Daryl
Snickers
Daryl was being fed outside by a wonderful person who then brought him in when the weather turned colder. He likes people and other cats. It would take a very special person(s) to work with Daryl. Daryl is considered a Special Needs cat. You must have patience and time. Daryl turned two on Nov. 6. He is nervous and timid. He interacts with the volunteers and the other cats and has made great progress! I would not recommend having a dog with him though. Daryl would like a quiet home so he can learn to trust again.
Its has been one year since Snickers was a part of a real family and has had an actual home. Found as a stray in Trumbull County in April Snickers was never claimed by his owner. He hung around for a while at TCDP, then we brought him to our shelter. He’s come a long way in that year. He has been through surgery. Snickers met a lot of people that had thought he would be a good fit but he has been disappointed many times. We are offering training for him with his adoption, which will be covered by our volunteers.

Chinese culture comes to Beeghley Oaks By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Beeghley Oaks Center for Rehabilitation and Healing hosted a week long Chinese Culture program starting April 11 and ending April 15. Maureen McCarty, activities director for Beeghley Oaks, put together several activities to bring the employees and residents together while learning about another culture. There was a Chinese auction, several presentations, crafts and more for the residents to participate in. On April 14, LNHA Administrator, Lori Ference, brought in her Kimono, Netsuke and Rickshaw collection to show the residents. All of the residents who attended wore homemade fishing hats. At the end of the presentation, one of the residents gave Ference a pineapple as a thank you for sharing her
collections. China Garden in Struthers provided Chinese desserts for the residents to enjoy after the presentation. Missionaries, Pat and Ken Goss, came to Beeghley Oaks on April 15 to share stories about their time in China. They brought pictures and souvenirs from when they lived in China for 18 years. At the end of the week, the winners of the Chinese auction were announced. The winners received gifts brought in by residents and staff. Located in the hallway with the Chinese auction were posters and pictures about China and its culture set up for the residents to look at. “We’re trying to create enthusiasm within the commuNeighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci nity engagement for the residents and the employees to get Pictured are, from left, Pastor Ma Yea, Tom Drummond and Bill Byard. Rival high schools face-off on the ice at Phantoms game By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Boardman High School and Austintown Fitch High School drum lines participated in a Battle of the Bands on April 9 at the Covelli Centre during a Youngstown Phantoms game. Bot h dr um lines played throughout the hockey game during the breaks. Each school
was seated on separate sides of the ice so they would be facing each other as if they were in a face-off. Boardman and Austintown, long time rivals, took to the ice during the second intermission of the Youngstown Phantoms hockey game to show off their skills. Both drum lines performed two sets and it was up to the audience to decide the win-
ner. After a separate performance, the winner was announced and it was a tie. The drum lines came together to put on a performance as one. The drum lines performed for all of those in attendance at the hockey game. Those who attended the game got a night filled with music and a game that ended in a win for the Youngstown Phantoms.

Elaine Mancini, founder of the Boardman Civic Associations Scholarship Fund, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 26th annual Scholarship Dinner on April 14.
Scholarship banquet celebrates students By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman Civic Association hosted its 26th annual Academic Achievement Banquet on April 14 at the Boardman Holiday Inn. There were 126 students from Boardman High School, Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline and Youngstown Christian High School who attended the banquet this year. Out of those students, six were chosen to receive a scholarship for $750 toward their college tuition. The Boardman Civic Asso-
ciation has a scholarship fund, which is supported by BCA members’ contributions and by the community. Students must meet the standard of having a 3.5 GPA or above and to be involved in community and civic activities. Doug Sweeney was presented with an award for Business Person of the Year. Elaine Mancini, the founder of the scholarship, was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mancini founded the scholarship foundation 26 years ago. Senator Joe Schiavoni was the special guest speaker at the
scholarship award banquet. Schiavoni gave a speech to the students about maintaining strong work ethics and to continue to be active in the community. The six winners of the scholarship were Adele Belgrad, Nicholas Bucci, Addison CookeMurphy, Emily Hoban, Veronica Marcella and Natalie Pilolli. “Twenty-six years ago, my PTA background and my Board of Education background led me to think that we needed to recognize the academic accomplishments of the seniors in our township,” said Mancini.

Ca rd i na l Moone y H ig h School celebrated its third annual YES Fest on April 14. The YES Fest welcomes a keynote speaker every year to talk to the students and this year it was Youngstown native, Maurice Clarett. Clarett started off his speech talking about his life and what it was like growing up. He spoke about how he got into trouble various times throughout his life, but has recovered and is trying to show how people can overcome their pasts. YES Fest is used as a tactic to communicate to the students to say yes to alternatives of drugs and alcohol. The speak-
ers who attend are usually people who have went through addiction and can tell the students what it is like or counselors who work with people suffering from addiction. “We have it separated into two groups, seniors and juniors, then freshman and sophomores. We felt it was more effective to break up the audience and get a more personal message,” said Mark Vollmer, principal at Mooney. After hearing the Clarett’s presentation, the students went to the gymnasium to explore the different organizations that had tables set up. Several organizations and agencies from the community brought information and a representative was available for the students to
talk to about different activities they can participate in. There were tutoring opportunities, chances to volunteer and other programs to keep them occupied and away from drugs and drinking. “We have about 30 different community agencies where students can have volunteer opportunities, things they can sign up for outside of the school to keep themselves occupied where they’re not focused on those negative things,” said Vollmer. YES Fest, which was originally started at Boardman High School, was adapted by Cardinal Mooney. With the success of the YES Fest at Mooney, it is something that the school is looking to continue doing for the students.
