Secure drug disposal now offered at Akron Children’s in Boardman Akron Children’s Hospital is now collecting unused prescription medications in a secure dropbox at the Beeghly Campus in Boardman. The hospital recently installed the collection box that is part of the LifeInCheck Consumer Drug TakeBack program. It’s located at 6505 Market St. in the lobby of Building A. While many communities participate in annual drug collection events, having the receptacle available permanently will allow Akron Children’s to provide the public with an easily accessible site to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications. Accepted in the dropbox are unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications and pet medications. Not accepted are illegal drugs, inhalers, needles, liquids and lotions. For more information, call 330-746-8700.

BHS ranks among top Ohio high schools Boardman High School is once again ranked as a top high school in the state of Ohio, according to the just released rankings by “U.S. News & World Report.” The Silver Medal Status considers college readiness, graduation rates, AP testing and proficiency scores, among other factors. At number 54 this year, Boardman High School continues to be recognized as a high performing high school. This year, “US News” surveyed more than 900 public high schools in Ohio. The rankings are based on students who perform better than expected in their state, as well as disadvantaged students who perform better than the state average. Weight is also given to student graduation rates that meet or exceed a national standard, and how well students are prepared for college level work.

Boardman heads to state Envirothon competition By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Student members of Boardman’s Envirothon team received first place at the annual North East Ohio competition on April 25. The group’s coach and Boardman Advanced Biology Teacher, Heather Moran, said that Boardman has been participating in the competition for 10 years. “We study environmental issues such as water and lake quality, how to sustainably feed people, wildlife management and forestry,” Moran said. Moran, who has been coaching the team for all 10 years, said that the group is made up of two teams with about four alternates, comprising 15 students all together. Students try out for the team in late February, according to Moran, and practice once a week through March and April in preparation. “We study a wide variety of topics,” Moran said. “We study the soil stability for planting or building, we identify animal tracks and trees.” The competition takes place outdoors, where students do field testing and put together an

oral presentation that they present to a panel of judges. Moran said that the judges then have the opportunity ask students questions about their presentation. Topics cover five areas, including soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues.

This year, Boardman students won four of the five areas of the competition, with many students taking home individual medallions. Boardman has a history of being successful at the Envirothon competition, taking second place in the state competition last year. The team also quali-

fied for the national tournament in 2013, though the tournament was cancelled due to storm damage in Georgia, where it was to take place. With this win, students once again qualified for Ohio’s state tournament, which will take place June 9-11 at Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Boardman students and teachers got the oppurtunity to Skype with a group of people from Thailand on March 27 with Lamun Smith translating.

Students Skype Thailand By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Students from Boardman Glenwood Junior High School Skyped with members of the Pa Dang Ngan village in Thailand on March 27. Lamun Smith, wife of principal Bart Smith and Thailand native, translated for both groups throughout the interaction. “They have a relationship with that village that continues to grow,” said Amy Radinovic, community specialist. Students were able to make this connection thanks to a Turning Foundation grant for $5,000. Teachers Tim Harker, Carrie Hurd and Chelsea Wisbar received the grant in October for the project. “It’s a great opportunity, and

the students very much enjoy working on it,” Harker said. He explained that the students are working on creating web sites to address issues faced by students in rural Thailand. Radinovic said that this project was a way for students to learn first hand about the problems they are trying to address. “It’s a cross cultural project that is really important to the students and teachers,” Radinovic said. Thailand students chose three issues from the 17 United Nations substantial goals list that were most relevant. The students chose zero hunger, poverty and good health and wellness for Boardman students to address. “We don’t often get to interact directly with people in other countries so this is a very cool opportunity for students,” Radinovic said.
