Coffee with the Master Gardeners – Native Plants Do youwant to know how to enhance your landscape with native plant varieties? If so, join the Mahoning County Master Gardeners for some coffee and refreshments while learning about Ohio’s many native plants. This program will take place on June 19, and starts at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and continues with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speakers Sheila Cubick, Peg Zeleznik and Kary Shively, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteers, will demonstrate how native plants can add variety to a landscape. Poland Historical Society to meet The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. on May 15 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Po-

land Township. The presenter for the 7:30 p.m. program will be Mark Dolak, a volunteer with the Mill Creek Metro Parks. Dolak will talk about the history of Mill Creek Park beginning with the founder, Volney Rogers, and his contributions starting in 1880 up to the present day of the park.

CVMS students raise money for Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade students, Emma Dodig-Drahotusky, Jackie Kinnick and Karley D’Apolito, have completed their A.C.E project to help the community. The A.C.E. (Ambitious Citizens for Empathy) program is an initiative taken on by the gifted children of CVMS to help the community. Dodig-Drahotusky, Kinnick and D’Apolito decided to raise money for the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. The girls had an art and bake sale at the Canfield Lions Club Craft show on April 1. Dodig-Drahotusky drew all of the art, and JKinnick and D’Apolito supplied the baked goods for the sale. The three ended up raising $400, which was presented to Crystal Eckman, on the behalf of the Rescue Mission on April 28. DodigDrahotusky, Kinnick and D’Apolito thank the people of the community for buying their art and baked goods, because without their support they would have never been able to reach their goal.

The event takes place each year before the prom to allow families, friends, fellow students and members of the community to come out and see the amazing dresses and tuxes, and to support the students on their special night.

YAPA to have May event The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association (YAPA) will host a senior soireé event at Selah Restaurant, located at 130 S. Bridge Street in Struthers, on May 25 at 7 p.m. for sorority alumnae that are interested in continuing their sisterhood. Light refreshments will be provided. YAPA allows for friendships with your sorority alumnae and Panhellenic sisters, leadership development, fun events such as sisterhoods and socials, and enriching activities throughout the year. YAPA has been building the bonds of Panhellenic sisterhood for ninety-one years. The group has raised funds for collegiate Greek women, local nonprofit organizations and currently is committed to raise funds toward its endowment for its scholarship. YAPA has received a Citation of Merit for programming for the third straight year from the National Panhellenic Conference and a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Programming in 2015 for collegiate alumnae Panhellenic relations, activities and events. Youngstown Alumnae

Mahoning County Educational Service Center has awarded two $500 Franklin B. Walter local scholarships. Max Lee, a senior at Canfield High School, was recognized from Mahoning County. Lee went on to represent the MCESC, as one of 88 seniors from across Ohio at the 28th annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Awards Program in Columbus on April 12. The Franklin B. Walter Scholarship is awarded to one high school senior from each county in Ohio that has shown outstanding academic achievement through grades, test scores, involvement in activities and awards. Out of a dozen applicants, Lee was selected as the Mahoning County winner by the MCESC. Lee is very involved at Canfield High School, with activities including tennis, debate, academic challenge, NHS and student council. He founded a nonprofit organization called MyGateway Prep, which provides free ACT tutoring to students in Mahoning County, as well as other states. He volunteers at Akron Children’s Hospital, Angels for Animals and Shepherd of the Valley. Lee plans to attend Stanford University in the Fall and major in Public Policy.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17 The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Rotary Youth Leadership Award to Campbell and Wexler Neighbors | Submitted

Two Canfield High School juniors were selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) weekend conference in February 2017. Carly Campbell and Eleanor Wexler were selected by CHS and the Canfield Rotary to attend the all-expense paid weekend. RYLA encourages servant leadership in youth by recognizing and rewarding deserving eleventh-grade students who are chosen to attend RYLA as an “award” for their past and present leadership and service activities. RYLA’s intent is to encourage students to be more effective servant leaders. The topics covered included fundamentals of leadership, ethics of positive leadership, qualities of a “servant leader,” importance of communication skills in effective leadership, conflict management and problem solving, building self-esteem and self confidence and elements of community and global citizenship.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for May 15 The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be May 15 from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main Street in Canfield. Pagnotta won Commitment to Literacy Award

Julie Pagnotta, Early Childhood Instructor at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, received the Commitment to Literacy Award from the Mahoning Valley Council of the International Reading Association at a reception at A la Cart Catering recently. Pagnotta has been an instructor at MCCTC since 1987 and has always promoted the love of literature and the importance of reading. Pagnotta was nominated for the award by her co-worker and friend, Terry Billock, who believed that Pagnotta was truly worthy of this award.

Clue, the Musical to show at the Vic Neighbors | Submitted

Was it Colonel Mustard in the ballroom with a revolver? Was it Mrs. Peacock in the library with a candlestick? If you are a fan of the board game or the movie, now you can see “Clue, the Musical” at the Vic. The show opens on May 19 and runs weekends May 1928, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Vic is located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The plot is a murder mystery trying to determine which of the characters killed Mr. Boddy. Co-director Nick Mulichak said audience members draw cards to select the murderer, room and weapon. The show has 216 variations of how the mystery can unfold. This is the second musical to be performed at the Vic, having produced “Fantasticks” in 2013. The board decided to add a musical to its seasonal line up due to the availability and support of Marlene Menaldi Strollo and Mulichak, directors; Nick Opritza, choreographer; and musical directors Ed Phillips and Errol Kehrburg. CVMS band members earn superior ratings On March 25, 39 members of the Canfield Village Middle School band program participated in 33 events at the annual Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 5 Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. This year’s event took place at Struthers High School. The OMEA Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event is an opportunity for middle school instrumental and vocal students to perform before an adjudicator and be evaluated on that performance. The students enter in a variety of events from solo performances to large ensembles. Each event is evaluated and awarded a rating. The rating system used is “I” for a superior performance, “II” for an outstanding performance, “III” for an acceptable performance, “IV” for a poor performance and “V” for a very poor performance. Canfield Village Middle School Band earned 32 “Superior” and 1 “Outstanding” ratings.

