Canfield High School’s varsity and junior varsity Academic Challenge teams finished third in their division during competition last month. The team comprised of Alec Kan, Carson Markley, Max Lee, Jowad Atway and Mitch Halley qualified for the National Academic Quiz Tournament in Texas in May. They also received first place for answering the most toss-up questions in math computation and current events. Individual awards went to Max Lee (honorable mention) and Alec Kan (First Team All-League). Everyone knows the traditional Mother’s Day gifts – chocolate, flowers, card – but for those of you looking to really wow your mom or any mother figure in your life this Mother’s Day, which is May 8 for those of you that are perhaps caught off guard, consider the following options. And don’t worr y, they are WRIGHT mom-approved by some of our favorite mothers on the Neighbors team. 1. Dinner: I know what you are thinking: I don’t know how to/like/ feel like cooking. Well, that’s just fine. Several local restaurants will be offering specials just for this occasion, so call your mom’s favorite one and see what they are offering. Note: Call as early as you can as reservations may be necessary. 2. A massage: This doesn’t have to be a break the bank situation, either. Use your superior research skills and learn how to give a great foot massage. Turn it into a DIY manipedi session. Any pampering will be appreciated. 3. A spa basket: And speaking of pampering! Make your own spa basket for your favorite mom. Spa staples include: lotion, shower gel, bubble bath, face mask and a soothing-scented candle. If you re-

Offer to clean once a week for the next month if you can fit it into your schedule. Or offer to take over a chore entirely for her. Putt Putt/mini golf: Really, any small competitive sport, as long as your mother is interested in that kind of thing. Gathering Place event Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. CVMS students treated to Jazz Clinic in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month

Ca n f ield V i l lage Midd le School band teacher James Volenik wanted to give his students some insight on the musical stylings of jazz, so he invited Mike Tomaro, Jazz Department Chair at Duquesne University, to host a Jazz Clinic on April 8. In celebration of JAM, jazz appreciation month, band students in grades 6-8 were able discuss the jazz genre with Tomaro, and even play a few bars with him. “Jazz is heavily based on improvisation where the musician creates the music on the spot using a series of chord progressions. Mr. Tomaro will show the students how to do call and response patterns and play the blues,” Volenik said. Toma ro is a g raduate of Duquesne and has been playing since he was in seventh grade. “I started playing in seventh grade, just like these kids here today. I graduated from Duquesne in 1980 and moved to Washington D.C. to play in the U.S. Army Band ‘Pershing’s Own’ until 1997 when I moved back to the Pittsburgh area and replaced my own band director at Duquesne. I was a local boy coming home,” Tomaro said. Tomaro began his presentation by telling the students jazz is everywhere and is actually a young music compared to classical music. “Jazz music is everywhere. You don’t have to go to a jazz concert to hear it. It’s even in the background of many commercials you see on TV. Jazz started in 1900 and is a very young music genre compared to classical music,” Tomaro said. Tomaro told the students there are three major styles of jazz - Dixieland Jazz, Hard Bop Jazz and Latin Jazz. “Louis Armstrong was the first jazz soloist. He was the first great one. There was no one to teach him and he improvised, which means he made the mu-

sic up as he went along. He is a very, very important man in the jazz genre,” Tomaro told the students. Tomaro then played a recording of a three-minute Dixieland Jazz song for the students. Next, Tomaro moved on to

Hard Bop Jazz and played a recording of it for the students. “Hard Bop Jazz came about in the 1950s and is like a march - a blues march. The instrumentation changed a lot from Dixieland. It is really a happy and active music. I hope you were

St. Thomas style on his soprano saxophone. “A solo has a lot of physicality. You use a lot of energy. You noticed I closed my eyes while I played. When I do that I am shutting everything out and am able to concentrate. It takes a high level of thinking. I hope

this music makes you move both inside and out. It is a very rhythmic music,” Tomaro told the students. Tomaro then treated the students to a saxophone solo of a classic, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” “When you play jazz, you play a lot of emotion. There is sadness and beauty in jazz. There are lots of dynamics which help create the emotion,” Tomaro said.

To end his time with the students, Tomaro participated in a call and response session with them, during which he played several short pieces of music on his saxophone and then the students repeated it back to him with their instruments. “Call and response is about the idea of listening and how we use our ears. We use basic songs and it is trial and error as we train our ears,” Tomaro said.

