This event, offered every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s Join the Poland library on June 14 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Basic conversational French Join Ron Saffell for this series of programs and learn French using games and fun activities on June 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the Poland library. This event is for teens and tweens, but adults are welcome.

Reservations are needed.

Business start-up workshop Are you thinking about starting a business in the near future or further down the road? This program at the Poland library on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. will address key topics for beginning a business and will discuss the library’s sources and services for business start-up and beyond. To register, call 330-744-8636 and ask for information services or register online using the events calendar. This event is for adults.

Blood drive There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Poland library on June 8 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and June 21 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Trim a tree for May Decorate an ornament during regular hours throughout May for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree. This event is for children of all ages.

The French lesson at the library received nine attendees with a range of ages.

Instructor Ron Saffell created the lesson for a younger audience, but he adapted it for his older audience. Saffell plans to continue the lessons weekly until June 4.

Ron Saffell organized a couple activities for the group to do. Both activities taught the attendees to identify different object in French. One of the activities had the group split into pairs and have polite, brief conversations in French.

Library offers French lessons to community

The Poland library invited members of the community to their meeting room for lessons in speaking French on May 7.

Retired teacher Ron Saffell taught the lesson on the basics of the French language. The event received nine people of different ages in attendance.

Saffell based his lesson on a younger audience but managed to do adapt his lesson well for an audience of adults a nd a couple younger students. He wanted to give them an introduction course to the basics of the language with a focus on survival skills in a French speaking country. He also gave a crash course into politeness and courtesy when talking to people.

He opened with a greeting in French and then broke down the pronunciation of the word “bonjour,” which means hello.

He said the pronunciation letter-by-letter for the attendees.

He then had the group recite the numbers from 1-10.

Following that, they worked on word order and the gender

of objects. In French, adjectives always follow the object and each object has a different ending depending on whether it is a masculine or feminine word.

The group participated in an activity where they grabbed different items t hat Saffell placed around the room.

T hey gave t hem back to Saffell and said each object w it h proper pronunciation in French. They then learned how to present the objects to each other and take them in a polite fashion.

They also worked on saying phrases for basic survival, such as “W here is the bathroom?” and “how do I get to...”

They learned left and right as well as the days of the week.

They ended the lesson with a small conversation in French amongst themselves.

The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s Stadium Parking Lot at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sake items are welcome. There are 50 spaces available. The cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 on June 1. Holy Family students in grades K-5 also participate in Junior Achievement. Volunteers come into the classroom once a week for five weeks for grade appropriate financial literacy lessons.

Library program celebrates the woman suffrage movement

The Poland library hosted the “Book Review and Soup and Salad Too” program on April 15 as a fundraiser for the Springfield Capital Campaign.

T he c om m it te e for t he campaign has created events throughout the year to reach their goal of $100,000 to benefit the Springfield library. They brought in Rochester City Historian Christine Ridarsky to give a presentation on the book that she coedited, “Susan B. Anthony and the Struggle For Equal Rights.”

Committee member Judy Kovalan said that the group wanted to have a speaker for an event and she suggested her niece, Ridarsky. Ridarsky is a graduate of Springfield High School and often visited the Springfield library as a child.

Her great aunt and Kovalan both worked at the library. She said she is excited to see it expand.

Her interest in women’s history comes from having strong women in her life. She knew her great grandmother well and joked that she was “full of hell and spitfire.” These strong women in her life led her to look at the stories of strong women in history, such as Susan B. Anthony, who fought for women’s right to vote.

She works closely with the history of Anthony and the women’s suffrage movement since she is a historian in Rochester, Anthony’s hometown. She said she is gearing up for 2020, the 100th year anniversary of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote, the 200th anniversary of Anthony’s birth and the 50th anniversary of the Susan B. Anthony House, a museum dedicated to Anthony.

While introducing herself before her introduction, she said that her love for history can be traced back to the Poland library. When in middle school, she participated in National History Day’s essay contest twice and did her research at the library. One of the essays ex-

Her presentation focused on the book she coedited, which was a book of seven essays from a conference at the University of Rochester that she cochaired to commemorate the anniversary of Anthony’s death in 1906.

She explored several of the essays, placing them neatly in the context of the history of the time. After the essays, she gave information on other important women of Anthony’s time, including Martha Matilda Harper, Abigail Bush and Anthony’s sister Mary. Then, she showed pictures from Rochester relating to Anthony and her museum. She answered questions from the attendees after she presented.

She brought pins and pamphlets with her from the Susan B. Anthony House, as well as a

number of large posters. These posters had information detailing the history of women’s right to vote and giving information about women of the time.

The committee also invited representatives from the local Upton House in Warren. The Upton House, a temporary center for the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1903, is the historic landmark of Harriet Taylor Upton’s home.

Upton, a close colleague of Anthony’s, worked to gain women’s right to vote. The group spoke about the local history the area has in the movement and had informational pamphlets about the house.

The event also featured two raffles, a 50/50 and basket raffle. Dino’s Restaurant catered the event and provided soup and salad.

Mr. Zapko married the former Sharon S. Skodacek on April 20, 1968, at St. John Lutheran Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Zapko was a Licensed Practical Nurse for St. Elizabeth Hospital and Meridian Arms Living Center in Youngstown until she retired in 2005.

Mr. Zapko was a pharmacist for 40 years at St. Elizabeth Hospital until he retired in 2006. He is a lifetime member of the Western Reserve Fish & Game Association and the National Rifle Association. an Church in Austintown, where they are The couple are members of Zion Luther- active in activities and committees.
