New business lectures series kicks off on May 22 SCORE Youngstown recently announced a new business lecture series called “From Bagels to Business.” Entrepreneurs will enjoy Kravitz bagels and coffee, while learning about current information designed to support small business success. Mark Cole of Mark Cole Insurance Agency, will launch this series with “Effective Networking for Leaders” on May 22 from 9-10:30 p.m. at Kravitz Deli, located at 3135 Belmont Ave. in Liberty. Cole serves as a Score mentor, current Chair of the Regional Chamber’s Ambassador to the Community Committee, is active in many local organizations and brings more than 30 years of experience to his presentation. YAPA to have May event The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association (YAPA) will host a senior soireé event at Selah Restaurant, located at 130 S. Bridge Street in Struthers, on May 25 at 7 p.m. for sorority alumnae that are interested in continuing their sisterhood. Light refreshments will be provided. YAPA allows for friendships with your sorority alumnae and Panhellenic sisters, leadership development, fun events such as sisterhoods and socials, and enriching activities throughout the year. YAPA has been building the bonds of Panhellenic sisterhood for ninety-one years. The group has raised funds for collegiate Greek women, local nonprofit organizations and currently is committed to raise funds toward its endowment for its scholarship. Fellows to host Mother’s Day brunch There will be a Mother’s Day brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens on May 14. There will be two seatings, one at noon and another at 3 p.m. The menu will include fresh fruit, tossed salad, sweet rolls and Kravitz bagels, a made-to-order omlette bar, applewood smoked bacon, a carving station with turkey breast and certified Angus prime rib, haddock Francaise, chicken marsala, chicken tenders, stuffed cabbage, steamed green beans, macaroni and cheese, tortellini in vodka sauce and desserts of assorted pies, brownies and cheesecakes. The cost is $28 for adults after tax and gratuity, $14 for children ages 12-5 after tax and gratuity and free for children ages 4 and younger. Students at Poland Union Elementary have been in and out of the greenhouse a lot lately due to the weather warming up. Each student was given the opportunity to go to the greenhouse to plant tomatoes to take home. Along with the tomatoes, the students planted and took home flowers for Mother’s Day coming up. “I like how we can plant flowers and vegetables,” said secondgrader Mya Lister. Many of the students said they enjoyed being able to learn in a hands-on way and having the opportunity to take home something they helped take care of themselves. The students were all given instructions on how to care for the tomato plants and the flowers. “My favorite part was being able to grow the plants,” said second-grader Derek Evan. Local church hosts festival June 14-18 Saint Nicholas Church, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers, is having its 44th annual festival on June 14-18. Admission price is $2, and children who are ages 12 and under are free. June 14 from 6-10 p.m. will be Children’s Night with discounted ride tickets, Joko the Clown (from 6:30-8:30 p.m.) and pony rides all week. There will also be a new Father’s Day Parish Raffle, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction all week. On June 15, the festival will run from 6-11 p.m. and will feature the Del Sinchak Polka Band from 6-10 p.m. On June 16, the festival will run from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. and Guys Without Ties will perform at 7 p.m. On June 17 (6 p.m. until 12 a.m.), Haymaker - the Rock Band will perform at 7 p.m. On June 18 (6-11 p.m.), will feature the Power of Praise band from 6-10 p.m. The event will feature homemade food, games, rides and more. The festival is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #4471. Entrances to festival include Creed Street between the school and the hall, and Wilson Street between the church and Tiny Tots. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces,

