Daryl

Snickers

Daryl was being fed outside by a wonderful person who then brought him in when the weather turned colder. He likes people and other cats. It would take a very special person(s) to work with Daryl. Daryl is considered a Special Needs cat. You must have patience and time. Daryl turned two on Nov. 6. He is nervous and timid. He interacts with the volunteers and the other cats and has made great progress! I would not recommend having a dog with him though. Daryl would like a quiet home so he can learn to trust again.

Its has been one year since Snickers was a part of a real family and has had an actual home. Found as a stray in Trumbull County in April Snickers was never claimed by his owner. He hung around for a while at TCDP, then we brought him to our shelter. He’s come a long way in that year. He has been through surgery. Snickers met a lot of people that had thought he would be a good fit but he has been disappointed many times. We are offering training for him with his adoption, which will be covered by our volunteers.

Peg Flynn from the Green Team came to speak to the students at Poland North Preschool on April 22 about the importance of recycling and not littering in honor of Earth Day.

Students get dirty to help keep Earth clean By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland North Preschool students celebrated Earth Day on April 22. Joy Bucci’s class spent Earth Day planting a lilac bush that was donated to them by Kushners Garden and Patio. The students made their way out to the courtyard after finishing their snack to plant the bush. One of the fathers came down to the school to help the students dig a hole and help them put the bush in. When the lilac bush was in its hole, the students took dirt and made sure to cover the roots so the bush would stay in place and grow. Samant ha Cox and Terr y Wittenauer’s class had a visit from Peg Flynn from the Green Team. Flynn, dressed up as Michael Recycle, read the story “Michael Recycle” to the students. Flynn taught the students about recycling and how to help keep the Earth clean. W hen t he stor y was f in-

ished, Flynn passed out cut off pop bottle bottoms to the students. The bottoms of the pop bottles were decorated with ribbon and the students got stickers to put on them too.

Flynn was trying to show that different items can be recycled in various ways. The pop bottle bottoms could be used as a candy dish on a desk, decoration or anything else they

could imagine. Students learned how to do their part to keep the Earth clean and what different activities they can partake in that help the Earth.

Scott Mann, author and retired Green Beret, visited Poland library on April 20 to give a presentation to guests about his book, experiences and various other subjects.

Contract to Protect America, which Congressman Bill Johnson has signed. “We had three times as many come tonight than Boston, Massachusetts did,” Smith. At the end of the presentation, Mann hosted a question and answer session. Several of the guests had a variety of questions for Mann about his thoughts on different aspects of the government to questions about his life and experiences while he served for our country. “The approach to my book is all about community resilience, it’s empowering community re-

silience,” said Mann. Mann has a non-profit called Mission America - Reconnecting Warriors and Citizens. During his presentations, Mann talks about his non-profit and how it is helpful for warriors to reconnect with citizens at a community level. The money Mann earns from his book is put toward Mission America. The Literary Society tries to bring in influential authors, like Mann, to give the audience an event to enjoy while being able to take something away from the message the author has given.

Students who attended the Mother Son night at Poland Union on April 21 participated in several different “Minute to Win it” type of games in the gymnasium.

Night of fun for mothers and sons By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland Union hosted its annual Mother Son night on April 21. The PTO worked the past few months to put together a Mother Son night with a Minute to Win it theme. There were several stations for the sons and their mothers to participate it. The gym was filled with games, the greenhouse outside was open for planting flowers and there was pizza and drinks in the cafeteria. “There are games that you can play within a minute. They’re fun and they get the boys up and moving and active,” said Shawna Lewis, the chair person for the event. The majority of the games were competitive games which made the children excited to compete against each other. There was a game to see who could stack the most apples, ones to see who could stack the most items on a plate on the son or mothers head and a many others. Many of the children had fun in the gym playing with the balloons that floated around. There were also students and their mothers lined up to see the upgraded 120-gallon fish tank that was put up over spring break. Parents and older siblings volunteered to help run the games,

Mahoning County Career and Technial Center hosted a Digital Danger presentation on April 19. Digital Danger is an Ohio program that provides digital safety training to parents, children and students all around the Ohio area. Presenters travel around Ohio to teach people about the prevention of Internet related crimes. Kelley Mills, an Austintown guidance counselor, helped set up the event. Mills started the event by giving a brief introduction of what is going to be discussed, then proceeded to tell the guests to use the clickers they received to answer a few questions. Some of the questions that were asked prior to the presentation were asked again after to see what the guests learned. Mandy Scrocco, a Boardman elementary school counselor, was next to speak. She talked about how elementary counselors help students with various issues and challenges they may be dealing with. Judge Theresa Dellick took the stage after Scrocco and spoke a little about what she sees in juvenile court dealing with Internet danger. “The counselor’s goal, when you get to the heart of it, is to be an advocate for our children and to help create a learning

environment that is safe, caring and supportive,” Scrocco told the audience. Officer Don Stanko and Dr. Tim Conrad, two presenters with the Digital Danger program, spent the rest of the evening helping parents and school counselors learn how to keep children out of danger on the Internet. “Doors open and doors close simply by the use of social media. That’s my message today, simply by what we post can we open doors for ourselves, can we help our kids open doors based on what we post and can we make sure that those doors

do not close based on what they post,” Conrad told the audience. Stanko and Conrad gave tips and tricks to help parents keep their children out of Internet danger. The two presenters told guests about anonymous apps and apps that are created to look like something they are not. At the end of the night, the parents, counselors and students walked away with more knowledge about Internet danger and ways to prevent it and stay out of it. The night consisted of several stories, experiences and advice that would help benefit those who listened.
