Carnival of Fun teaches students economics By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Stadium Drive Elementary students transformed a classroom into a carnival to learn more about finance and economics. This is the second year the Carnival of Fun was created by the second-grade students, who are currently being taught a lesson in economics in their classrooms. Second-grade teachers Jessica Koehler, Brittany Krestel and Debbie Seifert organized the event, but the second-graders ran the carnival and the different booths by themselves. “We try to make it completely student-centered. We try not to help them, we talk about this is their job and they earn an income,” said Koehler. Students who attend the carnival are asked to bring in a canned good to donate. Everyone who attends gets four free tickets and two more tickets for every canned item brought Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci in. The second-grade students Second-grade students worked the Crazy for Candy booth at the student-run carnival at Stadium Drive Elementary who work the ticket table tally on April 4-7. the number of cans each grade brings in to total them at the end of the carnival. Last year, the students raised more than 1,500 pounds of food to donate the Second Harvest Food Bank and this year they hope to raise more. It gives the students an opportunity to learn and volunteer to raise goods for people who are in need. “One of our words is volunteering. We taught the kids that we can volunteer by raising canned goods for the poor,” said Koehler. “I love the carnival, my favorite part is that we are raising food for Second Harvest,” said second-grader Isabella Witt who helped run the petting zoo. The entire student body is invited, along with parents, to come to the carnival. Each of the visiting classes gets a half hour to explore the different stands. The students learned different vocabulary words revolving around economics and business. They use those words while they work the different stands to try and bring guests to their booths. “I liked doing the carnival, I learned a lot about economics,” said second-grader Ava Flescher who helped with the petting zoo.

Kiwanis Club hosts annual Easter Egg Hunt By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman Kiwanis Club hosted its 67th annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 5 at Boardman Park for kindergarten students at the Boardman elementary schools. Boardman High School Key Club students helped with the egg hunt and the BHS home eco-
nomics class stuffed more than 1,200 plastic eggs with pieces of candy. The egg hunt took place in two different sessions to allow all four elementary schools to attend. Kindergarten students from Robinwood Lane Elementar y, Stadium Drive Elementary, Market Street Elementary and West Boulevard Elementary spent time hunting for candy-filled plastic eggs.

Candy Co. and a drink. The students are also given a coupon from Chick Fil A for a free treat. “It’s really fun with the all kids because they are just so excited, said Linh Tran, a senior Key Club student. Tran helped out with the egg hunt last year along with other Key Club members. She enjoys volunteering because she gets to spend time with her classmates
“In the early years, they used to hard-boil the eggs if you can imagine that, said George Basista, Kiwanis Club member who organized the event. Now that plastic eggs are used, the students get a special candy treat inside that the BHS students help put together. After the students collect their eggs, they go to the pavilion to enjoy a chocolate bunny from Giannos

The students and staff of Boardman Glenwood Junior High recently participated in a fundraiser to support the American Heart Association. Students donated $1 to wear sweatpants to school on April 7 and purchased t-shirts provided by the American Heart Association to show their support. Students had the opportunity to participate in a four on four basketball tournament and a 3-point competition. The school champion from that tournament competed against staff members in a student/staff basketball game on April 7. Patrick Hubert, the winner of the 3-point competition, got to choose two staff members to pie in the face. He chose Principal Bart Smith and science teacher Scott Lenhart. Overall, the students and staff contributed more than $1,300 to the American Heart Association. Pictured is Principal Bart Smith.

SPORTS Boys track victorious over Howland and Champion briefs
Neighbors wants spring sports news Summer athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

Area fitness expo promotes health and wellness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Local businesses and vendors gathered on April 17 at the Austintow n Holly wood Gaming Racino to prepare for the upcoming Youngstow n Fitness Expo at the racino on May 13. Representatives from different health and wellness organizations brought their products that they would have on display for the expo. This year is the first year that KitchenAbz has hosted a fitness expo and they’re hoping that they will have a good turnout allowing the expo to continue for the upcoming years. The event was created to offer the community a wellrounded view of what different products and services the area has to offer. The vendors who are attending range from self defense products, personal training, health and wellness classes and more. There will be more than 50 vendors who include Barre Youngstow n, Lori McDonald a Damsel in Defense representative, members of Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Jasen Pekalla who is a martial arts instructor and studio owner, personal trainers Colby
Jacobs and Joel Younkins, Janine Goddard who makes headbands plus several others. “I think it’s a great thing because there’s a lot of people who don’t know about all these different programs that are offered in our area and this w ill help get the word out,” said Kim Miller, a Barre Youngstown instructor. The event will run from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and every half hour there will be free educational sessions. The event is open to people of all ages and there will be demonstrations for children and adults. Guests who attend the event will get special pricing on equipment and membership deals. “I think it’s good for the community and giving awareness. A lot of people have questions about their health and how to get healthy and fit. They come here and get some of those questions answered,” said Jacobs. There will be vendor giveaways and raffles throughout the day. Lynn Mickey and Tom K itchen A BZ from K itchenABZ are eager to see how the event turns out and are looking forward to bringing health and wellness awareness to the community.
