Fellows to host Mother’s Day brunch There will be a Mother’s Day brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens on May 14. There will be two seatings, one at noon and another at 3 p.m. The menu will include fresh fruit, tossed salad, sweet rolls and Kravitz bagels, a made-to-order omlette bar, applewood smoked bacon, a carving station with turkey breast and certified Angus prime rib, haddock Francaise, chicken marsala, chicken tenders, stuffed cabbage, steamed green beans, macaroni and cheese, tortellini in vodka sauce and desserts of assorted pies, brownies and cheesecakes. The cost is $28 for adults after tax and gratuity, $14 for children ages 12-5 after tax and gratuity and free for children ages 4 and younger. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Kravitz Garden Cafe at 330-779-8201.

Local church hosts festival June 14-18 Saint Nicholas Church, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers, is having its 44th annual festival on June 1418. Admission price is $2, and children who are ages 12 and under are free. June 14 from 6-10 p.m. will be Children’s Night with discounted ride tickets, Joko the Clown (from 6:30-8:30 p.m.) and pony rides all week. There will also be a new Father’s Day Par-

ish Raffle, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction all week. On June 15, the festival will run from 6-11 p.m. and will feature the Del Sinchak Polka Band from 6-10 p.m. On June 16, the festival will run from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. and Guys Without Ties will perform at 7 p.m. On June 17 (6 p.m. until 12 a.m.), Haymaker - the Rock Band will perform at 7 p.m. On June 18 (6-11 p.m.), will feature the Power of Praise band from 6-10 p.m. The event will feature homemade food, games, rides and more. The festival is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #4471. Entrances to festival include Creed Street between the school and the hall, and Wilson Street between the church and Tiny Tots. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the oneday sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables. The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Knitting guild to meet The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet May 9 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. Jen Kendall will present a program on Knitted Edgings. Fifth- and sixth-grade students from local Catholic and public schools had the opportunity to explore Cardinal Mooney High School on March 31. Cardinal Mooney High School students had the day off school, but several of them volunteered their time off to help out with the fifth- and sixth-grade students. The fifth- and sixth-grade students took four classes throughout their time there to discover what Mooney has to offer. “I’ve had a lot of fun,” said tenth-grade Mooney student Alexis Santor. “It really opens up their minds to their options when they’re older to different kinds of friend groups and what they want to get into.” The four-hour event gave the Mooney students an opportunity to show the younger students what Mooney is like. It also gave students from different schools an opportunity to meet each other and make new friends. All of the students took a science class, a drama class and an art class. Students had the opportunity to choose from a variety of classes like athletics, computers, foreign language and

more to take as an elective. At the end of the day all of the students participated in an exciting Mooney Olympics Competition where the winning schools were awarded with a plaque. Many students, elementary and high school, agreed the Olympics was

the best part of the day. “I thought they had a lot of good things to do to help us learn,” said St. Charles fifth-grader Katie Frommelt. “They showed us how to do things by yourself so you’re prepared.” Frommelt said she enjoyed

Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Reservations are being taken for the “Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy” fundraising event being hosted by the Literary Society of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC). The event begins at 6 p.m. on May 11 at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road. Attendees are asked to wear their favorite little black dress and bring a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with others at the event. Guests can also donate gently used and brand new children’s books. There will be an informal fashion show and the following boutiques will be selling accessories: E.J. Hannah, Suzanne’s, and Ivory & Birch. Tickets are still available for the event at $40 each, which includes heavy appetizers and one glass of wine. There will be a cash bar. Poland Village Gardener Carol Cox and her granddaughter, Brianna, recently located the paver for their family while enjoying the Centennial Garden in Poland township. The Centennial Garden and pergola behind Poland Village Hall has been an ongoing community project of the Poland Village Gardeners. The members of this garden club are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the major renovation of the gardens, which are open to the public to enjoy. The garden and pergola serve as favorite photo spots for weddings, graduations and special occasions. The Poland Village Gardeners donate their time and labor to keep the gardens looking beautiful. The fund for upkeep and plantings depends upon their fundraising sale of pavers which form the floor of the pergola. Each paver is personalized based on the donor’s request and can honor family, friends, special occasions and memorials. The Inn and Poland Way residents and staff members gathered in the Great Room on April 7 for the blessing of the Inn. Monsignor William J. Connell of Holy Family Parish in Poland was joined by Bob Renninger, member of Holy Family Parish, to bless the entrance, the Great Room, the residents and Cooper, the dog. Before the blessing, Msgr. Connell led the group in prayer.

“It’s wonderf ul. I belong to Holy Family and I just love Msgr. Connell, he’s wonderful,” said resident Jenny Armeni. Ed Reese, CEO of EDM Management Inc., and Diane Reese, President of EDM, own the Inn at Poland Way and have been grateful for how well the facility has been running since it opened in winter of 2016. They were honored to have Msgr. Connell bless the building, especially because Ed Reese was in Msgr. Connell’s first religion class at Cardinal Mooney High

School. “I’m here to bless the building, but more importantly to bless you, the residents that are here. And to thank Mr. Reese for this wonderful facility in our Poland community,” Msgr. Connell told the guests at the blessing. After Msgr. Connell read a prayer, he and Renninger went to different areas of the Inn to bless them. Local businesses and vendors gathered on April 17 at the Austintown Holly wood Gaming Racino to prepare for the upcoming Youngstown Fitness Expo at the racino on May 13. Representatives from different health and wellness organizations brought their products that they would have on display for the expo. This year is the first year that KitchenAbz has hosted a fitness expo and they’re hoping that they will have a good turnout al-

lowing the expo to continue for the upcoming years. The event was created to offer the community a well-rounded view of what different products and services the area has to offer. The vendors who are attending range from self defense products, personal training, health and wellness classes and more. There will be more than 50 vendors who include Barre Youngstown, Lori McDonald a Damsel in Defense representative, members of Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Jasen Pekalla who is a martial arts instructor and studio owner, personal trainers Colby Jacobs and Joel

Younkins, Janine Goddard who makes headbands plus several others. “I think it’s a great thing because there’s a lot of people who don’t know about all these different programs that are offered in our area and this will help get the word out,” said Kim Miller, a Barre Youngstown instructor. The event will run from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and every half hour there will be free educational sessions. The event is open to people of all ages and there will be demonstrations for children and adults. Guests who attend the event will get

special pricing on equipment and membership deals. “I think it’s good for the community and giving awareness. A lot of people have questions about their health and how to get healthy and fit. They come here and get some of those questions answered,” said Jacobs. There will be vendor giveaways and raffles throughout the day.
