Resident becomes Queen of Poland for a day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Life-long Poland resident Sara Hill-Strock became the Queen of Poland on May 1. Hill-Strock, a 1946 graduate of Poland, got a surprise at Shepherd of the Valley from Poland Seminary High School band members, cheerleaders and football players. The students put on a small parade, performed a few cheers and enjoyed a lunch for Hill-Strock, who was brought to tears of joy when she saw what was happening. Shepherd of the Valley activities director Lisa Slipkovich started planning the special surprise about four months ago. Slipkovich asks residents three questions to get an idea of what they would enjoy doing. When Slipkovich contacted the high school, they were completely on board and willing to help out with whatever was needed. Principal Kevin Snyder worked with the football
coach, cheerleading advisor and band instructor to come up with something to help out Slipkovich. “Sara is a huge, huge Poland fan. You get her talking and she could go on and on,” said Slipkovich. Hill-Strock had an idea something was happening when she was told the activities department had planned for her to get her hair done. Then when she came down for breakfast, she noticed the dining area was adorned with Poland colors and decorations. As Hill-Strock watched the parade that was happening just for her, one of the cheerleaders brought over her pom-poms and gave them to Hill-Strock. She cheered along with the students as the band played songs and the cheerleaders performed cheers. “This is such a great thing, for us to be here is such an aweNeighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci some idea. The celebration ended with a lunch with Hill-Strock’s family, her friends, the Poland students and the residents and staff of Shepherd of the Valley. There were pictures the Poland Seminary High School yearbook advisor found from when HillStrock attended Poland and sent to Slipkovich. Those pictures were then blown up and placed around the room and Hill-Strock was given the opportunity to keep those photos when the celebration was over. “I think it’s a nice thing for residents, for staff morale,” said Slipkovich. “This is really what I wanted for her.”

Students celebrate Earth Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland North Preschool students got down and dirty for their Earth Day celebration on April 20 and 21. The activities the students participated in consisted of using materials that were recyclable or transforming an old object into something new. Teachers Samantha Cox and Joy Bucci worked with their students to make the activities a success. Cox and her students made water paints by soaking old markers in water, they made f lowers out of old newspaper and melted s’mores using the sun and heat outside. The chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers were put into an empty pizza box with foil that reflected the sun onto the snacks. After sitting out most of the day, the snacks were melted and the children enjoyed s’mores without needing a campfire. The students in Bucci’s class spent some time outside planting their own flowers to grow outside. They also made their “mark” on the Earth by putting their handprints and a cut-out character of themselves on an Earth made out of construction paper. All of the students learned different ways they could help keep the Earth clean and green while having fun and getting a little messy.

Families find adventure in the sea for science night By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary second-grade students explored the sea with their families during the Family Science Night on April 11 and 12. The event was split into two nights to allow all of the secondgraders and their families to attend without being too crowded. Families spent time at three different stations throughout
the night; inside the ocean bubble in the gymnasium, in classrooms to hear a story and make a shark craft and enjoy a dinner of fish sticks and french fries. Inside the ocean bubble, the families watched a PowerPoint and learned about sharks, coral reef and the aquarium at Poland Union. The children voted on what topic they wanted to learn about first, second and third. While one group was in the
ocean bubble, another was eating a dinner of fish sticks, tater tots, chips and fish-shaped crackers, a version of fish and chips. The third group of families went into two classrooms to listen to a story and make a shark craft. The children made sharks out of construction paper and a paper plate for the mouth and teeth. Everyone had the chance to visit the aquarium that the students help take care of in the
Union library. Principal Mike Masucci hosts different family nights for each grade level in Union Elementary. This gives an opportunity for the students to bring their families back into the building and while spending a fun night together. The majority of the students enjoying coming back to the school to show their families what they work on during class time.

cup. The children had to guess what would happen to the candies in each experiment. Everyone was required to go outside for the last experiment, which consisted of using a roll of Mentos, a bag of Nerds jelly beans and two 2-litres of
Diet Coke. The children took a step back and watched as the Mentos were poured into the Diet Coke and the carbonation caused the Diet Coke to shoot several feet into the air. Before the jelly beans were poured in the bottle, the children had to guess what candy would make the Diet Coke fizz the most; many of them guessed the jelly beans. Although the jelly
beans made the Diet Coke fizz, the Mentos made the Diet Coke shoot higher. All of the children went home with a packet of all of the experiments they did that consisted of instructions on how to do the experiment, what should happen and why it happened. The program showed how science happens every day and that it can be fun to learn.
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www. youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Mia Acevedo and Rocco Turk put together on Easter Bunny as a craft during the Dinner with the Easter Bunny at Boardman Park on April 5.
Families spend night with Easter Bunny
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children and their families hopped to Boardman Park to spend an evening together with the Easter Bunny. The two-night event started in 2013 and is an annual tradition for some families. Dinner with the Easter Bunny was hosted on April 5 and 6 with both of the nights sold out. “It’s a great holiday, fun event for families to enjoy taking a picture with the Easter Bunny, doing some crafts, having dinner and they get to watch ‘Peter Cottontail,’” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park recreation director. Families enjoyed a dinner of chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, fishsticks, vegetables, bread and butter, applesauce, dessert and of course carrots. “Peter Cottontail” played on the
screen for the families to watch as they ate their dinner. The Easter Bunny was available for pictures and the guests who took a picture with the bunny were able to take home a hard copy at the end of the night. One of the favorite parts of the night was the bunny, Oreo, who was brought in by a 4-H member. The families had the opportunity to pet Oreo and talk to the 4-H members who were there. “It’s part of the parks mission of the diversity of programming for families in the community,” said McCallum. There were tables full of crafts the children could make. The children colored bunny ears, made a foam bunny and plenty of others that they could take home with them. The next Boardman Park event with be the Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion show on May 7.
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. For further details, contact Donna Mowrey at 330-207-9630 or Nancy Felton at 330-533-2712.
