very week here at the HBA office, we get calls from consumers who have had a bad experience with a contractor or home improvement company. Our first question always is, “is he/she an HBA member?” More often than not, the consumer says no and requests our help to hire an HBA member to fix the job. While we are grateful for the calls, we want you to call us FIRST and save yourself some time, energy and frustration. It only takes one bad experience for the consumer to learn a very big lesson. BREWER While we don’t rate our members like the Better Business Bureau or show consumer testimonials like Angie’s List, we continue to be a sound place to find a reputable contractor. We’ve actually been doing it since 1945 here in the Valley. I would almost bet that if you own a house built here before 2005, 9 times out of 10 it was built by an HBA Builder. Did I just hear you ask, “so what does it mean to be a member of the HBA?” Thanks for asking! HBA members are required to carry liability insurance and workers comp. Some of the other companies don’t. That’s why their prices are cheaper than others. They fly under the radar and don’t get caught until there’s a problem. And sometimes it turns into the consumer’s problem. HBA members are kept up-to-date on new codes and changes in the industry. These codes have been written for you, the consumer, to keep you and your family safe. They’re given the opportunity to use resources from the National Association of Home Builders which encompass just

about everything in the industry from the latest technology to contracts. NAHB is an incredible resource for any business in the construction industry. When a member joins the HBA they automatically become a member of the Ohio Home Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders. Shouldn’t every business have a support system? Part of every HBA members’ dues goes to OHBA and NAHB for lobbying at the state and national level. While some people consider the ‘L’ word as negative, we don’t. Lobbying is an integral part of keeping this industry on track. Our voice. The lobbying is aimed toward guaranteeing housing affordability, preserving the American Dream of new home ownership and advocating for the new home buyer. Our lobbyists are passionate about the industry and continue to fight for or against the appropriate issues. HBA members are given the best opportunity for discounts that impact their bottom line, so they can keep their prices consistent for the consumer. We believe that helping our members will help the consumers. HBA members also work together. In the four years I’ve been here, I’ve been amazed at the comradery between companies.
