CHS bands to present final concert The Canfield High School bands will present their final concert of the school year on May 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The annual spring concert, titled “MetroMusic,” will feature music inspired by the sights and sounds of big cities. The concert is free and open to the public. A donation will be accepted at the end of the concert to benefit the Canfield bands and all concert attendees are invited to a cookie and punch reception immediately afterwards in the cafeteria.

Knitting guild has May 8 meeting The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. There will be a new stitch presented and a pattern for the Pendenza Cowl will be given. The cowl requires (approximately) 240 yards of a DK weight cotton and size 5, 24 inch circular needle. Anyone interested in joining the group or donating yarn for their charity work can contact wrkg. ohio@gmail.com.

Historical Society to meet on May 10 The Canfield Historical Society’s

annual Spring Lecture Series continues on May 10 at 7 p.m. with a lecture on Agnew Farm Equipment: 194 years serving the community. John Agnew will speak about the family business, which began in 1824. Today the business is still being operated by the Agnew family, one of the oldest family run businesses in the State of Ohio. The free lecture will take place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. No pre-registration is necessary, and anyone is invited to attend, regardless of membership. If you require more information on the lecture, call the Canfield Historical Society at 330-533-3458. The Canfield Historical Society is continuing its mission of collecting Canfield history with a scanning project where everyone who wishes to participate is invited to do so. Attendants to the lecture are encouraged to bring, if they are in possession of, any photos or documents relating to Canfield History to be scanned. Therefore adding to the Historical Society’s collection.

CHS inducts students into National Honor Society

Canfield High School had its annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony on April 25, during which 59 students were honored by the society.

The student inductees were escorted by their parents into the auditorium and each student was introduced to an auditorium filled with fellow students, family and friends. They were greeted by Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan, Director of Curriculum and Instruction John Tullio and Principal Michael Moldovan.

As the students were introduced, Canfield High School National Honor Society co-advisers Tim Wensel and Mike Ruark greeted each one and presented them with the National Honor Society gold medal, which was placed around their neck. The students crossed the stage and signed the NHS membership book.

Current senior members of the society spoke on the four Pillars of the National Honor Society.

Cara DeChurch spoke on Character, Samuel Accordino spoke on Leadership, Allison Leone spoke on Service and Sydney Lewis spoke on Scholarship.

“I believe character is based on how brave or courageous you are. The ability to be true to your morals and values is the true test of character. We are so different and unique in what we can offer the world, that having courage makes your character stand out,” DeChurch told the

inductees during her speech, after which she lit the candle for Character.

While speaking about leadership, Accordino told the students to lead by taking chances.

“Leadership requires responsibility. The trust of those you are leading is in you. Leadership is avoiding conflict and keeping peace. You must stand out.

Lead by taking chances. You must have confidence, without which how do you lead a group of people,” Accordino said, after which he lit the candle for Leadership.

Leone told the students you get out of Service what you put in.

“I have learned that you get more out of your service experience than you put into it. It is a challenge for people to put themselves out of their comfort zone, but they have grown so much by the end of their service.

Even the smallest act of kindness does not go unnoticed,” Leone said before lighting the candle for Service.

In her speech about Scholarship, Lewis told the students they must have a fire in their heart to succeed.

“You must be willing to give time and effort. You must have determination, character and most of all fire in your heart to succeed. The power of knowl-

edge is immeasurable,” Lewis said before lighting the candle for Scholarship.

Michael Strohecker, Canfield High School health teacher, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. Strohecker told the students to not let one accomplishment define them and to live a life of honor and love.

“We are here to celebrate the new National Honor Society students inductees. Their families should be very proud. I am here to tell them to never quit striving toward the four pillars.

Don’t let one event define you.

Live a life of honor and love. The four pillars can be summed up to mean love. Develop a culture of honor in your life,” Strohecker said.

Strohecker went on to tell the students to honor others.

“Honor others. Learn and grow from experiences and the wisdom of others. We have so much to enjoy and learn from one another. What if we all were a little more patient, kind, loving and honoring. We must have faith, hope and love and the greatest is love,” Strohecker said Wensel addressed the audience.

“Cara personifies service.

She went above and beyond, with more than 150 community service hours. Her passion is the theater and has used her talent to help choreographed shows at the middle school for

those students and has helped many other organizations,” Wensel said.

Wensel thanked the senior National Honor Society members.

“I would like you to join me in thanking our seniors. Mr. Ruark and I have enjoyed working with you. You have shown your dedication and service to your school, NHS chapter and community,” Wensel said.

He addressed the inductees.

“I challenge you to continue to work hard, show integrity, show compassion toward others and lend a helping hand.

Look at the accomplishments of those who came before you

and strive to reach the bar that has been set and raise it even higher,” Wensel said.

Wensel led the new inductees in the National Honor Society Pledge for Membership, after which they received a standing ovation from their parents, grandparents, friends, classmates and teachers.

“I present to you the newest members of the Canfield National Honor Society Chapter,” Wensel said.

April 24 Possible theft: Police received a report of prescription medication possibly missing from a residence in the 40 block of Talsman Drive.

April 25 Citation: Steven Phillis, 56, of Western Reserve Road, Salem, was cited on a charge of failing to maintain assured clear distance after police had responded to a three-car crash on East Main Street.

April 26 Arrest: Officers on West Main Street pulled over then charged Tyrell Jones, 23, of Braddock, Pa., with driving under suspension.

