Boardman among top 100 Ohio silver medal high schools Boardman is among the top 100 Ohio high schools according to the newest rankings from U.S. News and World Report. The Silver Medal Status considers college readiness, graduation rates, AP testing and proficiency scores, among other factors. At number 95, Boardman High School is the only Mahoning County High School in the “Top 100.” There are more than 600 public school districts in the State of Ohio. The rankings are based on students who perform better than expected in their state, as well as disadvantaged students who perform better than the state average. Weight is also given to student graduation rates that meet or exceed a national standard, and how well students are prepared for college level work.

The 28th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 28 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman.

Join Amy Bue, member of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization and the Ohio Bigfoot Organization,on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library as she speaks about her experience as an investigator and researcher into the eye-witnessed accounts of Bigfoot in Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage and Columbiana Counties. Bue has led and been a part of such notable investigations as the Olympic Project in Washington State where she assisted in the search for DNA evidence on the Olympic Peninsula. Bue has shared her experiences on radio and in online interviews. She has also been a speaker at various paranormal conferences and conventions. This event is for adults and teens.

Book folding Turn a book into a work of art simply by folding the pages at this event at the Boardman library on May 23 at 7 p.m. They will be creating a fleur-de-lis.

The school’s PTA organized the event to raise money to help fund their projects for the school and give the families a night to get together.

“It’s a fun night for the kids to get to hang out with their friends from school,” said Leslie Blevins, the president of the PTA. She and her volunteers made the night run smoothly.

Each student and parent got to make their own ice cream sundae.

In addition to the ice cream, the PTA had a DJ and a space for t he ch i ld ren to da nce, a basket raff le and a photo booth for families to take pictures together.

Boardman Glenwood Junior High School recently completed its annual seventh-grade chess tournament. Approximately 250 seventh-graders took part in the single elimination competition that took “gaming” back to the medieval world. The tournament is run by seventh-grade teachers Mr. Head, Mr. Basista and Mr. Cordon. The interest in the tournament has blossomed into a new chess club at Glenwood that meets twice per month, year round, and involves dozens of students.

May monthly square dance announced The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on May 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling the line dances. Boys track takes second at tri-meet at Falcon Stadium The Boardman boys track team improved its 2018 record to 10-1 and 7-1 in the AAC after finishing second at a tri-meet at Falcon Stadium on May 1.

Fitch was first with 88 points followed by the Spartans with 66 and then Canfield with 29.

The Spartans opened the meet with a second place finish in the 4x800 relay with the freshmen team of Frank Bero, Cristian Ortiz, Brennan Stratton and Jonah Bacho in a new BHS Freshman Record time of 8:50.25.

The next event, the 110-meter hurdles, sophomore Brian Yauger placed first. In the seated 100 freshman Micah Beckwith placed first in a career best time of 23.40. The 4x200 relay team of seniors Justice Jama and Billy Cammack, junior Josh Rodriguez, and sophomore Isaiah Suarez placed first.

In the 1600-meter run, Bero placed second and sophomore River Flatley was fourth.

In the field events, Cammack was fourth in the high jump and junior Nick Torres was fourth in the long jump.

Poma honored for lifetime achievement Neighbors | Submitted

Longtime Boardman School Board member Kim Poma was honored by the Boardman Civic Association with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 28th annual Academic Achievement Banquet on April 16. Poma served the Boardman Schools for 32 years, the first 16 as a PTA member and president, and then as a Board of Education member for the following 16 years, also serving time as President. She retired from the board in January. She has resided in Boardman since 1985, and she and her late husband, Jim, raised their two children in the community. Poma accepted the award, and it was evident her support of the schools and the community is far from over. She was very encouraging to the room full of graduating seniors, who were there to be honored for their academic achievements. The Boardman High School inducted new members at their National Honor Society ceremony on March 26 in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

The ceremony celebrated the student’s achievements inside and outside of the classroom, honoring both their commitment to school and the community. Many members of the organization surpassed the hours of community service needed to be in the NHS. Some had more than 100 hours of service and one reached more than 360 hours of service.

The school’s chamber orchestra played prior to the ceremony. William Amendol and Michele Prokop directed the band. Following their performance, principal Cindy Fernback welcomed the families to the school for the ceremony.

