Canfield resident pays it forward with help from Austintown restaurant Joanne Bruno George, will be the guest bartender at The Manor Restaurant on May 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. She will donate her time to raise funds for the Eastern Regional Kidney Foundation.

The Manor has guaranteed to donate at least 5 percent of the sales she generates to the local charity. George credits the ERKF for helping her survive a life-threatening illness. Participants can have 5 percent of their total purchase donated by printing a flyer to present to their server at the time of payment by visiting the restaurant’s Facebook page. George is the wife of The Manor’s chef, Ron George. She will be the second guest bartender the restaurant has featured. The first guest bartender, Danielle Russo, raised more than $300 for the Warren Relay for Life. The Manor ultimately ended up donating 5 percent of the entire daily sales rather than just the sales Russo generated. The ERKF kidney mascot will be at the restaurant while George is guest bartender. The Manor is looking to have a guest bartender each month, and welcomes anyone interested in participating to place their name, phone number and charity name in a bowl at the bar to be selected. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for May The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on May 21 from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located at 43 W. Main St, in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Landscape pruning clinic Learn how to care for and mold your landscape into a healthy and beautiful space at this pruning clinic covering such topics as disease reduction, regeneration, shape and proper landscape maintenance. Hydrangea school Join Eric Barrett, OSU Extension Educator, to learn all about the world of hydrangeas. Discover which varieties will work best in your garden and landscape, and learn how to properly care for and maintain a successful bed of hydrangeas. C.H. Campbell Elementary School kindergarten students presented “E-I-E-I Oops!” for family and friends at the Canfield High School auditorium on May 14.

Michael Fay, C.H. Campbell music specialist, directed the students in this musical play for young voices by John Jacobson and John Higgins.

Fay welcomed the very large crowd to the show.

“Good evening and welcome to our performance of ‘E-IE-I Oops.’ The students are looking forward to performing for you all. I must say the costumes are amazing. You parents have really outdone you rselves. T ha n k you for that. I would like to thank the kindergarten staff. We have such a strong staff of kindergarten teachers. They do their very best to instruct your children when they are away from you. I would also like to thank our administration. They see the worth of fine arts in our schools. A nd most i mportantly, I would like to thank the children. They are such a blessing to us and I am blessed

T he play opened i n t he barnyard of Farmer MacDonald and the whole barnyard is singing, including roosters, turkeys, chicks, pigs and sheep. But t he cow cannot moo.

The pigs, chicks and sheep all chime in to give sugges-

tions, but Mr. Mule is the one who finds the secret to the cow’s si lence. A l l t he a nimals do their part to save the day. The play is an example of friendship, self esteem and confidence.

The students opened t he show with “E-I-E-I Oops!” and moved into “Ham it Up,” with the spotlight on the students portraying pigs. The students told pig jokes and sang short solos.

The nex t song was “Lost Sheep” featuring three sheep a nd L it t le Bo Peep. “Cute Chicks” was then performed with the spotlight on students dressed as chicks.

The students closed their show with “The Whole Barnyard is Singin,’” with all the animals desperately tr y ing to help the cow finally moo, which he proudly does, much to the delight of both the audience and barnyard animals.

The Canfield High School Choral Music Department will present their annual spring concert on May 24 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Following the honoring of the senior class choir members, students in the concert choir, One Octave Higher ensemble and the chamber ensemble, as well as senior soloists Cara DeChurch, Samantha Morris and Jonathan Scurich, will perform a program of music. The concert concludes with the combined choirs and alumni performing a moving rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The concert is free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the conclusion of the concert. A reception with refreshments will follow in the school cafeteria.

The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks organized the annual Earth Day Clean Up on April 21.

Numerous scouting troops a nd communit y orga ni zations visited 29 locations in the metropark to clean up litter and other debris from the areas.

They received help from communities in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, North Jackson, Poland, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek MetroParks, and Mike Kupec of the Whispering Pines District worked together to organize the program.

“It’s in my blood to help the env ironment,” said Kupec, who has worked with different forestry groups since he was a child. He created the event with Mill Creek’s then-recreational director 36 years ago. He wanted to give back on Earth Day and help clean up the park he grew up near.

