Pat ierno cont inued w it h such topics as public education funding in Ohio; assisting in the cost of college for students; the state’s heroin crisis, job creation and environmental challenges Ohio is facing. Patierno then opened the floor to audience members to ask questions. A majority of the questions dealt with the drug crisis in Ohio and state testing. Schiavoni was also asked his thoughts on why the county was so politically divided. To end the town hall, Patierno lightened it up a bit and asked Schiavoni what he likes to do for fun, his favorite TV show and one thing people might not know about him. “Well, the one thing people might not know about me is that I boxed in Golden Gloves in high school,” Schiavoni answered. Patierno wrapped up the session by thanking Schiavoni for participating in the event. “Thank you for being here with us today. We appreciate your time,” Patierno said.
Canfield High School’s student-run newspaper, “The Cardinal,” organized a live town hall event and invited democratic candidate for Ohio governor Joe Schiavoni to participate at the school on April 7. Schiavoni, who is currently the minority leader in the Ohio State Senate, announced his candidacy on March 1 of this year. Sophomore Vincent Patierno moderated the town-hall event, with students and teachers having the opportunity to ask questions on topics of their concern. The questions were structured around education-based issues and other matters concerning the state of Ohio. Patierno welcomed Sen. Schiavoni, students and staff to the event. “Good afternoon. April 7. Patierno started by asking Schiavoni why students should be interested at this time in their lives. “The future job market is dictated by policies that are being drafted now. I think students need to think about what matters now and what matters in the future,” Schiavoni said. Throughout the town hall event, Patierno covered many topics with Schiavoni, including state standardized testing and what the testing atmosphere would be like under a Schiavoni administration and House Bill 610, which deals with school choice for federal funding for schools. Patierno asked Schiavoni what he would do to fix the school system. “I think we need to have accountability and transparency Neighbors | Abby Slanker for all schools. Hispanic culture celebrated at Ursuline High School By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ursuline High School celebrated Hispanic culture during the third annual Fiesta de las Americas night on April 26 with more than 450 people joining them. This year, the students and Senora Paulina Montaldo wanted to make the event better than the last two years. Current Spanish Club President Marie Bond met with Montaldo a few times over the summer of 2016 to start planning and coming up with ideas for the event. “Last year we thought we had a really good outcome and we
wanted to top that this year. We knew that it would take a lot of hard work and a lot of time, so we just tried our best to put in the effort to make sure that this was as successful, and hopefully even more, as last year,” said emcee Vince Venzeio. St udent s f rom Ca n f ield, Boardman, Poland, Mooney and even Youngstown State University attended the event. Member s f rom t he ot her schools’ Spanish Clubs were invited to attend. “It’ll be a fun night. I’m thankful for all the hard work the everyone has put in,” said emcee Frank Sobnosky. Last year, around 300 people
attended the event, and the UHS Spanish Club anticipated even more to attend this year. Every year, word of the event gets around more and the number of guests who attend grows. ”There’s been a lot of people involved. We’ve been working on it for months,” said upcoming Spanish Club President Seamus Chrystal. Food was donated from Sr. Jalepeno, families of Ursuline students and Chrystal Catering. Two alpacas were brought in by Ursuline High School alumni, Cor and Joyce Kester, that the students were able to look at and pet. The Labra Bros, a local band,
has been performing for the event all three years. The Spanish Club is working to make the event more of a community event, rather than just the schools. “We have a lot of underclassmen who have become invested, this year especially. So we hope as we three graduate they’ll be able to carry it on,” said Bond. In an effort to promote the learning of Spanish and the Hispanic culture, Senora Paulina Montaldo will teach a Spanish summer camp at Ursuline High School July 17-21 for children in third through eighthgrade.

