The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of May, the stations focus on Approaches Toward Learning — the attitude that children bring to social interactions and learning experiences. The stations will encourage initiative and curiosity. They will also develop the children’s level of attention, engagement and persistence as they complete fun activities. These factors are consistent predictors of academic success. Stop by the Austintown branch to visit kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.

Austintown juniors and seniors who met the school’s criteria for the organization were invited to join the group. Students who were inducted had to showcase the four qualities of NHS: character, scholarship, leadership and service. Students complete a number of volunteer hours and help organize the induction ceremony. Each year students vote on an outstanding speaker to present during the ceremony. This year school counselor Maribeth McGlynn was voted in unanimously as the speaker. Students introduced McGlynn stating that her “unparalleled selflessness” made her the only logical choice for the speaking position. During her speech McGlynn discussed the dedication the NHS students showed to bettering their community. “I hope you always remember your

Austintown library teaches portrait drawing By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Austintown library hosted the second portrait drawing class on April 2. Librarian Andrea Zupcsan organized the event, where attendees had to participate in portrait drawing one before attending the second class.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” Zupcsan said. “Everyone is a different degree of finished with their art.” Zupcsan said that the two class program is designed to teach community members about the basics of portrait drawing, then give them time to work on their pieces. See PORTRAIT, Page 10

Community members used photos of loved ones to draw potraits on April 2 for the second Potrait Drawing class hosted at the Austintown library.

PORTRAIT Continued from Page 9

“It’s just a matter of getting people to work on art of any form, and see what everyone can do,” Zupcsan said. Community members attended the first drawing class bringing photos they wished to draw. Zupcsan made copies of the photos, drawing a grid pattern over them and explaining basic sketching and shading

principals. Attendees brought a variety of photos, including pictures of their children, parents and grandparents. Both classes were two hours in length, with the second class focused on finishing the projects with Zupcsan around to answer any questions. “It’s great, almost everyone comes back,” Zupcsan said. “We always have a good time.” For more information on upcoming library events, go to www.libraryvisit.org.
