Basket raffle event to benefit two dog rescues Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a basket raffle event on May 19 at The Federal, located at 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12-6 p.m. with baskets drawn at 6 p.m. One hundred baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off. The winners drawn at 6 p.m. and need not be present. Concert series begins June 5 The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. Chapter Chat book club If you love books, attend to the Chapter Chat book club at the Austintown library where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month.

Each month will be a new genre.

The next meeting is May 23 at 6:30 p.m. This month, they will be reading “Me Talk Pretty One Day”

by David Sedaris. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults.

Crossroads Church to host conference event The “Your Image by His Design” conference will take place at Crossroads Church, located at 554 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown on May 19 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event organizers are Three in ONE Ministries and Crossroads Church. The event is designed to be an empowering experience where you will look at your mind, body and spirit through the lense of spirituality. Attendees will bring their spiritual gifts to light, discover their strengths, identify their values and core beliefs, learn about the science of their thought life and how it affects health and selfimages; as well as, learning about the science of fashion according to their face and body shapes.

Each attendee will leave with their own personal “storybook” - completed throughout the course of the day. Those attending the conference are asked to bring a laptop, tablet and/or smartphone for online testing purposes. The conference will include a catered lunch provided by Panera Bread (choose option when purchasing ticket), Strengths Finder 2.0 book and online assessment code, spiritual gifts assessment and personal style profile.

The “Detectives Wanted” library program featured fingerprinting, ISpy activities, a scavenger hunt and “code breakers.” Pictured, Harlan and Remington Fish broke codes using a grid key code.

She had a fingerprinting station where the children could make fingerprints of each of their fingers on a piece of paper. Another station had invisible ink to use while making a painting. The ink prevented the other paints to cover it, so the children used the ink to make designs and then painted over those designs.

She also set out a handful of simple searching games where the children tried to find different things in a picture. They also participated in a scavenger hunt that sent them around the children’s section of the library for different clues.

They completed a few “code breaker” games as well. The children solved coded messages using a code key. The types of keys were a grid key, a number key and a pigpen key. The students used a grid to solve their code with the grid key.

The number code simply had numbers represent letters, such as A=0 and Z=25. Finally, the pigpen code used a symbol for each letter.

Mystery and Tea book club Join the Austintown library on May 8 at 6 p.m. to sip tea and discuss your latest mystery novel find. This event is for adults.

Pre-kindergarten story time This program, which will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays during May at the Austintown library, is for 4and 5-year-olds to help develop preliteracy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Mashiska of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus spoke to Rotary Club

at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, located at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Runners of all experience levels are welcome. The entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefitting the church. There will be top overall finisher and age group awards. There will be a free children’s dash event for children who are ages 10-years-old and younger.

The children’s dash begins at 7 p.m. with the mile race beginning at its conclusion. A free hot dog and soft drink ticket will be given to all runners. Any questions can be directed to Matt at 330-398-5512.

John Mashiska, local resident and head of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus, explained the history and activities of the group to members of the Rotary Club of Austintown at their April 2 meeting. Founded in Connecticut in 1882, it is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world, now numbering 1.9 million members.

Originally founded to help immigrants find jobs and provide insurance for working men, it continues to now provide help to families in need of their social services and also honor guards for funerals and activities involving the church officials. Maeson Green, a junior at Austintown Fitch High School, is among the youngest entrepreneurs in Austintown, restoring leather and canvas shoes to their original looks and quality. Green explained to members of the Rotary Club of Austintown how he developed a special cleaner and processes to restore the shoes, and is now accepting local and nationwide orders while still participating in the Fitch band, Future Business Leaders and the Community Connections program, a joint effort of the Rotary Club and Austintown Schools that provides mentors to encourage motivated students on their career path. Using the name MBG Restoring, Green has also repaired the Fitch color guard and flag line boots, and also takes custom orders by mail and connections he has established through his hard work. Ted Fauceglia (right) was the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon meeting of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association (MSVCMOAA) at the Consolidated Activities Center located at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna.

