STEM Night brings out of this world family fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Middle School hosted it’s first annual Family STEM Night on April 12. A STEM Club at Poland Middle School was created this year by teacher, Jill Marconi, for the fifth- through eighth-grade students. STEM Club met throughout the year to prepare a night full of fun by creating cardboard
arcade games and other activities for the guests. Students in fourth- through sixth-grade were invited to the STEM Night. The theme for the night was Star Wars and it encouraged the guests to “use the force” to learn about science, technology, engineering and math. “We wanted to have a night for families to see the kinds of things we are doing,” said Mar-

coni. More than 100 students registered for STEM Night and brought their families with them. The guests spent the evening playing the arcade games the STEM students built and could also make their own lightsabers out of pool noodles, build a Jedi Tower and race a boat in the Naboo Canal. The students attending had fun learning problem solving,
explore gravity, buoyancy and symmetry. There were several games that the children could play. There were versions of Whack-a-Mole, Skee Ball, basketball and more. “We want them to see the world needs makers and creators. We want the kids to be inspired young, so they can be a part of all that especially when they graduate and be exposed to it,” said Marconi.

Mill Creek MetroParks Farm hosted its 24th annual Farm Animal Baby Shower on April 10. The farm was open to the public for people to come visit the three barns containing the baby farm animals. Several people attended and had the opportunity to interact with the animals. There were rab-
bits, horses, goats, pigs, chickens and more, some of them still awaiting the bird of their babies. Some of the animals at the farm are part of the Barnyard Buddies program. Barnyard Buddies is a program in which a MetroParks staff member visits different schools and brings animals for the students to learn about and pet. Volunteers and other staff members of the MetroParks
Farm were available for any questions people may have had. They watched over the animals and allowed people to hold or pet them if they wished. After visiting with the animals, cake and punch were available for the guests to enjoy. The baby shower celebration represents the opening of the farms. It is an event to let people know they are open for the season and are always welcoming visitors.

Students say yes to alternatives of drugs and alcohol By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ca rd i na l Moone y H ig h School celebrated its third annual YES Fest on April 14. The YES Fest welcomes a keynote speaker every year to talk to the students and this year it was Youngstown native, Maurice Clarett. Clarett started off his speech talking about his life and what it was like growing up. He spoke about how he got into trouble various times throughout his life, but has recovered and is trying to show how people can overcome their pasts. YES Fest is used as a tactic to communicate to the students to say yes to alternatives of drugs and alcohol. The speak-
ers who attend are usually people who have went through addiction and can tell the students what it is like or counselors who work with people suffering from addiction. “We have it separated into two groups, seniors and juniors, then freshman and sophomores. We felt it was more effective to break up the audience and get a more personal message,” said Mark Vollmer, principal at Mooney. After hearing the Clarett’s presentation, the students went to the gymnasium to explore the different organizations that had tables set up. Several organizations and agencies from the community brought information and a representative was available for the students to
talk to about different activities they can participate in. There were tutoring opportunities, chances to volunteer and other programs to keep them occupied and away from drugs and drinking. “We have about 30 different community agencies where students can have volunteer opportunities, things they can sign up for outside of the school to keep themselves occupied where they’re not focused on those negative things,” said Vollmer. YES Fest, which was originally started at Boardman High School, was adapted by Cardinal Mooney. With the success of the YES Fest at Mooney, it is something that the school is looking to continue doing for the students.
