, card – but for those of you looking to really wow your mom or any mother figure in your life this Mother’s Day, which is May 8 for those of you that are perhaps caught off guard, consider the following options. And don’t worr y, they are WRIGHT mom-approved by some of our favorite mothers on the Neighbors team. 1. Dinner: I know what you are thinking: I don’t know how to/like/ feel like cooking. Well, that’s just fine. Several local restaurants will be offering specials just for this occasion, so call your mom’s favorite one and see what they are offering. Note: Call as early as you can as reservations may be necessary. 2. A massage: This doesn’t have to be a break the bank situation, either. Use your superior research skills and learn how to give a great foot massage. Turn it into a DIY manipedi session. Any pampering will be appreciated. 3. A spa basket: And speaking of pampering! Make your own spa basket for your favorite mom. Spa staples include: lotion, shower gel, bubble bath, face mask and a soothing-scented candle. If you re-
ally want to go over the top with this one, a new bathrobe or slippers are always appreciated. 4. Clean the house” And I don’t mean just once. Offer to clean once a week for the next month if you can fit it into your schedule. Or offer to take over a chore entirely for her. This is a great one that even younger children can participate in. 5. Free day: Ask Mom what is on her to-do list that day and give her the day off. Chances are she has been putting off that “me” time for a while, so she will love the chance to have a day just to herself. 6. A girls night out: This one is more for the fathers out there looking to do something special for their ladies. Call her friends together and give your lucky lady a night out on the town. This will also give you some wonderful bonding time with your little ones. 7. Movie night: All of Mom’s favorite movies all night long. Add a little popcorn and you are set for a great night in. 8. Membership to a book subscription service: This one might cost a little bit, but for book lovers there is nothing like opening a box full of brand new titles in their favorite genres. 9. Putt Putt/mini golf: Really, any small competitive sport, as long as your mother is interested in that kind of thing. With the weather finally behaving the way it is supposed to, invite your mom to get out and enjoy a little fresh air and some friendly competition. Happy Mother’s Day!

Kite flying fun for kids at Boardman library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted a kite-themed Night Owl story time on March 29 and a Go Fly a Kite event on March 30. Boardman librarian, Karen Saunders, led an evening and a morning event both about kites. Saunders started out both events by reading stories about kites. After the stories were over, it was time for a craft for the children to make kites. There were two kinds of kites the children made. One kite was a tiger the children could color and cut out and the other was a plain piece of paper they had to fold and could decorate however they wanted. “I have all kinds of stencils for them to pick what they want to use. I have a cat stencil, bears, pets, animals, ballerinas,” said Saunders. The children would pick from their favorite stencil to use to See KITE, Page 4

Boardman Township unveils new onlinetransaction exchange location

CALL TODAY! GET IT TODAY!
By Jordyn Grzelewski jgrzelewski@vindy.com
The town-ship this week unveiled a new service that aims to keep residents safe. Signs are posted at the township government center, 8299 Market St., to mark locations where residents can meet to exchange items purchased online. Those locations are the parking lot and the lobby of the police department, which is located in the government center. Those spots are equipped with video surveillance (and audio surveillance in the lobby) that is monitored continuously by the police dispatch center, making them ideal places to complete transactions made on online buy/sell/trade sites, township officials said. “There’s been a lot of use of the buy/sell/trades on Facebook,” township Administrator Jason Loree said. “It made sense to provide a space that was a little bit more safe than having them come to your home.” One “Boardman Area Buy Sell or Trade” page on Facebook, for example, has more than 30,500 members. Numerous other Facebook buy/sell/trade pages for this area also exist, in addition to classified-advertisement websites such as Craigs-list. Loree said he came up with the idea for a township exchange location after reading on social media sites about similar programs and talking with officials from other municipalities. “We heard the horror stories of people getting robbed at their house. So why not do this?” he said. As the township government center already was equipped with surveillance tools, the only cost to the township to add this service was to purchase two signs that read “Internet Purchase Exchange Location.” The parking lot location is accessible at all times. The government center lobby is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Boardman bands spring into music By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Boardman schools hosted its Spring Band Concert on April 22 at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The middle schools that participated in the performance were Boardman Glenwood Middle School and Boardman Center Middle School. The two schools combined to create three different bands that each performed their own pieces during the concert. Aseventh-gradejazzensemble
performed first, followed by an eighth-grade jazz ensemble and an eighth-grade concert band. The three bands performed between two and six pieces of music for the audience. Several students had the opportunity to perform a solo throughout the night. A few songs that the students performed were arranged by Boardman High School band director Thomas Ruggieri. Michael Shavock, the director of Glenwood Middle School; Steve Chambers, director of Center Middle School, and Ruggieri worked together to help the
students prepare for the spring concert. Fran Shevock, the accompanist, was given credit for her help in working closely with the students. The next Boardman band concert will be the Spring Concert of the Boardman Bands on May 3. There will be performances by the BHS Wind Ensemble and the combined Concert/Symphonic band. The concert will celebrate the last concert for Chambers. Chambers is retiring after spending 32 years with the Boardman Band Program.

Consignment store hosts grand opening By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Love Thy Curves celebrated it’s grand opening in Boardman on April 9. Patti Huggins, owner of Love Thy Curves, relocated her plus size consignment store from North Lima to Boardman. The North Lima store was opened in December of 2014. Love Thy Curves is the only plus size consignment store in the area and sells sizes 14 and up. Products range from casual dress to fancy and elegant. Love Thy Curves sells prod-
ucts such as clothes, jewelry, shoes and much more. There is a 90-day consignment period and those who bring in their clothes get 40 percent of the sale price. Whatever isn’t picked up is donated to a local charity, like the women’s shelter. Huggins is very active on Facebook and other social media outlets. She takes the time to engage with customers on social media and be interactive. “It’s been challenging, but it’s been great. I’ve enjoy it. It’s fun, I have met wonderful people,” said Huggins.
Being somewhere new is both exciting and nerve-wracking for Huggins. She has had a lot of help from family and friends to make sure the store would be prepared for the grand opening. “I just wanted something to show that we should just love our curves and not be embarrassed by them or afraid. I have a lot of signs that empower women. I wanted a place where people can come in no matter what size they are, we’re not judging you, it’s judgement free. Come in and just enjoy your shopping,” said Huggins.

Smit h, a magicia n based in Cleveland, came to Glenwood to put on a performance for guests of the community. Smith brought along his assistant, Julian Mendez, to help with different tricks and other illusions. There were many different tricks that Smith performed. There was a women and a young girl who both sat in chairs on stage, Smith then appeared to switch their minds and what he did to one person, would happen to the other. Toward the end of the show, Mendez put on his own performance. Mendez, a dancer with the Cleveland Cavaliers Scream Team, hyped up the crowd by doing a flip over four children. After that he showed off some more flips and a small break dance performance. Smith’s final performance was a trick inspired by famous magician, Harry Houdini. Smith had five volunteers