Fauceglia has been a regular feature writer and photographer for “American Angler,” “Fly Fisherman,” “Field and Stream,” “Outdoor Life” and more. His book, “Mayflies” became a number one best seller in its genre on Amazon. The chapter members were entertained with a demonstration and explanation of the art of fly fishing and to see a multitude of colorful fishing flies that he hand crafted. Mothers joined their children at Austintown Intermediate School for their mother/student dance on April 6.

The school’s PTA set up the “Starry Night“ dance for the families. The night included a dance in the gymnasium, a catered dinner in the cafeteria, a photo booth and a basket raffle.

“We have the WATCH D.O.G.S. program at the school for the dads, so we wanted to do something for the moms,” said PTA President Patty Ritter.

This was the first time the school had a parent/child dance like this. They sold out with 500

people in attendance. Ritter gave each of the children a glow stick halfway through the event.

In the gym, Melton Entertainment set up DJ equipment including speakers, lights and a fog machine for the dance.

The DJ played current pop songs as well as dance songs like “La Macarena.” The students danced with their parents or with groups of their friends.

Families ate and had their pictures taken in the cafeteria.

April 18 Arrest: Police on South Raccoon Road pulled over and took Kenneth F. Spivey, 33, into custody after ascertaining Spivey, of Everett Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on a charge of failing to comply with a Campbell Municipal Court order.

Domestic violence: Joseph R. Mendez, 31, of Notre Dame Avenue, Austintown, was charged with the crime after his wife alleged that during an all-day argument between them, Mendez had injured her right foot and a small toe.

Arrest: Alyssa D. Turner, 22, who listed addresses in Cleveland and Parma, surrendered on Austintown Area Court warrants charging one count each of possessing criminal tools and soliciting.

Theft: A cellphone was reportedly sold in the 6000 block of Mahoning Avenue for counterfeit money that amounted to $455.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Moorefield Road woman alleged her daughter had taken her car without permission.

Identity theft: A Westminster Avenue resident discovered someone without authorization had opened an account in the victim’s name and obtained a check.

April 19 Theft: A vehicle check in the 6000 block of Mahoning Avenue led to the arrest of Timothy J. Lambert on a theft charge. Lambert, 52, of Youngstown-Kingsville Road, Vienna, was accused of stealing four steaks and a bag of shrimp valued at $97 from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave. April 20 Arrest: Officers on state Route 46 pulled over then arrested Ryan C. Gelardi, 41, of Berry Blossom Drive, Canfield, upon learning that he was wanted on a felony grand-theft warrant.

Theft: A resident in the 2500 block of Amberly Street reported an Electronic Benefit Transfer card missing.

April 21 Arrest: Lateisha D. Brunner, 28, of Compass West Drive, Austintown, was charged with falsification after having been pulled over on South Meridian Road. Brunner provided a phony name and two false dates of birth before a hospital wristband she was wearing revealed her real name, a report stated.

Arrest/drugs: A traffic stop near Decamp and South Meridian roads led to the arrest of Christopher J. Richards, 22, who listed Austintown addresses on Wedgewood Drive and Deer Creek Court and was wanted on an Austintown Area Court warrant. Richards also faced a felony drug-possession charge and was cited on a marijuana-possession charge when, police alleged, a bag of suspected marijuana and five hits of LSD were found.

Theft: A woman reportedly stole two bags of clothing and shoes from the J.C. Penney store, 6000 Mahoning Ave., then fled in a light-blue Nissan Altima.

Possible theft: A wallet was reportedly lost or stolen at a South Raccoon Road business.

Theft: Authorities were dispatched to the Trumbull County jail to take custody of Jason C. Adams of Lexington Place, Austintown, who was wanted on a theft charge. Adams, 27, was accused of stealing a $378, 43-inch smart TV earlier this month from Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. April 22 Arrest: Rayshaun L. Clay, 20, of Salt Springs Road, Youngstown, was taken into custody after police had stopped his vehicle near North Four Mile Run Road and determined he was wanted on a Youngstown Municipal Court bench warrant.