City’s Finance Director receives certificate The City of Canfield presented a certificate of appreciation to the City’s Finance Director, Christine Stack Clayton, during the regular meeting of Council on March 16. In each of the last five years, the State of Ohio Auditors Office has found Canfield City Finance practices to be in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles and the city has met stringent state criteria. State appointed auditors look at invoices, deposits, income tax returns and water bills to test for accuracy. In 1998, Clayton was hired by the City of Canfield as the Deputy Finance Director and she served in that capacity for 14 years. In January 2013, Clayton was appointed to the position of Canfield Finance Director. Clayton received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Youngstown State

Sencha k, R N, worked for 22 years at Mercy Health, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners. He began as an orderly then registered nurse in several departments, including neurovascular, orthopedic and the emergency room, and ultimately became the vice president of

shared support services. In 1999, he and an associate opened the Mahoning Valley Hospital; a new long-term acute care hospital where he served as the CEO until selling the hospital in 2008. A foundation was created following the sale, which Senchak administers. His dedication to the Mercy Health System and the Sisters of the Humility of Mary has been long-standing and this most recent investment will ensure a legacy for generations to come.

Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School entertained some very special visitors the morning of March 18. As part of the school’s annual Read-aThon, Canfield High School student-athletes visited the school to read to the students in their classrooms. Forty-five high school athletes from a variety of sports participated in the event. Senior wrestler Nick Sammarco and junior soccer and lacrosse player Isabelle Savich read to Jenna Donofrio’s firstgrade class. Sammarco chose to read “Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed” and Savich read “Do Not Open This Book” to the students. Before reading to the students, Sammarco and Savich had some advice for the firstgraders about being a successful student-athlete, with a focus on being organized. “Being organized is very important in keeping up with your grades and sports. If you follow the rules and do your homework, you will be able to play, and be successful, in sports,” Sammarco said. Savich echoed Sammarco’s remarks.

“You have to stay organized with your homework. You have to be focused on your grades. Grades come first and sports come second. Being organized is a big part of both school and sports,” Savich said. Donofrio then split her class into a girl group and a boy group so Sammarco and Savich could read to the students in a smaller setting. After Sammarco and Sav-

ich each read to both the boys group and girls group, the class came together for their visitors to read them one more book, “Hey, Little Ant.” Donofrio explained that the class would soon be starting a unit about ants, so the book was a good fit. Four-year-old class member Anthony DeLucia invited his mom, Kari, to Canfield United Methodist Preschool’s annual Mommy’s Play Day where they played and did puzzles together on April 16.

Mothers of students at Canfield United Methodist Preschool began April 16 with a similar feeling to how they start some week days. They took their child to preschool, but on this very special occasion, they were invited to stay and play. The school hosted its annual Mommy’s Play Day, a favorite of students, moms and teachers alike, during which moms get an inside look at their preschooler’s time in school. The school offers three classes: a 3-year-old class with lead teacher Ellen VanDussen and assistant teacher Shirley Merritt, a 4-year-old class with lead teacher Ellen Bennett and assistant teachers Lisa Helmick and Merritt and a pre-kindergarten class with lead teacher VanDussen and assistant teacher Brenda Williams. Each class has a scheduled time of an hour to play and have fun with their moms at the school. “Mommy’s Play Day is an abbreviated version of a typical preschool day. The children have a chance to play with their moms, show them around the classroom and share with them what they do at school. They get so excited for this day because usually it is the parents sharing and showing the children

around places, but today it is the opposite and the children get to share their school with their moms,” VanDussen said. The students prepared for their mom’s visit the week before Mommy’s Play Day. Along with a handmade invitation to Mommy’s Play Day, the students made nametags for their moms and helped prepare a snack for the big day. The 3-year-old class made a snack mix for their moms, while the 4-year-old class made a layered snack mix of air-popped popcorn, Cheerios and M&M’s in a plastic cup, which was made to look like a flower pot with a small paper flower with the student’s name ‘growing’ out of the snack. The pre-kindergarten class made a snack of pudding pops for their moms. In anticipation of the mommies visiting, each class also decorated a bulletin board in the hallway leading to the classroom. The 3-year-old bulletin board was filled with paper butterf lies the children made for their mothers, with the phrase ‘Moms are the wind beneath our wings’ in bold letters. The children also ‘wrote’ a letter to their mom by finishing the sentence, ‘I love when…’ The 4-year-old class’ bulletin board read ‘Our moms are special because…’ with the students pro-

