Local student travels world at sea By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Canfield resident Alexandria Zoldan is currently on a ship exploring the world while participating in a three and a half month Semester at Sea program. Not only is the program beneficial to helping Zoldan earn her degree at The Ohio State University, but it has provided Zoldan the opportunity to meet Desmond and Leah Tutu. Desmon is a human rights activist and Nobel Prize winner from South Africa. His wife, Leah, was a teacher when they met, but now she is a provider for her family and one of the founders of the South African Domestic Workers Association. The Tutu’s work hard to help defend the rights of people throughout the world. The students in the Semester at Sea program were asked to write an essay answering the question “Why do you want to meet the Archbishop Desmond Tuto?” Faculty chose the candidates that would represent Semester at Sea and get the opportunity to attend a reception and meet with the Archbishop and his wife. Zoldan’s essay focused on how she was astounded with his continuous positive and forgiving outlook on life. “My thoughts were of pure joy and excitement, with my only worry being what I was going to ask or talk to the Archbishop and his wife about in order to take full advantage of such a unique and once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Zoldan. Zoldan said her meeting with the Archbishop and his wife was everything she imagined and more. Desmond told Zoldan, “The best investment for human kind is young people like you.” The Semester at Sea program and the people Zoldan has met have reiterated to her what is important in life. She said there is nothing like it in the whole world and she would recommend the program to anyone and everyone who is interested. “I cannot even begin to explain how the Semester at Sea and the meeting with the Tutu’s has benefited me. Traveling the world and meeting all different kinds of people who have come from completely different paths of life than I, has allowed for me to grow and become a more open-minded, understanding and grateful person,” said Zoldan. Anyone who is interested in Zoldan’s experience with Semester at Sea can visit her blog at amzoldan.wixsite.com/website which will be fully updated on April 19 and 20, visit her Instagram under the username lexizoldan or send her an e-mail at Alexandra.zoldan. sp17@semesteratsea.org.

Elementary students experience high school By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from local Catholic and public schools had the opportunity to explore Cardinal Mooney High School on March 31. Ca rd i na l Moone y H ig h School students had the day off school, but several of them volunteered their time off to help out with the fifth- and sixthgrade students. The fifth- and sixth-grade students took four classes throughout their time there to discover what Mooney has to offer. “I’ve had a lot of fun,” said tenth-grade Mooney student Alexis Santor. “It really opens up their minds to their options when they’re older to different kinds of friend groups and what they want to get into.” The four-hour event gave the Mooney students an opportunity to show the younger students what Mooney is like. It also gave students from different schools

an opportunity to meet each other and make new friends. All of the students took a science class, a drama class and an art class. Students had the opportunity to choose from a variety of classes like athletics, computers, foreign language and more to take as an elective. At the end of the day all of the students participated in an exciting Mooney Olympics Competition where the winning schools were awarded with a plaque. Many students, elementary and high school, agreed the Olympics was the best part of the day. “I thought they had a lot of good things to do to help us learn,” said St. Charles fifthgrader Katie Frommelt. “They showed us how to do things by yourself so you’re prepared.” Frommelt said she enjoyed the Olympics the most because she likes to do active things. She is looking forward to coming to Mooney when she gets to high school. “It’s a nice community-build-

CHS athletes take part in CHC Read-a-Thon By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Celebrate Mom!

C.H. Campbell Elementary School students welcomed some very special visitors the morning of March 20. As part of the school’s annual Reada-Thon, Canfield High School student-athletes visited the school to read to the elementary students in their classrooms and discuss the importance of reading and maintaining good grades in order to participate in and succeed in sports. More than 30 high school athletes from a variety of sports volunteered to participate in the event. This year, Jackie Graham, coordinator of the event, preselected digital books which were appropriate for each grade level. “I selected sports-themed books for the high school student-athletes to read to the elementary students. The books were appropriate for each grade level and each had a message for the kids, such as never give up, everyone can contribute something to the team and always try your best. The high school students also spoke to the students about what it takes to be a successful student-athlete and

how important it is to maintain their grades and play sports at the same time, Graham said. Canfield High School sophomore football player, basketball player and track team member Colin Hritz and senior varsity basketball cheerleader Katie Gamble read to Heather Bruno’s first-grade class. Hritz read “Franklin Plays the Game to the students and then discussed the book with them. As Hritz read the book, the students were able to follow along and view the pictures on a screen at the front of the room. “The friendships you form with your teammates is pretty special, just like Franklin said in the book. It’s also important to never give up and work as a team, Hritz said. Bruno also chimed in to tell the students the most important thing is to have fun. “The most important thing when playing sports is to have fun and being there with your friends. You become even better friends on a team and even make new friends. Friendship is very special, Bruno said. Gamble read “Hooray for Fly Guy to the first-grade students, and when she was done

and whatever you do. In high school, the books get bigger and sometimes you have to write reports on them. If you start reading now and all through elementary and middle school, you will be prepared for high school, Gamble said.

Families spend night with Easter Bunny By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children and their families hopped to Boardman Park to spend an evening together with the Easter Bunny. The two-night event started in 2013 and is an annual tradition for some families. Dinner with the Easter Bunny was hosted on April 5 and 6 with both of the nights sold out. “It’s a great holiday, fun event for families to enjoy taking a picture with the Easter Bunny, doing some crafts, having dinner and they get to watch ‘Peter Cottontail,’” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park recreation director. Families enjoyed a dinner of chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, fishsticks, vegetables, bread and butter, applesauce, dessert and of course carrots. “Peter Cottontail” played on the screen for the families to watch as they ate their dinner. The Easter Bunny was available for pictures and the guests who took a picture with the bunny were able to take home a hard copy at the end of the night. One of the favorite parts of the night was the bunny, Oreo, who was brought in by a 4-H

crafts the children could make. The children colored bunny ears, made a foam bunny and plenty of others that they could take home with them. The next Boardman Park event with be the Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion show on May 7.