With some sunshine peaking through the clouds, C.H. Campbell Elementary School st udent s celebrated t he school’s annual Beach Day on April 13. In the cafeteria, which was decorated with beach balls hanging from the ceiling, ta-
bles were cleared away and students enjoyed a picnic-style lunch on their own beach towels and blankets. The students were able to dress in brightly-colored beachwear for the day. Many students got into the spirit of the day by wearing shorts, sun hats, sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts, Hawaiian leis, straw hats, baseball hats, swim trunks, visors, hula
skirts and some even had flowers in their hair. “Beach Day brings in Spring for us. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The kids enjoy it because they get to wear clothes they usually aren’t permitted to wear, so they like that. Any break from their regular routine, and the chance to sit on the floor to eat lunch, is really fun for them,”
said CHC Principal Travis Lavery. In addition to decorating the cafeteria, the PTO provided popsicles for the children as a special treat to enjoy after they had eaten lunch. Following lunch, the students soaked up as much sunshine as they could during recess on the school’s playground.

Hilltop Elementary School students were dressed to the nines for the school’s annual Fun in the Sun Day on April 13. Fun in the Sun Day is a celebration of spring that takes place every year during each grade level’s lunch period the day before spring break begins. The st udents dressed in bright, tropical clothes and accessories, as if they were enjoying a day at the beach, to cel-
ebrate the special day. Students wore brightly-colored shirts, shorts and skirts and accessorized with Hawaiian leis, straw hats, sandals, sunglasses, sun hats, visors, ball caps and many girls wore tropical flowers in their hair. The students celebrated spring with a picnic-style lunch in the cafeteria, during which students spread out beach towels and blankets they had brought from home. After they were finished with their lunch, the students were
treated to push-ups provided by the school’s PTO. As part of the celebration, instead of going outside for recess, the students were ushered into the gym where a dance party was waiting for them with music by D.J. Rick Comray, also provided by the PTO. Each grade level had a half an hour to dance to several popular songs chosen by the DJ and also by request from the students. Several PTO volunteers helped with each grade level’s lunch and dance party.

C.H. Campbell Elementary School first-grade students presented “The Bear Went Over the Mountain - A Musical Journey of Friendship and Adventure” by John Jacobson and John Higgins at the Canfield High School on April 10. The students, under the direction of C.H. Campbell music teacher Michael Fay, welcomed family and friends to travel on their adventure with them. In the story, there lived a bear with many friends, but he was restless. He thought surely there was more to life than eating honey and berries, and sleeping the winter away. He thought it was
time to expand his horizons. One day Da Bear decides this is the day and begins his journey up the mountain in search of adventure and to see what he could see. Audience members were invited along to see what Da Bear and his animal buddies discover. “Thank you for being here tonight and thank you for bringing your children here tonight for this great show. They are wonderful children and it is a blessing to teach them every day. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of their musical development and education. So, without further adieu, we present ‘The Bear Went Over the Mountain,” Fay said as he welcomed the audience. With students dressed up in
costume as such forest animals as deer, bunnies, chipmunks, ducks, beavers, turkeys, bobcats, raccoons, bats, chicks, squirrels, skunks and opossums, the program opened with “Good Morning,” followed by scene one. The second song was “This is The Day,” followed by scene two. The students then all sang “Sing Your Own Song” and went into scene three. The students gathered together on stage to sing “Beware” before continuing the program with scene four. The first-graders then sang “Forever.” Scene five followed the performance. Scene six closed the show, with everyone joining in to sing “Reprise: This is The Day.”

He spoke on the transition from analog to digital services, which should be completed in a few months. Don Barry spoke on what he does as a volunteer reader and noted that they are always looking for volunteer readers. YRRS operates over the SCA (sideband) of WYSU-FM, and is a private, non-profit station serving the print impaired. The YRRS broadcasts print materials which are not otherwise accessible to its listeners. These services are provided in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula Counties, as well as areas of western Pennsylvania. If you feel you qualify or would like to volunteer your services, they can be contacted at 330-759-0100 or 800-452-2525, or through their website at www.goodwillyoungstown.org.
