Motor On for RJM benefit to be May 22 Former chef Robert Melone worked at various restaurants throughout the area for 17 years before a terrible motorcycle accident paralyzed him from the chest down in September 2012.

He is in need of assistance in affording a handicapped converted van to

help him have transportation to and from his doctor’s appointments and rehabilitation training in Cleveland.

To further this cause, the second annual Motor On for RJM (Robert John Melone) Benefit Dinner will take place on May 22 at Boardman High School from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be aqcuired by contacting Roslyn Schmidt at 330-360-1904 or Scarsella’s Restaurant at 330-7880806. The event will be catered by Scarsella’s and Mama Vickie Scarsella, and carry out will be available.

Fundraiser for “The Veteran’s Program” Methodist Community Center recently announced that on May 26 (all day) there will be a Fundraiser for “The Veterans Program” offered

by Applebee’s Restaurant. Both in Boardman and Niles, Applebee’s will donate 10 percent of your food bill to the MCC Veterans Program.

You must have a flyer to give to your server (these cannot be passed out at the Applebee’s Restaurants).

Houston named to Dean’s High Honors Marietta College’s Mitchell Houston of Boardman has been named to the Spring 2016 Dean’s High Honors List. Any full-time Marietta College student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average of 3.75 or better in a given semester is recognized as a Dean’s High Honors List student for that semester.

Host families needed The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States.

Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. Students become Fourth-Grade Foresters

The Boardman Lions Club visited all of the fourth-grade cl a s s e s i n t he Boa rd m a n School District on April 29 as part of t heir Fourt h-Grade Foresters program.

Two representatives from t he Boa rdma n Lions Club, Kat hy Col l i ns a nd K r isten Dailey, came to Robinwood Lane Elementary to give the students a lesson about Arbor Day and to give them a special gift at the end of the presentation. Collins started out her presentation by talking about the Boardman Lions Club and the Fourth-Grade Foresters program.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on is the FourthGrade Foresters project,” said Collins.

students a little bit of history about Arbor Day. Arbor Day started in 1872 - 144 years ago - in the state of Nebraska. The Secretary of Agriculture, Grover Cleveland, was approached by a journalist who noticed the trees were becoming scarce. Nebraska then decided they were going to plant one million trees.

Each person, by the time they reach the end of their lives, uses four full trees worth of supplies that are made from that material. Looking at this statistic helps encourage people to plant more trees.

Boardman Glenwood H.O.P.E. Club receives Miracle-Gro grant Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Planet Earth) Club recently received a grant from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company to help continue the development of their courtyard garden project. The $1,500 grant was part of the company’s GRO1000 initiative, which is designed to create 1,000 gardens and pollinator habitats throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018, to coincide with the Company’s 150th Anniversary. Glenwood was the only Ohio School to receive

the grant.

The H.O.P.E. Club received the GRO1000 Grassroots Grant and plans to use the money to further expand their existing wildf lower garden as well as develop space for growing edible gardens. Ideally, Glenwood plans to divide their courtyard into four sections, two for pollinator habitats and two for food. The club would like to see the food produced go towards supplementing school lunches, supplying area restaurants and local food banks.

Students who are members of

the H.O.P.E. Club will primarily maintain the gardens, but all students will have access.

“We were thrilled to receive the grant support for the continued development of our butterfly and school gardens,” said Laura Kibby, one of H.O.P.E.’s advisors, “It is our hope that through the development of this habitat, we can bring attention to the importance of our local ecosystem and agriculture while educating our students and community about the benefits of pollinators and local food sources.”

First Night Youngstown announces competition First Night Youngstown is calling for local and regional artists to participate in the annual design competition of its New Year’s Eve events admission button.

The winning artist will be promoted at all press events. The artist will also be a celebrity guest in the Downtown Christmas holiday parade and tree-lighting event.

