Local church hosts breakfast event There will be a free pancake, sausage and egg breakfast on May 12 from 9-11 a.m. at the Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown. Donations are accepted, and proceeds will go toward world service projects.

Austintown bands announce spring concert series The Austintown School’s instrumental music department recently announced the spring concert schedule for the final concerts of the 2017-2018 school year and invites the public to attend these concerts. On May 16, the school will host the spring jazz festival at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The concert series will conclude with the May 21 and 22 presentations by the Austintown Intermediate and Austintown Middle School bands. Jeremy McClaine and Jackie Mortimer will conduct the 120 member AIS fifth-grade band on May 21, along with the AMS sixth-grade band. The theme of the concert will be “Places around the World.” The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fitch High School auditorium. On the following night, May 22, McClaine will conduct the AMS seventh-grade band at 7 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade band. The theme of that concert will be “Adventures of the Land, Sky and Sea.”

On May 28 at 10 a.m., the AMS eighthgrade band members will join the high school marching band under the direction of Wesley O’Connor and McClaine for the Austintown Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Service. The parade begins on Idaho Road at Marc’s and ends at the high school Veteran’s Memorial in front of Fitch High School.

Tickets for all concerts are available at the auditorium the night of each concert and are $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens, veterans and students.

Proceeds from the concerts are used to support the more than 460 members of the Austintown instrumental music programs and fund the annual senior scholarships. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children.

Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. If you have any questions about the program, contact Alexis Weber, RDN, LD, Food Service Director, at 330-797-3900 at ext. 2032 for more information.

Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road in Austintown, will host Supper at the Corner on May 17 from 4:30-6 p.m.

This supper is free as a community outreach program that the church offers, open to all, every month. Donations are accepted to continue this program.

Basket raffle event to benefit two dog rescues Legacy Dog Rescue and Never Muzzled are hosting a basket raffle event on May 19 at The Federal, located at 110 W Federal St. in Youngstown. The event will be from 12-6 p.m. with baskets drawn at 6 p.m. One hundred baskets and/or gift cards will be raffled off. The winners drawn at 6 p.m. and need not be present. Austintown Fitch High School served senior citizens of the community at their spring Senior Dinner on April 25. School representatives and students gave the seniors food and drinks during the event. Pictured, middle school assistant principal Dominick Daltorio and the high school’s junior principal Jim Penk passed out salads during the event.

Representatives of Fitch High School served senior citizens during their second Senior Dinner of the year on April 25.

The school has a dinner for the senior residents in the fall

and spring each year. The event featured performances by different groups in the school in addition to the dinner.

“It’s a great tradition to bring in the community,” said Vincent Colaluca, superintendent of the school district. He said the

night gave the school a chance to showcase the great talents of the students.

The seniors paid $2 for lasagna, rolls, a salad and a drink.

Those helping at the event included Colaluca, principals Chris Berni, Jim Penk and Jeff

Representatives from Austintown schools served senior citizens lasagna, rolls and salad for dinner. The National Honors Society students helped at the event, earning them a credit.

Swavel and students from National Honor Society. David Ritchie, the longest-serving board member in Ohio, also served food.

The school had singing from the show choir, songs from the band and a presentation from a member of the school’s speech and debate team. The performances both showcase students’ talents and entertain the seniors of the community.

Johnna Blystone, the speech and debate student who spoke at the event, said she wanted to present at the event because it gives visibility to the speech and debate team and she loves entertaining a crowd. Blystone presented her speech on suppression, which she will present at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in June.

Colaluca said the school always tries to bring in outside organizations that relate with helping the senior citizens in the community. For this event, they invited Family First Adult Day Services.

They wanted to take a proactive role in helping seniors prolong the length of time they can stay at home without needing a senior living center. They offer activities and socialization to the seniors.

Smith, Vlosich and her group also helped out in serving the dinner to the seniors. The event is one of many community events that Fitch has at the school throughout the year.

Liptak provides monthly updates on the activities offered by the Youngstown library. The Austintown Friends of the Library meet on the fourth Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in the large meeting room.

AESCU employees contributed to the Rescue Mission Neighbors | Submitted

Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU) employees participated in the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley’s Cleveland Indian’s home opener dress down day. The employees raised $453 through their own contributions and donations from credit union members. Associated School Employees Credit Union President/CEO Michael J. Kurish was so impressed with the efforts of his staff, he offered a 100 percent match of the donation to the Rescue Mission, increasing the total donation to $906. Kurish presented a check to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley’s CEO John Muckridge. Muckridge, in turn, presented ASECU with a plaque of appreciation. ASECU is a full-service financial institution serving the Mahoning Valley since 1959.

