Stadium students celebrate Autism Awareness By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

St ad iu m Dr ive E lementary School celebrated Autism Awareness Day on April 8. The Stadium Drive Special Needs Community of the PTA organized an Autism Awareness Day to help the students and faculty learn more about Autism. Autism Awareness Day is celebrated around the world on April 2, but because the students were on break, they celebrated on April 8. The theme of day was “We all might be different, but we all fit together at Stadium Drive.” “Making the kids aware of Autism is our main goal,” said Melissa Ludban, one of the PTA members who helped organize the event. Many of the students donated a dollar to wear blue in support of Autism. Some students and faculty wore a “Light Up Blue” t-shirts that they purchased and the PTA ordered. The after school program also made puzzle piece pins for the students to wear. The money raised from the

students who wore blue and those who purchased a shirt will be given to the Rich Center for Autism and sensory materials for all of the students at Stadium Drive. “Each classroom did their puzzle pieces, it fits our theme of we’re all different, but we

all fit together,” said Michelle Rudge, the PTA member who put the event together. The students were excited to learn about something that has become so common. Many of the children know someone with Autism and having an awareness day helped them

learn things they might not have known before. The PTA is putting on a seminar that is about learning techniques to help children learn on April 21. The seminar is free for anyone who wants to attend and Boardman teachers receive credits if they attend.

Boardman residents know John Landers as their School Boa rd member since 2010. What they may not realize is besides serving the educational needs of Boardman students, he will soon sit on a national panel that considers the current and future information technology issues that affect higher education. Landers is the manager of the ITS Project Management Office at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He was selected among his peers to serve on the EDUCAUSE IT Issues Panel during 2016. The panel is comprised of chief information officers, senior IT and library leaders and faculty members from across the United States. Panel members are responsible for meeting quarterly to identify and discuss the issues they believe currently impact

or will impact higher-education IT practice. Then, they must agree on which seem most important. The resulting list is transformed into the annual EDUCAUSE Top Ten IT Issues List. “The Top Ten IT Issues List has become a trusted source of information for decision-makers and strategists,” Landers said. “I look forward to representing Case Western Reserve in this forum and working with my colleagues from other institutions to shape the list.” Landers joined Case Western in June of 2009, and was elected to Boardman’s Board of Education in November of the same year. “John’s a Boardman alumni, who is committed to the educational excellence of his alma mater,” said Boardman Superintendent Frank Lazzeri. “This

Adult and baby animals were out for guests to visit during the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm Annual Animal Baby Shower on April 10.

Small animals bring in large crowd By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted its 24th annual Farm Animal Baby Shower on April 10. The farm was open to the public for people to come visit the three barns containing the baby farm animals. Several people attended and had the opportunity to interact with the animals. There were rabbits, horses, goats, pigs, chickens and more, some of them still awaiting the bird of their babies. Some of the animals at the farm are part of the Barnyard Buddies program. Barnyard Buddies is a program in which a

MetroParks staff member visits different schools and brings animals for the students to learn about and pet. Volunteers and other staff members of the MetroParks Farm were available for any questions people may have had. They watched over the animals and allowed people to hold or pet them if they wished. After visiting with the animals, cake and punch were available for the guests to enjoy. The baby shower celebration represents the opening of the farms. It is an event to let people know they are open for the season and are always welcoming visitors.

Middle school orchestra performs for fellow classmates

By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The orchestra consisting of students from Boardman Glenwood Middle School and Boa rd ma n Center Midd le School put on a performance for Boa rdma n elementa r y school students at the Boardman Performing Arts Center on April 8. Kindergarten through second-graders from the Boardman elementary schools took

a mini field trip to the Boardman Performing Arts Center to listen to a concert put on by the middle schools’ orchestra. The orchestra performed several songs from different music eras. A student came up to the microphone prior to the performance of each song and gave a brief introduction of the song. The students were encouraged to sing along with the song “Shut Up and Dance with Me,” by Walk the Moon as the orchestra played. Many of the

students got into the groove of things and danced as well as sang along. When the sing-along ended, the orchestra performed a melody of Elvis Presley songs. The orchestra was able to make a smooth transition from one song to the next w ithout a pause. The elementary school students had the opportunity to enjoy a morning full of music while spending time with their friends and classmates.
