Austintown Middle School hosts 7th STEM showcase By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Austintown Middle School hosted its sevent h a nnua l STEM showcase on May 7. Community members gathered at the school’s gymnasium to hear first hand from students what they learned studying STEM that year. Seventh- and eighth-grade STEM teacher Jason Freudenberg said that the showcase is a way for the community to see what students are working on. “It gives them a lot of agency and ownership over their own

learning,” Freudenberg said. St udents i n g rades f i f t h through 12th were represented at the showcase, displaying a variety of projects. Sixth-grade students Alexis Smallwood and Arianna Jones presented on the field trips their class had gone on throughout the year. Smallwood explained that the group traveled locally, to places such as the Steel Museum, as well as to places farther away such as Cleveland and Pittsburgh. “We get to see a lot, and learn about a lot of really interest-

ing things,” Smallwood said. “Like I know how to make steel now, and how they used to produce it at the steel mill in Youngstown.” Students Mason Prosser and Dashia Johnson also presented at the event. Prosser and Johnson’s exhibit featured a set of circuits, which the students explained how to connect and operate. Johnson said that they were able to construct a working night light, and event studied a little bit of Morse Code to send messages using the light. “It’s really cool, we get to see

how everything connects and why it works they way it does,” she said. Students from Austintown Fitch High School’s Vex robotics team were also presenting during the event. The team brought two of their working robots to showcase, explaining how the robots were built and how they operate. “Austintown has always been a leader in STEM,” Freudenberg said. “You can tell when you talk to any of our student they care a lot about what they are learning, they are invested in it.”

Bonding with Babies and Books Bonding with Babies and Books will take place on Tuesdays in June at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Library hosts after school program for students By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Austintown library hosts students in weekly after school program. Library Supervisor Starr Jones said that the program was created five years ago out of necessity. Because of the library’s proximity to the schools, students from the middle school and high school often travel to the library after classes end. “We were having issues with the students being loud,” Jones said. “It was boring for the students and affected the community as well.” To help combat this the library created the after school program, which is open every day the schools are. “This way students have a place they can come and hang out, and do homework if they need to,” Jones said. She explained that each day librarians plan something different for students to do. Some students prefer to use the computers in the main library to play games, but Jones said many stay in the meeting room. Previously, students have helped librarians create cards, played with 3D pens, participated in a talent show and more. The program also offers board games for students to use daily. “We take turns brain storm-

ing something to do,” Jones said. “Every librarian takes a turn.” Students are given full use of the large meeting room at the library, under librarian supervision. The program is open until 4:30 p.m. every day that the Austintown schools are open. “We want to offer a safe space for kids to go that also allows other library patrons to use our

resources,” Jones said. She said that when the library was closed for a few weeks last year the library worked with the schools to be sure the students are taken care of. “We even sent a few librarians to the schools after school program since they would have more students then they usually would with the library closed,” Jones said.

Members of the Men’s Garden Club of Mahoning County met at Fellows Riverside Garden for their monthly meeting on May 1.

“We got t hat one of f t he ground years ago, and they have really taken it and ran with it,” Schinker said. The Men’s Garden Club also sponsors a horticulture show at Mill Creek Park each year, which includes a variety of plants on display. The group has been in existence in the area since 1930, according to Schinker, who said that they started as the Steel City Men’s Garden Club. T he g roup wa s later renamed, and eventually were

able to find a home in the Mill Creek MetroParks. “It’s the center of gardening and horticulture in the area so it was a perfect place for us,” he said. The group’s next meeting take place on June 3 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. “The purpose of The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown is to create a better understanding of gardening and to encourage and promote the beautification of our community,” Schinker said.

Biotest plasma donation center goes paperless By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Austintown plasma donation center, Biotest, recently made changes to make the donation process easier. The center is located in the Austintown Plaza at 6000 Mahoning Ave., behind the Buffalo Wild Wings. The company recently underwent changes, converting all centers to paperless just this year. Dan Gamache, Director of Plasma Marketing Operations, said that nationally Biotest has 26 centers. “Source plasma donations and blood donations are critically important activities that contribute to saving lives,” Gamache said. “For many with rare diseases, these are the only therapies available to treat their chronic conditions.” Gamache said that this change will not only help the environment, but will stream line the donation process, helping both donors and Biotest employees.