Citation: Officers cited Sarah Davis, 39, of West Calla Road, Canfield, on a charge of driving 40 mph on a section of Herbert Road with a 25-mph speed limit.

April 27 Citation: Jeffery Hood of Mahoning Avenue, Diamond, received a speeding citation after police said Hood, 55, had driven 52 mph on a portion of Fairground Boulevard with a 35-mph speed limit.

April 29 Arrest: After stopping his car on Herbert Road, authorities charged Dennis Graves, 54, of Woodbine Avenue Southeast, Warren, with driving under suspension.

Arrest: A traffic stop on South Hillsdale Avenue resulted in a driving-undersuspension charge against Brian Scott, 31, of Beaver Falls, Pa.

Attempted fraud: Police received information that a fraudulent check had been received at Bernard-Daniels Lumber & Home, 250 Railroad St., evidently in an effort to defraud the business, though no money was lost and no charges were filed.

April 19 Attempted fraud: Someone reportedly tried to scam and defraud McDonald’s, 586 E. Main St., via money cards, though the fast-food restaurant lost no money.

No charges had been filed at the time of the report.

Citation: A 17-year-old Canfield girl was cited on a charge of failing to yield at a stop sign after a two-vehicle crash on North Broad Street.

Hilltop Elementary School kindergarten students had some special visitors as they celebrated Muffins With Mom on April 20. The students treated their mothers to a musical performance, with muffins for everyone afterwards in the cafeteria.

Under the direction of Stephanie Summers, Hilltop music teacher, the kindergartners started their program with the “Hilltop Elementary Song,” followed by “The Muffin Man.” They continued their program with “Skinnamarinky Dinky Dink,” “Down By The Bay” and “A-Ram-Sam-Sam.” In between songs, the mothers were shown videos of the students, by class, answering the question “I love my mom because…” The kindergartners gave such answers as she takes care of me, she hugs me, she gives me toys, she makes me ravioli, she lets me eat cookies, she cleans up my messes, she reads me bedtime stories, she keeps me safe and she does everything for me.

Before wrapping up the performance, Summers thanked the moms for coming.

“Before we sing our last song, I would like to thank you for coming today. We hope you enjoyed our show,” Summers said.

CHS students introduced to fitness activities

From yoga to cross fit, and from kickboxing to Zumba, physical education students at Canfield High School have spent the past few weeks with several guest instructors.

The physical education students had the opportunity to learn about two different physical activities the week of April 16.

On April 17, students learned the fundamentals of ATA Martial Arts and kickboxing from Nick Vital of ATA Karate. On April 18, students learned Zumba from Kelly Scurich, CHS choir teacher and Zumba instructor.

Scurich addressed the students before she began the class.

“Zumba uses mostly Latin

music so I am going to teach you some Latin steps. Don’t let it scare you if you don’t know what’s going on right away,” Scurich told the students.

Scurich began with a warm up and as she moved onto dances, she explained the moves of the dance to the students. She started with the Merengue and moved into the Salsa. Scurich then taught the students the Reggaeton two-step and then the percussion box step.

“This one is a lot of fun,” Scurich said.

One of the goals of a physical

education class is to promote a lifelong lifestyle that includes exercise.

Kristen Gennaro, CHS physical education teacher, said she wants her students to learn lifelong exercise habits.

“I want all my students to have a healthy lifestyle and that includes exercise. We promote lifelong fitness and I want my students to know there are a lot of different ways to achieve fitness. You don’t have to run on the treadmill or use the elliptical to be fit. While these are great, there are other fitness activities everyone can participate it to keep fit. These activities, such as cross fit and Zumba, can get you out of your comfort zone and inspire you to try new things to be fit,” Gennaro said.

Charles and Betty Dysert of Canfield were named 2018 AARP Volunteer of the Year.

Shirley Griffin, president of Canfield AARP Chapter 3104, presented the Dyserts with their honor at the chapter’s monthly meeting on April 9.

“April is Volunteer Appreciation month, and it is my honor to recognize Charles and Betty Dysert as the 2018 AARP Volunteer of the Year. Some of the Chuck and Betty’s volunteering includes helping hand out food at Operation Blessing the third Thursday of each month. Betty also has handled the Operation Blessing registration for 10 years and they help approximately 150 people a month. They have also helped with Canfield’s blood drive since 1985. Betty also provides refreshments for the blood drive. Of all the charitable functions in Canfield, Chuck and Betty seem to have their fingers in them one way or another,” Griffin said.

Steven Armour and Amy Dravecky, both of Cuyahoga Falls, exchanged marriage vows July 15, 2017, at St. Christine Church. The ceremony was solemnized by the Rev. John Keehner.

Concelebrants were the Revs. Zachary Coulter and J. James Korda. A reception followed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica.

The parents of the bride are Joseph and Gina Dravecky of Austintown.

The groom is a son of Andra Armour of Olmsted Falls and William Amour of Parma.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and reside in Cuyahoga Falls.

The bride wore a soft white A-line gown with embroidered lace, handbeaded accents, a curved neckline, cap sleeves and a scalloped chapel-length train. The ensemble was completed by an elbow-length veil edged in lace appliques.

Alyssa Medvec was maid of honor.

The bridesmaids, wearing Wedgewood blue dresses, were Emma Taffe, Jeannette Iskander and Margarita Lider.

The flower girl was Amelia Johns, niece of the groom.

Dean Rowinski served as best man, and groomsmen were Deacon Rich Samide, Audie Smith and Brook Roveri.