Co-chairs Susan Stewart (Boardman) and Pam Nock (Austintown) and the committee plan a special afternoon of support, inspiration and hope for the breast cancer survivors. Pinwheels where planted at Boardman Park to represent adults who have spoken out on behalf of the 1,652 children in Mahoning County in 2016 who were abused. Edward L. Gilbert attended Boardman Park on April 3 with dozens of other people in the community to bring awareness to child abuse. This event was the 13th annual Pinwheels for Prevention and was organized by Andrea Mistovich of the Child Advocacy Center and Jennifer Kollar of Mahoning County Children Services. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Gilbert, lawyer

and author, came to the event as the keynote speaker to shine light on the problem of abuse. Gilbert spoke about his life growing up in foster care and living in an abusive household. “Last year, I helped sponsor a Senate bill that allows foster care kids to stay in foster care and not age out until age 21,” said Gilbert. Mistovich and Kollar normally get speakers such as judges, officials and others who are able to talk about the subject of child abuse. “We really wanted someone this year who could speak specifically about child welfare system,” said Jennifer Kollar. The first year there were around 50 people in attendance

and this year there were more than 100. Kollar and Mistovich hope to continue to grow the event allowing people to come together and see the impact of what they can do when they help a child. “It’s very exciting. Each year it has grown so I think the word is getting out so we are getting more of the prevention message out to people,” said Mistovich. “The more people we can get the message to the better.” Along with Gilbert, there was a speech by Sniper, President of the Bikers Against Child Abuse, Erie Shores Ohio Chapter. Sniper spoke about BACA and gave the “Biker Creed” presentation. After Sniper’s presentation, members of the com-

munity were awarded with the Community Spotlight Award for working together to build a fence for a family and the children they foster. Pastor JoAnn Pangio, a Mahon i ng Cou nt y Ch i ld ren’s Services board member, gave a benediction at the end of the program. The guests were then given lunch and the opportunity to speak with Gilbert, Sniper and other community members who attended the event. Kollar and Mistovich hope those who attended the event will help spread the word about Pinwheels for Prevention and get more people involved to step in against child abuse and neglect.

Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School raised the most money per student than any other school in Mahoning County during the Handel’s Koins for Kids Campaign to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. As a reward, the entire school was treated to an ice cream party on April 13. This is the third time the school has won the party.

“This is the third time in the six years I have been here that the students have won this contest. I think it really speaks to our community and their support and it speaks to our kids wanting to help others,” said Travis Lavery, C.H. Campbell principal. As the students entered the gym, they were ushered through the ice cream line and were able to choose from several toppings, such as strawberries, choco-

late syrup, sprinkles, crushed cookies, whipped cream and, of course, a cherry on top. Dance music played as the children ate their sundaes. Jody Nerone of Handel’s Corporate Office was happy to be serving the children ice cream. “We are very thankful for C.H. Campbell’s students continued support of Koins for Kids program. Canfield High School senior Zachery Bernat participated in a letter of intent signing ceremony to attend Western Kentucky University and join their Collegiate Forensics Team on April 13. Ber nat, a Ca n f ield Hig h School speech and debate team member and Ohio State Champion in the Humorous Interpretation category, will continue his speech and debate career while at WKU as a Communication major. Bernat is a four-year speech and debate team member who was in the Top 12 in the State and a national qualifier in both his sophomore and junior years. Canfield High School speech and debate team Coach Jeremy Hamilton welcomed Bernat’s family, friends, classmates and teammates to the ceremony. “Good afternoon and welcome. Thank you for coming out today for Zach. This is a first for the speech and debate team and a first for me in my 12 years as coach. Western Kentucky is one of the top programs in the

U.S. Zach is bound for great things, in college and beyond,” Hamilton said. Hamilton then turned the floor over to Bernat. “First of all, thank you to my family. They have been my rock for the past four years. Whenever I got down on myself, they were there to build me back up. Thank you to my coaches who really helped me out. Thank you to my friends out there. I have characters based on each and every one of you. Speech and Debate has been the best experience for me. In my four years of high school, this has been the best thing I have ever done. Thank you for coming and I will miss you all very much,” Bernat said. Bernat also mentioned he is an aspiring actor and has some big dreams. “My dream is to be on Saturday Night Live,” Bernat said. Hamilton closed the ceremony with one last thought. “It has been an honor to have Zach on the Canfield High School Speech and Debate Team. He is one among all our great team members,” Hamilton said.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Denise Hartzell of Poland and Cecil and Suzette Wiggins of Irvington. The prospective groom is the son of the late Daniel Auwerda and Deborah Cummings. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. July 15 at Lighthouse Baptist Church, Theodore, Ala., where a reception will follow. Invitations will be issued for both events.