The ceremony featured keynote speaker Logan Gabbart, as well as spea kers for the candlelight ceremony and for each of the four pillars of the NHS. This included scholarship speaker Judy Garzanich, character speaker Kyle Kimerer, service speaker Alexandra Morar, leadership speaker Pra nav Pad ma nabha r a nd candlelight speaker Miranda Canacci.

Girl Scouts from Boardman and Poland troops celebrated World Thinking Day on Feb. 23 in the gym at Poland United Methodist Church. World Thinking Day is a global celebration encouraging girls to think of each other and show appreciation for the international Scouting movement. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) chooses an annual theme, and attendees honored the 2018 theme of “Make an Impact” with donations to the Poland Interfaith Food Pantry. Boardman jazz bands perform with famous trumpeter

Boardman’s four jazz ensembles played with a special guest at the 18th annual “BHS Jazz Fest” on March 27 in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

The concert included Boardman’s eighth-grade jazz band and the high school’s jazz 1, 2 and 3 bands. Director Thomas Ruggieri inv ited acclaimed trumpeter Roger Ingram to perform at times with the high school bands.

The program for the event included the songs to be performed, a history of Ingram and future jazz performances.

Ingram has toured and recorded with artists such as Ray Charles, Louis Bellson and Quincy Jones. He has recorded 19 albums with Harry Connick Jr. and performed in more than 20 Broadway productions. He is a complete musician but is most wellknown for his ability to hit high notes.

Ruggieri and the jazz band played with the Buddy Rich Big Band at Powers Auditorium a couple years ago. Ingram had been touring with the big band at the time. Ruggieri, impressed by Ingram’s performance, invited him to be the guest performer for their jazz festival.

The performance began with the eighth grade jazz band at 6:30 p.m. They performed Joe Zawinul’s “Baby That’s What I

Need (Walk Tall)” and Jimmy Forrest’s “Night Train.” The group only meets once a week to practice.

The jazz ensemble 3 took the stage at 7 p.m. with the opening tune of “Perdido” by Juan Tizol. Ingram joined the high school students for Jeff Taylor’s “T.J.’s Boogie” and the Tom Kubis arrangement of music from Disney’s animated movie “Beauty and the Beast” written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.

Ingram played with each of the high school jazz ensembles.

The jazz ensemble 2 began their set w ith “Canta loupe Island” by Herbie Hancock.

They added vocals to their performance for “One Bad Stud,” a song by The Blasters from the movie “Streets of Fire.”

Then, they played “Nardis”

by Miles Davis and “Sack of Woe” by Julian Adderley. They closed their performance with Oscar Pettiford’s “Blues in the Closet.”

The ja zz ensemble 1 f inished out the concert. Their set began with music from the film “Whiplash” arranged by Erik Morales and originally scored by Hank Levy. They followed the song up with Wayne Shorter’s “One by One.” In t heir set, t hey played jazz standards “On the Sunny Side of the Street“ by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields and “Autumn in New York“ by Vernon Duke, as well as Oliver Nelson’s “Hoe-Down“ and

Tom Garland’s “Then One Day I Had the Blues.”

They also played a jazz rendition of Gabriel Faure’s classical piece “Pavane” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The finished their set with

“How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” from the film “Best Friends” and “Oleo” by Sonny Rollins.

The bands’ future events include the Boardman Relay For Life, their spring jazz con-

cert and the 2k18 Rock Show at Boardman Park at the end of the year. The ensemble will cont inue into t he summer with a series of concerts, including one at Boardman Park on June 21.

Graduate Assistant Office of Institutional Advancement The role of the Graduate Assistant in the Office of Institutional Advancement includes management of Westminster College’s state charity registration compliance program, as well as, management of the dayto-day operations for the Office’s interactive student fundraising programs. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or

relate field. Ability to conceptualize, write and edit, accurate and concise content for prospective students and their families. Knowledge of AP Style is preferred. Knowledge of how to contact sources, conduct interviews and manage stakeholder expectations. Familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign. Experience as a photographer and/or videographer is a plus, but not required. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to work under pressure with tight deadlines and/or changing circumstances.
