May meeting to have time change and location change The Poland Historical Society will meet on May 15. The location for the May meeting has been changed to the Poland Township Park, located at 7400 Moore Road in Lowellville (Poland Township) in the pavilion near the playground. The park is located on Moore Road, which runs between Cowden Road and Miller Road. The business meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the program about the history of the township park will begin at 6 p.m. The earlier time will allow additional daylight time to view the park.

Guest speakers are Mike Heher and Ken Filicky. They will talk about the development of the park, present activities offered at the park and future plans to continue the growth of the park. A rainy day backup plan is to host the meeting and program at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection). Dinner and dance event to be May 19 The Assembly 731 of the NSS (Na-

tional Slovak Society) is sponsoring a dinner-dance on May 19 from 5-9 p.m. at the Lowellville Rod & Gun Club, located at 6225 Quarry Road in Lowellville. This is a very casual event for children and adults with an Old Western theme. The cost for non-members is $5 (pre-purchase) or $8 at the door.

Poland Lions host Treasures of the Trunk The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s Stadium Parking Lot at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sake items are welcome. There are 50 spaces available. The cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 on June 1. Join the Poland library on May 23 at noon for a special author event featuring Renate Frydman, whose book, “Anschel’s Story: Determined to Survive,” tells the story of her late-husband’s survival in Nazi-occupied Poland. Decades rewind party The Poland library is hosting a special summer program for teens on July 12 at 6 p.m. Celebrate the hits of the past at this music decades party. Feel free to come in costume and dance the night away.

The Prom Promise demonstration happens once every two years so all students see it as a junior or senior in school. The event featured fire trucks, ambulances, police cars and the Metro Life Flight helicopter, which landed in the senior parking lot during the event.

Poland Seminary High School had their Prom Promise on April 27 in hopes of preventing their students from drinking and driving. The event featured a speaker and a live demonstration of first responders at a car crash.

School shows students consequences of drunk driving

Poland Seminary High School had their Prom Promise event on April 27 to deter students from drinking and driving on prom night.

The event, for the school’s juniors and seniors, included a speaker and a drunk driving accident demonstration from emergency services. They have a speaker each year, but only have the demonstration every other year.

“We want to get everyone back to their families as they left them,” said principal Kevin Snyder. He said he hopes the programs give the students perspective without having to go through something like this, as he has. “It can happen in the blink of an eye.”

The program began w ith speaker Michael Gershe of The Magic of Life, an impaired driving prevention program. Gershe started on a light tone. He had students come on stage and wear impairment goggles, which simulated drunken vision. The students tried to toss a beanbag back and forth, unsuccessfully.

He then spoke about how drunk driving had affected his life. His family had been in an

accident caused by a drunk driver that killed his mother.

Later in life, his college friend was in a fatal crash while intoxicated as well.

The students filed outside after the presentation. In the front of the school, local emergency services had placed vehicles in a crash scene for a demonstration.

They placed members of the prom court in the scene to act as victims of the crash. The students wore special makeup to look like blood and wounds.

“We want to give them the idea of what could really happen,” said Christine Gotti, one of the organizers for the event.

She said they add in their peers to the demonstration because it makes the it more personal for the students.

The fire department played sound effects of a crash on loud speakers. Seconds later, fire trucks, police cars and ambulances rushed around the corner to the scene. The first responders began pulling the students from the wreckage using numerous piece of equipment.

Each of the students faked different injuries, including one who played as if he were in critical condition. The ambulance strapped him to a stretcher. Moments later, the Life Flight heli-

copter fly overhead and landed in the senior parking lot. The strapped him to their stretcher and placed him in the back of the helicopter, but they did not lift off.

Another student laid on the front of the car as if she had been tossed through the windshield. They had to pry the top of the vehicle off and place her on a stretcher with a white sheet over her as if she died.

“It’s a great opportunity for

the kids to see what occurs on a bad decision,” said resource officer Steve Kent. He said he hopes that the students think of this as a learning experience and understand the pain that comes with losing a friend.

The crash presentation happens once every other year so that all students see it either as a junior or a senior. The school hopes the students will make wise decisions on their prom night.

Dobbins Elementary rewarded their students with a special trip to Youngstown Skate on April 9 for their hard work during the school’s Read-a-thon.

The school’s Read-a-thon began Feb. 5 and extended until Feb. 24. Principal Michael Daley set up a number of different goals for the students to reach during the Read-a-thon. This event also allowed them to raise funds for the school.

“They seemed motivated by [the goals],” said Daley.

The logged in more than 150,000 minutes during their read-a-thon, smashing the 115,000 minute goal for the skate party. The students tracked the time they spent reading in a log.

Nearly 80 of the students in the school chose to read during their recess break on Feb. 5 to get a good start on the program.

The PTO paid for everyone’s price of admission, though the skate rental, concessions and games were still priced normally.

The families enjoyed the opportunities available during their two hours. They skated, and the other Youngstown Skate representatives organized games to play on the rink. The families competed against each other in games like Skee-Ball in the game area. The children climbed and crawled through the skywalk, a play area that rises to the ceiling.