viding their answers along with a hand-drawn portrait of their mothers. The pre-kindergarten class created fruit cup flower art for their mothers and also completed a page of questions titled All About My Mom, with such questions as her favorite color, favorite food and what she always forgets. Each class also made shadow box art to decorate the classroom for their moms. Stations were set up throughout the classroom where the students and their moms could choose to draw on easels together, play at the doctor’s of-

fice, read, color or play with blocks and puzzles. After the 4-year-old class students and moms all had a chance to visit the stations, they were asked to clean up the toys and meet at the front of the room, where Bennett was waiting for them. Bennett explained to the moms that the children have a meeting every morning where they recite the “Pledge of Allegiance,” sing their flag song, sing “God Bless America” and t hen per form t he “Week ly Rap,” which included motions and focused on the days of the

week. At this special meeting, Bennett asked the moms to participate with the class. Bennett then read “I Wish You More” to the students and the moms. As a special surprise, the students then presented each of their moms a paper flower bouquet while reciting, “Thank you for coming. We love you.” After enjoying their special snack and to close the special play day, both moms and students formed their friendly circle to sing the “Goodbye Song” and “Buckle Up Song” together.

Second-grade students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School in Canfield spent some time at Ford Nature Center in Mill Creek Park. The Habitat is Home program is designed to teach students about the various habitats both to mankind and wildlife. Students learned that in order to survive in a habitat, all animals have certain needs including food, water, space and shelter. He has won several academic awards and took part in a Biomedical Engineering Job Shadow experience with the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University. Vitto plans to attend Georgia Tech University in the Fall and major in Bio-medical Engineering.

Hospice of the Valley to train new volunteers Hospice of the Valley is hosting training sessions for new companion volunteers to visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays through May 3 from 1-4:30 p.m. at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Sears Concourse Eastwood Mall, located at 5555 YoungstownWarren Road in Niles. During the training program, volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how they fit into that team. Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and support to the family members. Volunteers may also assist with indirect patient services such as clerical support, reception desk, mail team and fundraising. Volunteer assignments are made close to the volunteer’s home. The national organization was

formed in 1924 by then General of the Army George “Blackjack” Pershing, who saw the need to insure for the security of the nation by having a strong reserve force. For more than 90 years the ROA has provided the tools and resources for reservists and their families to be able to succeed in and out of uniform. Membership is open to officers, warrant officers and non-commissioned officers.

Happily Ever After Natalie Draa v Derek DiTullio Natalie Ruth Draa and Derek Reinhart DiTullio were joined in marriage in a 2:30 p.m. Sept. 26, 2015, ceremony at St. Anthanasius Catholic Church officiated by the Rev. Robert Norton. A reception followed at the Hampton Banquet Center in Gibsonia, Pa. The couple took a wedding trip to Kona, Hawaii, and live in Gibsonia. The bride is the daughter of Attorney Charles Draa of Boardman and Dr. Virginia Draa of Monroe, Ohio. The groom’s parents are Samuel and Jacqueline DiTullio of Pittsburgh. Mrs. DiTullio wore a gown of ivory satin with a ruched asymmetrical bodice and chapel length train, adorned with crystals, pearls and bugle beads on the bodice and corset back, that was designed and made by her mother. The ensemble was completed by a veil embellished with pearls and beads, also her mother’s, and a headband of crystals and pearls. Maid of honor was Lynn Strezeski, and bridesmaids were the bride’s cousins, Jacquiline Eickleberger and Emma Hamilton. They wore sapphire blue satin dresses. The bride’s niece, Addison Draa, was flower girl. She wore a dress of sapphire blue satin. Bryan Assisi performed duties of best man. Daniel Reinhart, the groom’s cousin, and Aaron Draa, the bride’s brother, were groomsmen. The

groom’s godson, Malachi McKay, was ring bearer. Also participating were Eric DiTullio, James Hamilton, Christopher Catone and Joseph and Darlene MacBenn. The bride earned bachelor’s degrees in architectural engineering and civil engineering from Drexel University. She is a facilities services manager at the U.S. Government General Services Administration in Pittsburgh. Mr. DiTullio received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from LaRoche College. He works in security services for the Moorehead Federal Building in Pittsburgh.

Her husband is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and attended the University of Findlay. He is an insurance sales representative with Germain Insurance in Dublin.

Candace Barak, John Stefancin to wed June 4 Announcement of the forthcoming marriage of Candace Marie Barak and John Joseph Stefancin is being made by their parents.