The button series is traditionally intended to celebrate downtown Youngstown’s unique historic buildings and architecture. Buttons may be designed using any medium and then digitally saved as a .jpeg. Artists should depict Youngstown in a manner that highlights New Year’s Eve, no champagne glasses or images of drinking alcohol; First Night events are family-friendly. The design must include the phrase “First Night Youngstown 2017.” Interested artists should call 330-744-9966 or email firstnightyoungstown@gamil.com. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Each year, admission buttons provide entry to all First Night events on New Year’s Eve in downtown Youngstown, sold at $5 and $10 each.

Literacy fundraiser Join the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County for a Literary Society fundraising event at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland at 6 p.m. on June 9. Guests are asked to wear their favorite little black dress and bring a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with other attendees. Students win placemat contest Eight students out of 780 entries from area Mahoning County public, private and parochial schools won the Recycling Division of Mahoning County Green Team’s 2016 poster contest. Each poster described a recycling or anti-litter theme.

All of the first place posters were made into placemats to be used at area restaurants and non-profit organizations’ special meals. On May 12, the students’ winning achievements were rewarded by the Mahon-

ing County Commissioners at the county courthouse building.

Dominion gave each winner $25, and certificates from the Green Team were given to the winning students.

Presentation teaches families about Internet danger

Mahoning County Career and Technial Center hosted a Digital Danger presentation on April 19.

Digital Danger is an Ohio program that provides digital safety training to parents, children and students all around the Ohio area. Presenters travel around Ohio to teach people about the prevention of Internet related crimes.

Kelley Mills, an Austintown guidance counselor, helped set up the event. Mills started the event by giving a brief introduction of what is going to be discussed, then proceeded to tell the guests to use the clickers

they received to answer a few questions. Some of the questions that were asked prior to the presentation were asked again after to see what the guests learned.

Mandy Scrocco, a Boardman elementary school counselor, was next to speak. She talked about how elementary counselors help students with various issues and challenges they may be dealing with.

Judge Theresa Dellick took the stage after Scrocco and spoke a little about what she sees in juvenile court dealing with Internet danger.

Elementary students at Market Street couldn’t wait for April 28. That was the day the chicks they were waiting for were supposed to hatch. It was all part of an elaborate STEM activity, sponsored by the PTA at Market Street Elementary. They started on April 6, with seven eggs in a carefully monitored incubator.Every day the children had a lesson with a plastic egg prop that showed the step-by-step development of a chick. The display case is in the main hallway, so kindergarten through fourth-graders could check daily on the chick’s progress. The Lifestyle of Chicken Display is in its third year.

After hatching, the new chicks stayed in the display case for a week before they were returned to a local farm. Every class had the opportunity to meet with the chicks up-close before their return. Pictured is the display case with seven fertilized eggs centered in an incubator.

Robinwood Lane and West Boulevard elementary schools were named a “High Performing School of Honor,” while West also earned “School of Promise.” This is the third year in a row for West to attain each of those awards. These honors were based on the school’s 2014-2015 Ohio School Report Card in student reading and math performance.

dia. That’s my message today, simply by what we post can we open doors for ourselves, can we help our kids open doors based on what we post and can we make sure that those doors do not close based on what they post,” Conrad told the audience.

Stanko and Conrad gave tips and tricks to help parents keep their children out of Internet danger. The two presenters told

guests about anonymous apps and apps that are created to look like something they are not.

At the end of the night, the parents, counselors and students walked away with more knowledge about Internet danger and ways to prevent it and stay out of it. The night consisted of several stories, experiences and advice that would help benefit those who listened.

Boardman track finishes regular season on high note The Boardman boys track team concluded the 2016 regular season and celebrated Senior Night with a 106-40-26 victory over Ashtabula Lakeside and Youngstown East on May 3.

The 4x400 relay team of seniors Lucas, Hadley, Santilli and Kellam closed the meet with a first place finish.

In the field events, senior Jason Jama won the shot put, with junior George Wallace in second, senior Markese Haynes in third and sophomore Steven Amstutz fourth. Wallace placed first in the discus with senior Shawn Devlin in second and Haynes third. Junior Vi Trihn Luu took second in the pole vault with Moradian third and junior Don Lewis in fourth. In the high jump, Justice Jama took first and then placed first in the long jump with Torres in fourth.