Arrest: Authorities responded to a possible altercation at a Westchester Drive apartment, where they charged Terry A. Pryor Jr., 31, with falsification after alleging Pryor, of Westchester, Austintown, had on several occasions provided a false name and date of birth. He also gave a Social Security number that contained 10 digits, a report said.

April 23 Arrest: While dealing with a possible domestic situation on Dunbar Street, officers took Rachel L. Clinton, 29, into custody. Clinton, of Taft Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on two Youngstown warrants, one of which accused her of failing to appear in court on a drug-possession charge.

Theft: James S. Graham, 63, of Lakeside Drive, Mineral Ridge, was charged after he reportedly left Rulli Bros., 4331 Kirk Road, on a Western Reserve Transit Authority bus without paying for 50 food items valued at $205 when a debit card he used was declined several times.

Theft: A woman reportedly stole various groceries from Giant Eagle.

Arrest: A traffic stop near Mahoning Avenue led to the arrest of Malcolm A. Carter, 24, of Alameda Avenue, Youngstown. Carter was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Theft: Someone stole a shopping cart filled with items from Rulli Bros.

Arrest: After pulling him over near Mahoning and North Navarre avenues, authorities took into custody Tyrell E. Hodge of North Lakeview Avenue, Youngstown, upon discovering Hodge, 20, was wanted on a bench warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court.

April 24 Counterfeit: A fake $50 bill was reportedly used at Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Possible theft: Narcotics were reported missing from Meridian Arms Living Center, 650 S. Meridian Road.

April 25 Arrest: Police received word about a possibly impaired driver on state Route 11 who reportedly had almost struck a guardrail before charging Tatianna M. Vargas of Woodhurst Drive, Austintown, with operating a vehicle impaired and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Vargas, 28, registered a 0.218 blood-alcohol content, which is more than double Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report stated.

Arrest: Authorities took custody of Sarah M. Vangundy, 33, no address listed, who was wanted on a felony warrant from Austintown charging violation of a protection order.

Drugs: After pulling her over in the 4400 block of Mahoning Avenue, officers charged Leslie R. Kyle, 43, of Triumph Avenue, Lake Milton, with one felony count each of drug abuse (methamphetamine) and possessing a controlled substance as well as one misdemeanor count of possessing drug paraphernalia after alleging Kyle admitted having a bag of suspected methamphetamine, five over-thecounter pills with no prescription and a cut straw common in drug use.

Arrest: Police received information about a possibly intoxicated motorist near Mahoning Avenue and state Route 46 before charging David K. Lewis of Woodland Trace, Austintown, with operating a vehicle impaired.

Lewis, 60, who authorities alleged had struck a vehicle parked on the road near his residence, also was charged with having a suspected marijuana pipe in his pocket.

Theft: A Bainbridge Street resident discovered $2,000 had been removed from a bank account.

Arrests: A traffic stop in the 800 block of North Meridian Road resulted in falsification charges against Asia R. Mason, 19, of Windsor Avenue, Youngstown, and Deandre

D. Madison, 21, of West Warren Avenue, Youngstown. Mason and Madison lied about their names and dates of birth to avoid being arrested on warrants, a report showed.

April 26 Theft: Pension checks were reportedly stolen then cashed in the 2500 block of South Raccoon Road.

April 27 Arrest: Youngstown police on Mahoning Avenue relinquished custody of Carl K. Drayton, 42, whose last known address was on Oakwood Avenue in Youngstown. He was wanted on a warrant charging unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after a woman alleged Drayton had driven her 2004 Buick without consent.

Identity theft: A Briarwood Lane resident discovered credit cards had been opened in the victim’s name.

Theft: Various items were missing from a home in the 500 block of Impala Drive.

Trespassing: Two juveniles reportedly entered Austintown Early Learning Center, 4211 Evelyn Road.

April 28 Arrest: A traffic stop on South Raccoon Road resulted in the arrest of Saleh Alsafar, 19, of South Raccoon, Austintown. Alsafar was wanted on a bench warrant accusing him of failing to appear in Austintown Area Court.