Austintown had three organizations assist in cleaning the park: Cub Scout Pack 184, Boy Scout Troop 184 and Girl Scout

Troop 80207. The pack cleaned the Lanterman Gorge, the Boy Scouts took the West Cohasset Trails and the Girl Scouts had the trail behind the Ford Nature Center.

“We want to teach the girls the importance of taking care of the planet,” said Kelly Turner, the head of the Girl Scout Troop 80207. She said this was the group’s first real introduction to the world of scouting.

The Canfield groups included Girl Scout Troop 80095 at the Mill Creek Preserve and Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 115 at Lake Newport. Boy Scout Troop 25 cleaned up at the West Coast Drive on April 25.

Casal’s de’ Spa and Salon also joined the program, helping out at the Lake Glacier Boathouse.

Kevin Miller, the Tiger Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 25, also spoke to the principals of “leave no trace.”

“Leave an area better than you found it,” he said about what the program teaches the children.

The group not only helped on Earth Day, but they organize hikes together throughout the year. They always take trash bags with them on these hikes to remove litter from nature.

Poland’s two groups, Girl Scout Troop 80591 and Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 9002, joined in the other groups on the activities. The girl scouts cleaned the area around the Slippery Rock Pavilion and the 9002 groups took the Hitchcock Woods.

Kupec and the leaders believe that the event is important. The first year of the program, they only focused on one hillside and they filled four dumpsters of trash.

The program has since expanded to 42 possible locations that the park decided would be

best. Kupec said the event allows for groups to help clean the areas that park crews cannot always reach.

The event is open to the public each year. This year, Kupec and Vigorito had two businesses and four families helped with the program. They also get support from the Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup program.

First-grade students in Alyssa Carbon’s class at C.H. Campbell Elementary School were given an opportunity to express what they would do as President of the United States on April 16.

The students participated in a nationwide art project called “If I Were the President.” The students were selected to be part of the short film which will be featured at the Yerba Buena Center For the Arts in San Francisco.

The goal of the project is to collect the voices of the youth and provide a snapshot of the dreams of this generation.

The short documentary is the brainchild of Anna Sergeeva, an artist, and is based on her project “If I Were the President.”

Sergeeva was inspired by a childhood project.

“In December, I was going through a box of draw ings from when I was 5- or 6-yearsold. I came across a paper that had the prompt ‘If I were the president…’ and I started to wonder how today’s kids would answer that question. It’s not political in nature, it’s more about what kids are thinking and what they dream about the world being. I wanted to get the

“I’ve known Anna since college and this is her first film project and I wanted to help her any way I could,” Teacher said.

Victoria Ramm, formerly of Boardman and now of San Francisco, initiated the students’ participation in the project.

“I’ve known Alyssa since elementary school and I knew her class and C.H. would be the perfect host for filming, and I thought Ohio children may have a different perspective on the subject matter. So I introduced our film group to Alyssa and her students. It‘s a very cool project,” Ramm said.

and asked the students to answer three main questions, “If I were the president…,” what they wanted to be when they grow up and what they thought a perfect world would be like.

Depending on the students’ answers, they also asked follow-up questions.

“Our goal is to collect a half million youth voices, from ages 5-18. We want to share their voices. We want to know their values and dreams of their future and get them to share that with us. Anyone under 18 who is interested in participating in the film can visit ifiwerethepresident.org,” Sergeeva said.

Carbon said she feels this is a great opportunity for her students and she is grateful for all the support the project has received.

“This film is an awesome opportunity for my students to voice their opinions and discover what is going on in the minds of young children not tainted by any media. Their parents had to be comfortable with them participating and they have been

really supportive. Anyone who wanted to be a part of it could choose to be and the majority of my class wanted to be a part of it,” Carbon said.

Carbon also said the children practiced and prepared before their big day.

“I turned it into a writing assignment and the children put their ideas down on paper. I then conferenced with them one on one to make sure they understood what they were saying, and I understood what they wanted to say, and we did practice interviews. I wanted to make sure they could articulate in their first-grade way and make sense. They had great ideas and I wanted them to know how to express them. I am excited to see the finished product,” Carbon said.

The film crew visited C.H. on their journey to visit schools across the country.

“We started in San Francisco, then went to Boulder, Colo., New Orleans and now Ohio. We are in Canfield today and will move onto Girard and Warren. Our projected delivery to the White House is 2020, in time for the next president. Hopefully we can do that in time,” Sergeeva said.