Star gazing party to be June 3 The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Participants will be viewing the planets and deep space objects through telescopes and binoculars. It is suggested that you bring bug spray and bottled water. GA to meet twice this week Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. tomatoes grew. Two of the students in unison said “I don’t like tomatoes” then the others followed, but they had other ideas of how to utilize the plant. There were even mentions of making ketchup out of the tomatoes. Some of the second-grade students came up with names that they wanted to call their tomato plants. Junior League to host Pink Ribbon Tea OUR TOWN Neighbors | Submitted
The Junior League of Youngstown will host the 23rd annual Pink Ribbon Tea, a celebration for breast cancer survivors, on Aug. 21 at Stambaugh Auditorium. Survivors attend for free as the event is supported by underwriters, sponsors and Junior League members. Co-chairs Susan Stewart (Boardman) and Pam Nock (Austintown) and the committee plan a special afternoon of support, inspiration and hope for the breast cancer survivors. Dr. Antoine Chahine of the Blood and Cancer Center will serve as the Honorary Chair. Gina Marinelli of Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley will serve as the emcee. Brian Palumbo and Rachell Joy will be this year’s featured entertainment. A gift basket raffle and goody bags will be available to all in attendance. ‘Clue, the Musical’ at the Vic Neighbors | Submitted
Was it Colonel Mustard in the ballroom with a revolver? Was it Mrs. Peacock in the library with a candlestick? If you are a fan of the board game or the movie, now you can see “Clue, the Musical” at the Vic. The show opens on May 19 and runs weekends May 19-28, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Vic is located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The plot is a murder mystery trying to determine which of the characters killed Mr. Boddy. Co-director Nick Mulichak said audience members draw cards to select the murderer, room and weapon. The show has 216 variations of how the mystery can unfold. This is the second musical to be performed at the Vic, having produced “Fantasticks” in 2013. The board decided to add a musical to its seasonal line up due to the availability and support of Marlene Menaldi Strollo and Mulichak, directors; Nick Opritza, choreographer; and musical directors Ed Phillips and Errol Kehrburg. Eagle Scouts and adult volunteers receive recognition The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America hosted their 2017 District Recognition and Awards Dinner recently at St. James Episcopal Church in Boardman. This yea r’s dinner honored 30 Eagle Scouts who, in 2016, earned the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle Scout Award. Several adult volunteers completed training awards as well as the 2016 Scouting Family of the Year, Cubmaster of the Year, Scoutmaster of the Year and the highest award a district can present to an adult Scouter, the District Award of Merit were named. Scouts of the Whispering Pines District, which serves Mahoning County and Hubbard, that earned their Eagle Scout Award in 2016 were Austintown Troop 184 – Matthew Luknis, Leo Puhalla and Kyle D. Courses generally have a combined classroom and practical outdoors-based phase followed by a Wood Badge ticket, also known as the project phase. Pinwheels for Prevention brings awareness to child abuse

Pinwheels where planted at Boardman Park to represent adults who have spoken out on behalf of the 1,652 children in Mahoning County in 2016 who were abused. Edward L. Gilbert attended Boardman Park on April 3 with dozens of other people in the community to bring awareness to child abuse. This event was the 13th annual Pinwheels for Prevention and was organized by Andrea Mistovich of the Child Advocacy Center and Jennifer Kollar of Mahoning County Children Services. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Gilbert, lawyer and author, came to the event as the keynote speaker to shine light on the problem of abuse. Gilbert spoke about his life growing up in foster care and living in an abusive household. “Last year, I helped sponsor a Senate bill that allows foster care kids to stay in foster care and not age out until age 21,” said Gilbert. Mistovich and Kollar normally get speakers such as judges, officials and others who are able to talk about the subject of child abuse. “We really wanted someone this year who could speak specifically about child welfare system,” said Jennifer Kollar. Kollar and Mistovich hope to continue to grow the event allowing people to come together and see the impact of what they can do when they help a child. “It’s very exciting. Each year it has grown so I think the word is getting out so we are getting more of the prevention message out to people,” said Mistovich. “The more people we can get the message to the better.” Along with Gilbert, there was a speech by Sniper, President of the Bikers Against Child Abuse, Erie Shores Ohio Chapter. Sniper spoke about BACA and gave the “Biker Creed” presentation. After Sniper’s presen-
tation, members of the community were awarded with the Community Spotlight Award for working together to build a fence for a family and the children they foster. Pastor JoAnn Pangio, a Mahon ing Cou nt y Ch i ld ren’s Services board member, gave a benediction at the end of the program. The guests were then given lunch and the opportunity to speak with Gilbert, Sniper and other community members who attended the event. Kollar and Mistovich hope those who attended the event will help spread the word about Pinwheels for Prevention and get more people involved to step in against child abuse and neglect.

Poland North Preschool students hopped their way into class on April 12 and 13 to celebrate Easter with their teachers and classmates. Students participated in egg hunts, crafting, special Easter snacks and more fun and games. Many of the students dressed up in Easter outfits and some students wore bunny ears. Joy Bucci and her students played a pin the tail on the bunny game and tried to tape a cotton ball onto a rabbit while they were blindfolded. They also participated in an egg hunt outside and made their own bunny
bags to put their treats in. Samantha Cox and her students had different stations they participated in during their celebration. They went on an egg hunt, dyed Easter eggs and made a craft that was a bunny on one side and a duck when the students f lipped it over. Danielle Argeras’ students dyed Easter eggs, made crafts and their own bunny ears. The plastic eggs were filled with candy, stickers and other special surprises for the students. Throughout the week the students participated in several activities and made different crafts to get prepared for the upcoming holiday.
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be fol-

Mr. Cadman and the former Miss Ohlinger were married Feb. 19, 1957, in Youngstown. Their children are Jim (Debbie) Cadman of Warren, Denise (Rick) Matiscik of Denver, Colo., Susan (Lance) Newton of Canfield, David (Ann Marie) Cadman of Holly Springs, N.C., and Robert (Evelyn) Cadman of Phoenix. They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Cadman is a homemaker and volunteered regularly with the West Side Parent Teacher’s Association. She is a member of County Extension and volunteers at Big Reach Hope Center in Greenford. Mr. Cadman is an Army veteran and retired from the Youngstown Fire Department in 1991 as a captain with 29 years of service.