Preserving genealogical records and heirlooms This event at the Poland library on May 17 at 6:30 p.m. is your introduction to preservation and conservation issues relevant to the genealogist. Gathering Place event to be May 14 Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will be the location of a Gathering Place event on May 14 at 11 a.m. There will be a speaker from Melnick Medical Museum at YSU, speaking on “Quack Medicine and the FDA.” This museum is dedicated to documenting the history of medicine, especially as it relates to the local area. Buckeye Hospice will provide free blood pressure readings at the beginning of the program, so arrive promptly at 11 a.m. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Poland Middle participates in Math 24 Neighbors | Submitted?

This year, members of Poland Middle School competed in the Math 24 Competition, which took place at Campbell Elementary School. Many schools from Mahoning County competed in this yearly event, in which students use cards to solve math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to yield an answer of 24. The competition runs fourth through eighth grade, each level of math becoming increasingly difficult. This year, several students from Poland Middle School placed in the top 16 for their age groups.

HIP Football presents donation to Holy Family Three Holy Family students Dominic Payne, Osiron Talbott, and Greggory Hann presented a check, alongside Coach Dan Talbott, to Kathy Stoops and Holy Family School in Poland for their participation in the very first HIP Football training session.

This check was presented from HIP to their school as a way to give back to their local community.

HIP (Head Impact Prevention) Football was created by former YSU graduate and NFL

linebacker Tim Johnson as an alternative to youth tackle football for those who still want to learn the real fundamentals of the game without serious injury.

HIP Football allows children of all ages to learn proper techniques and real football fundamentals in all positions on the field while maintaining their health and safety in the game.

a second-grader at Holy Family School, said. “I also like that HIP supports my school and my school is learning about HIP.” Stoops appreciated the financial gift from the organization and her students. Library hosts “crafternoon”

The Poland library had a crafting session inspired by birds on April 6 in their meeting room.

Hayley McEwing, supervisor for the Poland and Springfield libraries, ran the event. The event, “Crafternoon: Inspired by Birds,” combined learning about nature and making crafts.

“I am fascinated about learning and identifying birds by sound,” said McEwing. She continued to say that she wanted to get people interested in the nature of the area.

She suggested that the attendees take a walk near Yellow Creek next to the library before the event to hear some of the birds firsthand. Once the event started, she used a laptop and books to do her presentation.

The books on the front table all dealt with identifying birds from their sounds. Most of the books came from within the PLYMC, while others came from other libraries in Ohio.

She showed the group a couple of the books, such as Donald Kroodsma’s “The Backyard Birdsong Guide: Eastern and Central North America: A Guide to Listening.” This book had a built-in audio player that played over 100 different bird noises.

Many of the other books came with CDs to listen to the birds covered within the book.

Hayley McEwing led the “Crafternoon: Inspired by Birds” program at the Poland library on April 6. The program looked at birds and their singing abilities. At the end of the program, McEwing brought out a coloring activity and a paper craft for those in attendance of the program.

She played two videos from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology about bird noises. One showed a number of ornithologists making bird sounds and how they remember to replicate them, such as pretending to say “drink your tea.”

The other video demonstrated the vocal range of a cardinal, which have a larger pitch range than a piano. She also showed another video showing birds’ syrinx, or vocal chords. They can use both sides independently to

make two different sounds at once.

After giving some information about bird sounds and how they make them, McEwing passed around two crafts books that did not belong to the library to the attendees. These books had coloring activities and origami exercises. The latter had attendees pull the paper from the book and fold it into a given shape, at which point the folder would toss the piece of paper so it would glide through the air.

Holy Family youth ministry keeps busy Neighbors | Submitted

Holy Family Youth Ministry was busy during Holy Week. They participated in the foot washing and procession at Holy Thursday Mass; prepared and facilitated the games and Easter Egg Hunt at Holy Saturday’s Easter Egg-stravaganza and helped decorate the church for Easter Sunday.

Children ran around the yard of Poland United Methodist Church as they scrambled to collect the most eggs during the church’s Easter egg hunt on March 31.

The church scattered more than 20,000 eggs in the back and side yards around the church.

Each child registered for the event received a prize from the church.

“It’s a nice time for people to come together,” said Becca Simon, the children’s outreach di-

rector with the church, continuing to say that the holiday brings people from out of town back to visit their families and go to the church for the annual Easter celebration.

The members of the church had a dinner and fill the eggs.

Then, they began spreading them in the yard at around 6 a.m. on the day of the event. The hunt began at 9:30 a.m. and lasted for about an hour.

In addition to the hunt, the church set up a bake sale, a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. They

also had someone dressed as the Easter bunny walk around the parking lot and pose for pictures with families.

The church has had the event for more than 50 years. They have gotten approximately 200 people each time in recent years.

Graduate Assistant Office of Institutional Advancement The role of the Graduate Assistant in the Office of Institutional Advancement includes management of Westminster College’s state charity registration compliance program, as well as, management of the dayto-day operations for the Office’s interactive student fundraising programs. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or

relate field. Ability to conceptualize, write and edit, accurate and concise content for prospective students and their families. Knowledge of AP Style is preferred. Knowledge of how to contact sources, conduct interviews and manage stakeholder expectations. Familiarity with Photoshop and InDesign. Experience as a photographer and/or videographer is a plus, but not required. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and to work under pressure with tight deadlines and/or changing circumstances.