Boys track named AAC Runners-Up

The Boardman boys track team finished as AAC RunnersUp for the 2016 season following the championship meet on May 10 at Austintown Fitch High School.

Senior Brendon Lucas placed first in the 100, 200 and 400, setting a league meet record in the 400 at 49.23 which is .03 off from the Boardman High School record by Dayne Hammond.

Seniors Nick Cessna and Jacob Rauschenberg placed fifth and eighth in the 110 hurdles and was third and seventh in the 300 hurdles. Junior Kobe Adu-Poku was fourth in the 400, junior Chris Butler was fourth in the 800 and senior Tyler Kellam placed fifth in the 800, as well.

Junior George Wallace placed fifth in the discus and was also fifth in the shot put. Senior Jason Jama finished second overall in shot. Sophomore Justice Jama placed third in the high jump and sixth in the long jump with Torres placing seventh in long jump as well.

Junior Richard Fisher placed fourth in the pole vault and sixth in the high jump, and junior Don Lewis placed sixth in pole vault.

Happily Ever After Storkel-Vennitti wedding plans are announced The parents of the bride-elect, William and Teri Storkel of Poland, are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Kelly Storkel of Poland, and Giorgio Vennitti of Warren.

His parents are Carl and Micaela Vennitti of Warren.

The wedding ceremony will take place May 28 at St. Mary Church, and a reception will follow at Sorrento’s Banquet Hall, both in Warren.

Invitations will be issued for both events.

Miss Storkel earned an accounting degree from Youngstown State University and is employed as a senior staff accountant at VEC Inc. in Girard.

The future groom works as plant manager of Patriot Water Treatment in Warren.

Kirsten Gibson, Michael Hoelzel are engaged Announcing their engagement and upcoming wedding are Kirsten Gibson and Michael Hoelzel, both of Columbus.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Robert Gibson and Dawn Gibson, both of Columbus.

Robert and Michelle Hoelzel of Canfield are parents of the prospective groom.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fajack of Youngstown celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a family dinner April 10 at the home of their son and his fiancée, Ralph Fajack and Roni Williams of Boardman. Other children and their spouses who hosted the festivity are Michele and Gary Nicholson of Painesville, Ohio, and Sonja and Scott Morton of Canal Fulton, Ohio.

Grandchildren are Katie Noble, Nick Fajack, Liz Noble, Jacob Morton and Zach Morton. Stepgrandchildren are Tiffany (Ron) Spaller, Mike (Robin) Arocho and Chris (Michelle) Arocho.

There also are six step great-grandchildren.

The former JoAnne Pallante and Mr. Fajack were married April 7, 1956, the first couple to be married at St. Christine Church.

The couple are members of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church.

Mr. Fajack worked 33 years for the Youngstown Police Department and retired in 1960 as a detective. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He served in the U.S. Air Force Air Police for four years, and coached Little League baseball.

Mrs. Fajack was an antique dealer and crafter

for many years and retired in 2014. She hosted shows and sold items in various shops in the area. She also was an adult-educator in the arts and her rug hooking designs and wall hangings have been featured in magazines and newspapers. She has been a writer for an online magazine for the past five years. She also has a degree in creative writing and is certified in computer science working on websites and graphics.

The couple both graduated from the University of Akron. The bride-elect earned a degree in nursing, and is employed as a registered nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Her fiance earned a degree in mechanical engineering, and is employed as a mechanical engineer for Honda of America Manufacturing in Marysville, Ohio.

Fajacks honored at dinner for 60th anniversary

Eric and Susan Glosser and Denise Burns and James Phillis are announcing the engagement of their children, Chelsea Nicole Glosser and Tyler Steven Burns. All are of Poland.

Victory Christian Center in Coitsville will be the setting of the couple’s June 25 wedding.

Miss Glosser earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University. She is a science teacher for Campbell City Schools.

The prospective groom served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He is attending YSU and studying electrical engineering.