Criminal damaging: A vehicle’s tire was cut in a parking lot at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, 655 N. CanfieldNiles Road.

Domestic violence: Joseph P. Kane, 31, of Sprucewood Drive, Austintown, was charged with the crime when his wife alleged that after having locked herself in a vehicle in their garage for her safety during an argument, Kane grabbed a baseball bat and threatened to harm her with it, causing the accuser to fear for her life.

Drugs: Police cited Nicholas D. Georgiadis, 35, during a traffic stop near Silica Road.

Georgiadis, of Devitt Avenue, Campbell, had suspected marijuana in a cigarette pack, a report said.

Theft: Brian J. Zordich, who listed Youngstown addresses on Moherman and South Hazelwood avenues, was charged with stealing about $200 worth of steaks from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave. Zordich, 52, also was wanted on a Youngstown warrant.

Drugs: Officers at an Operating a Vehicle Impaired checkpoint on Route 46 handed a minor-misdemeanor citation to Taylor J. Ford, 25, of Pratt Street, Niles, charging marijuana possession.

Citation: After pulling over a vehicle on Route 11, officers cited Dorothy N. Misik, 50, of South Hazelwood Avenue, Youngstown, on a charge of displaying a fictitious registration when, they said, her car’s registration sticker had been tampered with.

April 29 Arrest: Police in the 5400 block of SeventySix Drive picked up Hailey E. Nelson, 21, of Elizabethtown, Pa., upon ascertaining she was wanted on two warrants from Juniata County, Pa.

The Austintown library invited a speaker to teach basic musical lessons to attendees at their “Fundamentals of Music Theory” program on April 5.

Shirley Bartlett taught attendees about elements of music in her weekly library session. She brought a small electronic keyboard with her to show examples of the concepts as well as give the learners some practice.

“Music has been a huge part of my life,” said Bartlett, who has been a f lautist for four different symphonic and orchestral bands. She said that a book by renowned composer Leonard Bernstein sparked her interest in music theory and how music is made. She previously taught flute lessons, but she said she did not enjoy them nearly as much as giving lessons on theory.

She bega n by expla ining the bass and treble clefs. She handed out staff paper and explained the different notes on

each line and space for both clefs. She then went over different common time signatures, such as 4/4 and 3/4 time. She demonstrated the difference between 3/4 and 6/8 time and spoke about unusual time signatures, such as 7/8.

Bartlett then wrote out the different types of note value: whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes. After which, she used the piano to teach t he attendees about whole steps and half steps and major chords, such as the major C chord.

They then began to focus on key signatures. Bartlett wrote down a series of signatures and instructed upon what they do to a piece of music and how to know the name of the key signature. This led into a discussion of the common major scales.

Bartlett ended the session after teaching the major scales.

She has the music theory classes each Thursday of April and the first Thursday of May at two in the library.

Michelle Elia, State Support Team Region 5 coordinator, will share practices, techniques and books that reinforce how to develop print awareness and print knowledge skills using read aloud techniques at this event at the Austintown library on May 11 at 9:30 a.m. This workshop is open to librarians, teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and anyone looking to make help children acquire

Steven Armour and Amy Dravecky, both of Cuyahoga Falls, exchanged marriage vows July 15, 2017, at St. Christine Church. The ceremony was solemnized by the Rev. John Keehner.

Concelebrants were the Revs. Zachary Coulter and J. James Korda. A reception followed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica.

The parents of the bride are Joseph and Gina Dravecky of Austintown.

The groom is a son of Andra Armour of Olmsted Falls and William Amour of Parma.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and reside in Cuyahoga Falls.

The bride wore a soft white A-line gown with embroidered lace, handbeaded accents, a curved neckline, cap sleeves and a scalloped chapel-length train. The ensemble was completed by an elbow-length veil edged in lace appliques.

Alyssa Medvec was maid of honor.

The bridesmaids, wearing Wedgewood blue dresses, were Emma Taffe, Jeannette Iskander and Margarita Lider.

The flower girl was Amelia Johns, niece of the groom.