ASECU is open to the community and serves Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

Students face off against teachers in basketball game

Austintown Middle School hosted a basketball game between the students and staff members on April 12 in the gymnasium.

The school worked with the PTA to organize and run the event. They set up events between each quarter and had the concession stand open like any other basketball game. The funds raised during the event were split between the PTA and the school.

“It’s a fundraiser for the PTA and the school, but it’s really for the kids,” said principal Ben Baldner. He took over the head principal job at the middle school this school year after previously being at the high school. He said the students kept asking him about the game throughout the year, so he knew he had to continue the tradition.

The team of students included six boys and six girls from the seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams. The basketball coaches selected the players to be on the student team.

The schools’ cheerleaders cheered on their classmates during the event. After the first quarter, they did a dance routine.

The staff included STEM instructor Douglas Eisenbraun, eighth-grade math teacher Carlo Trafficante, seventh-grade math teacher Alexandra Cardarelli, principals Baldner and Dominic Daltorio, eighth-grade boys coach Daymien, eighth-grade girls coach Darris and freshman girls coach Balint. Student Evan Sahli coached the team.

The event began with team introductions and the singing of the National Anthem by student Elizabeth Jadue. Between the quarters, they had the cheerleaders do a dance routine, a tshirt launcher from the robotics team, a half-court shot chance

and a 50/50 raffle.

The game acted very much like their normal basketball game, complete with referees, in the form of girls from the freshman basketball team, a concessions stand, a program, a scoreboard and a loud students’ section. The program included the players, the agenda, organizers and fun facts about each of the players, such as Cardarelli’s blurb that read “thought this was a softball game.”

The staff team beat the students, but all of the players on both teams seemed to enjoy themselves. Baldner said the students enjoy the game a great deal.

Fitch opens new baseball field with a big win

The Austintown community celebrated the opening of the Richard L. Coppola Baseball Field on April 12 before Fitch’s game against Columbiana.

The event saw different school officials, board members and former coaches participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the field. The new field began construction on November 8, 2017. The field uses turf instead of grass, as many college programs do.

“It’s an elite program and, now with the new facility, it’s the best in the area,” said Richard Coppo-

la, former head coach and namesake of the field. He said the field is unbelievable.

The board members, coaches and school members lined up for a photo during their ribbon cutting to officially open the field.

Coppola and Walley Ford, another former coach, delivered the opening pitches for the game.

“It’s a great opportunity for the kids,” said Ford, “It’s a great complex, like a college facility.”

Coppola coached from 19681996 and helped set up the first season of the baseball program.

Ford, who played for Fitch under coach Coppola, served as head coach from 1999-2016. Current

head coach Joe Paris also played under Coppola.

SCG Fields and their partners Act Global broke ground on the project in November 2017 and created the turf field. Paris said that while the field is a dream come true to him as an Austintown community member and former player, the players are still adjusting to the turf. They only had about an hour and a half to practice on the new field prior to the game.

The lack of time on the turf did not seem to cause too many issues for the Cardinals, as they won the opening game on the field 16-4.

May monthly square dance announced The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles.

Strawberry 5K and Fun Run to benefit food bank On June 9, Molnar Farms is hosting an inaugural Strawberry 5K and Fun Run through the farm grounds, located at 3115 E. Western Reserve Road in Poland. Proceeds after expenses and all food donations will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

Wiand started the program the same way the librarians always do: singing “The More We Get Together.“ They then shook their bodies about during the song “Shake Your Sillies Out.“ Wiand had the children do “The Itsy Bitsy Spider“ while they waited for the next song, which asked them to do multiple different dances.

Wiand turned on the projector for a video of “Head, Shoulder, Knees and Toes.“ All the children did the instructions along with the video. After the song, they all sat for a story time video of “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons“ written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean.

After the video, they sang and danced to “The Grand Old Duke of York.“ Then, they moved along

with a body parts game which asked them to touch two of their body parts together, such as their elbow and knee. The game pushed the flexibility in the children, ending with the children touching their foot to their nose.

Wiand handed out different props for two songs. The children needed beanbags for “The Beanbag Rock“ where they moved their beanbags around in their hands. They also had strips of fabric for two scarf songs, where they twirled the fabric around.

They did another movement heavy song called “Jump, Jump“ where they jumped and spun around. After this, they sat down and sang “The Wheels on the Bus.“ Wiand ended the program with the popular children’s song “If You’re Happy and You Know It.“ Then, she placed a crawl tunnel on the ground for the children to go through and exit the room.
