Daryl
Snickers
Daryl was being fed outside by a wonderful person who then brought him in when the weather turned colder. He likes people and other cats. It would take a very special person(s) to work with Daryl. Daryl is considered a Special Needs cat. You must have patience and time. Daryl turned two on Nov. 6. He is nervous and timid. He interacts with the volunteers and the other cats and has made great progress! I would not recommend having a dog with him though. Daryl would like a quiet home so he can learn to trust again.
Its has been one year since Snickers was a part of a real family and has had an actual home. Found as a stray in Trumbull County in April Snickers was never claimed by his owner. He hung around for a while at TCDP, then we brought him to our shelter. He’s come a long way in that year. He has been through surgery. Snickers met a lot of people that had thought he would be a good fit but he has been disappointed many times. We are offering training for him with his adoption, which will be covered by our volunteers.

“Service brings out the best in everyone. High school is the time to figure out where we fit. The possibilities are endless. I challenge you to do more service and inspire the person next to you,” Rosteck said before lighting the candle for Service. In his speech about scholarship, Kan told the students he has figured out three truths about scholarship. “I have figured out three truths about scholarship. Scholarship is power, scholarship is for all and scholarship is infinite. Knowledge always prevails. Scholarship is much more than a perfect score on a test.
It is the key to society’s greatest achievements - past, present and future,” Kan said before lighting the candle for Scholarship. Senator Joe Schiavoni was the guest speaker for the ceremony. He encouraged the students to work hard and focus on the four pillars. “Work ethic builds character and portrays you as a leader. Actions speak louder than words. Scholarship and education truly is a platform to give you direction and leeway to figure out what you want to do in life,” Schiavoni told the students. Wensel then addressed the audience. “We are here to congratulate these junior class members. They deserve credit for their success, as do those who escorted
them down the aisle today and any others who lovingly encouraged them to be the people they are today,” Wensel said. Wensel awarded the Leadership and Service Award to senior Heather Haley, who in the first three years of her high school career completed more than 200 service hours. The new inductees were then led in the National Honor Society Pledge for Membership, after which they received a standing ovation from their parents, grandparents, friends, classmates and teachers. After the ceremony, inductees and guests enjoyed a reception in the cafeteria which included cookies, fresh fruit, pastries, punch and coffee.

Digital Danger presentation helps prevent Internet danger By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mahoning County Career and Technial Center hosted a Digital Danger presentation on April 19. Digital Danger is an Ohio program that provides digital safety training to parents, children and students all around the Ohio area. Presenters travel around Ohio to teach people about the prevention of Internet related crimes. Kelley Mills, an Austintown guidance counselor, helped set up the event. Mills started the event by giving a brief introduction of what is going to be discussed, then proceeded to tell the guests to use the clickers they received to answer a few questions. Some of the questions that were asked prior to the presentation were asked again after to see what the guests learned.
Mandy Scrocco, a Boardman elementary school counselor, was next to speak. She talked about how elementary counselors help students with various issues and challenges they may be dealing with. Judge Theresa Dellick took the stage after Scrocco and spoke a little about what she sees in juvenile court dealing with Internet danger. “The counselor’s goal, when you get to the heart of it, is to be an advocate for our children and to help create a learning environment that is safe, caring and supportive,” Scrocco told the audience. Officer Don Stanko and Dr. Tim Conrad, two presenters with the Digital Danger program, spent the rest of the evening helping parents and school counselors learn how to keep children out of danger on the Internet.
“Doors open and doors close simply by the use of social media. That’s my message today, simply by what we post can we open doors for ourselves, can we help our kids open doors based on what we post and can we make sure that those doors do not close based on what they post,” Conrad told the audience. Stanko and Conrad gave tips and tricks to help parents keep their children out of Internet danger. The two presenters told guests about anonymous apps and apps that are created to look like something they are not. At the end of the night, the parents, counselors and students walked away with more knowledge about Internet danger and ways to prevent it and stay out of it. The night consisted of several stories, experiences and advice that would help benefit those who listened.

Fellows Riverside Garden hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on April 21. Mandy Smith led the class and taught the children all about moss, algae and lichen. After a brief introduction, the children went outside into the garden to find different kinds of moss, algae and lichen. There were stones and cement ground covered with moss, trees covered with lichen and wet stones from the fountain covered with algae. The children learned how each type of plant is beneficial to the environment and how they are created. The children were eager to have the chance to go outside and be able to look and touch the different plants they were learning about. “Marimo moss come from lakes in Japan and what happens is water moves back and forth and it takes the algae and starts to shape it round. People in Japan have had Marimo moss pets for hundreds of years and they can live for hundreds of years,” said Smith. At the end of the class, each of the children got to make a little home for their own Marimo moss ball. The children put in beads, shells, pearls, rocks and many others items in a jar to make the Marimo moss ball a nice home. Everyone was allowed to take home their Marimo moss ball and have their own little moss pet. The Marimo balls the children were given were small, but can grow to be the size of a soccer ball.

The Canfield Police Department, in cooperation with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, presented the dangers of distracted driving to all Canfield High School students April 29. Canfield Police Department and School Resource Officer Steve Garstka (back) provided, from left, sophomore Madison Terlizzi, senior Andrew Bailing, junior Tanor English, sophomore Paul Breinz, sophomore Nick O’Hara and freshman Zayd Ali with an up-close look at a car involved in a texting and driving accident.
CHS tackles distracted driving By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
To highlight Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Canfield Police Department, in cooperation with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, presented the dangers of distracted driving to all Canfield High School students on April 29. Trooper David Brown, with the State of Ohio Highway Patrol Post in Canfield, addressed the students with the assistance of Canfield Police Department and School Resource Officer Steve Garstka. “This presentation focused on distracted driving, which is any activity which could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. There are many kinds of distracted driving, including drunk driving, drug impaired driving, speed, eating and drinking, putting on make up, using a navigation system, finding music to play and, of course, texting. All distractions endanger driver, passenger and bystander safety, but text messaging requires visual, manual and cognitive attention from the driver, so it is by far the most alarming distraction,” said Officer Steve Garstka. Students will also have an
opportunity to sign a distracted driver pledge and visit a car at the entrance of the school that was involved in a texting crash. The crashed Grand Am was involved in an accident when its 19-year-old driver, with her three-year-old nephew strapped into a car seat in the back, tried to text while driving and totaled the car on Oct. 6, 2015. “Any teacher can contact me throughout the next week and we can take the students outside to get an up-close look at the wrecked car and students can ask any questions they have about distracted driving. They can also sign a pledge to not drive while distracted,” Office Garstka said. Garstka said both the Canfield Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol wanted to give the students the facts about distracted driving. “Five seconds is the average time your eyes are off the road while texting. W hen traveling at 55 miles per hour, that’s enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded. We want these kids to have all the facts and information they need before they get behind the wheel. We want them to be informed and, most importantly, keep themselves safe,” Garstka said.
