CUMP students enjoy Lil Sprouts Cooking Class By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Students at the Canfield United Methodist Preschool had a chance to put their chef hats and aprons on for the school’s monthly Lil Sprouts Cooking Class on April 29. The Li l Sprouts Cook ing Class, by Healthy Hands Cooking, is an enrichment program offered by the school, while partnering with EduKitchen, a local company run by Healthy Hands Cooking Certified Instructor Rachel D’Onofrio. “Healthy Hands Cooking and EduKitchen’s mission is to fight childhood obesity and teach children about nutrition and healthy cooking. If we start at this young age, it will instill good and healthy eating habits in the children and teach them to cook healthy foods for themselves. I try to choose dishes the children can easily make at home with Mom and Dad,” D’Onofrio said. The theme of the day was “Grow it in a Garden,” which focused on homegrown vegeta-

bles. D’Onofrio began the program by showing the children several raw vegetables and giving them a chance to feel and smell the vegetables by passing them around the circle. She showed them lemons, sweet peppers, green onions, green leaf lettuce, tomatoes and carrots. D’Onofrio then read the book “Growing Vegetable Soup” to the students. D’Onofrio told the children they, too, would be able to plant a vegetable as she moved them to a table full of small cups filled with dirt. She explained that the children would plant green bean seeds in the cups and would be able to take them home and eventually transplant them to their own garden. She played a song which gave instructions on how to plant the seeds so the children would know each step in planting. W hen t he chi ldren were finished planting their seeds, D’Onofrio announced they were going to make vegetable stir fry with brown rice. While she already had the rice cook-

ing, D’Onofrio asked for volunteers who wanted to practice their cutting skills to help cut some vegetables for the stir fry. When the cutting was done, D’Onofrio loaded up her skillet with vegetables and also added chick peas, soy sauce and seasonings. While the vegetables cooked, D’Onofrio read the children “From the Garden.” With the vegetables sizzling

in the skillet, D’Onofrio declared to the students that the vegetable stir fry was ready and promptly served it with rice to each child, much to their delight. “I see lots of kids eating vegetables. Who is trying something today that they have never tried before?” D’Onofrio asked the children, with many answering that, yes, they did try something they had never eaten before.

Tim and Melissa Styranec, with their son Tim Jr., a Canfield Village Middle School fifth-grader, visited the school’s Walk for Diabetes on May 11. The school is donating the money collected from its walk to the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, organized by Styranec.

Carver. “Our Walk for Diabetes is a symbolic walk to find a cure for diabetes. The students give up their time and they do a great job and have a great attitude about it. They understand the meaning behind it and realize what a great cause it is,” Tinkey said. Styranec stressed that the CVMS Walk for Diabetes and the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation are also about awareness. “Both these walks raise funds for diabetes, which is so important, but equally important is they will both raise awareness

for diabetes. Many people don’t know the facts behind the disease, and part of our focus is to educate people about the disease. For example, the cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown and there is no cure and 30,000 children, teens and young adults in the U.S. are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each year. People with Type 1 diabetes must test their blood sugar several times a day and take multiple shots of insulin just to stay alive. Those are the type of facts we want people to know, and we think our walks will help inform people of such important information,” Styranec said.

Ca nf ield Vi l lage Midd le School students participated in a Walk for Diabetes the week of May 9. All students in grades fifth through eighth used their gym class times to walk laps around the gym or the track. The school collected donations during the week which were then given to the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, to take place at the Youngstown State University Watts Center on May 21. Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is being organized by Tim Styranec, whose son is a CVMS student. “We are very excited about CVMS walking for diabetes and donating the money they collect to the Mahoning Valley Walk Benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. It is so nice of them to think of us and help us raise funds. Juvenile diabetes, or Type 1 diabetes, is tough for kids and it is tough on their families, too. The money raised here at the school and at our walk at YSU will be used to fund research to find better treatments and a cure for Type 1 diabetes,” Styranec said. The CVMS Walk for Diabetes was organized by school nurse Regina Reynolds, and carried out by physical education teachers Bob Tinkey and Caitlyn

More than 300 volunteers came together to help each other and work together to clean the various locations of Mill Creek MetroParks. The volunteers are given bags and the materials necessary to help pick up the litter. The boys in Troop 184 of Austintown were eager to help clean up. They got to spend the morning outside with each other and getting dirty while they cleaned up. Mill Creek MetroParks was filled with boys, girls, troop leaders and parents who took time out of their day to help their community park look better. Each year the volunteers come to the park and help out no matter if its sunny or rainy. Numerous bags are filled with random items that don’t belong in the park. The Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Clean-up brought fort h t heir support for t he MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup and those who volunteered. Tables were set up at Ford Nature Center where representatives from Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks were available for any information regarding the clean-up.

CHC first-graders embark on musical journey By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The first-grade students of C.H. Campbell Elementary School presented “The Bear Went Over the Mountain - A Musical Journey of Friendship and Adventure” by John Jacobson and John Higgins on April 25. The students, under the direction of C.H. Campbell music teacher Michael Fay, welcomed family and friends to travel on

their adventure with them. In the story, there lived a bear with many friends, but he was restless. He thought surely there was more to life than eating honey and berries, and sleeping the winter away. He thought it was time to expand his horizons. One day Da Bear decides this is the day and begins his journey up the mountain in search of adventure and to see what he could see. Audience

members were invited along to see what Da Bear and his animal buddies discover. With students dressed up in costume as such animals as rabbits, chipmunks, deer, ducks, beavers, turkeys, bobcats, raccoons, bats, squirrels, a skunk and opossum, the program opened with “Good Morning,” followed by scene one. The second song was “This is The Day,” followed by scene

two. The students then all sang “Sing Your Own Song” and went into scene three. The students gathered together on stage to sing “Beware” before continuing the program with scene four. The first-graders then sang “Forever.” Scene five followed the performance. Scene six closed the show, with everyone joining in to sing “Reprise: This is The Day.”

Sophomores Kate Jenkins and Taryn Rothbauer presented more than $2,000 to the Canfield School Board for the formation of the first ever Canfield Art Club. The students have written letters to community organizations seeking the funding needed to start the club. In addition, Jenkins has sold close to $500 of her original artwork, which has been made into notecards, with all proceeds being donated to the school. The Junior Women’s League of Canfield joined the growing list of donors when they presented a $1,000 check during the April Board of Education meeting. Pure Cycle to host third annual Cycle for a Cure Pure Cycle Studio will host its third annual Cycle for a Cure, a five hour spin-a-thon to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis. This year’s event will be hosted at the Canfield Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on May 22. All proceeds benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Buckeye Chapter. Cycle for a Cure was founded by Pure Cycle owner Shelly Colucci and cyclist David Fox. Next fall, Fox and his wife, Koreen Burrow, will complete their mission to ride a Bike MS event in every state. Bike MS cycling events are two-day, 150-mile rides to raise money for MS research and services. Burrow was diagnosed with MS when she was 26. Riders participating in Cycle for a Cure donate $20 per hour during the five-hour cycling event, with 60 bikes allotted for each hour. Instructors take turns team teaching spin classes every hour. Pure Cycle hosted prior events at their studio in Canfield, but after the success of last year’s Cycle for

a Cure, the studio is taking it on the road to the Fairgrounds. “The amount of support we continue to receive from the community is amazing,” said i nst r uctor Missy Sch m it t. “We’ve had donations of food and Chinese auction items from local businesses as well as monetary donations to help cover our costs. Last year we raised over $10,000, we’re hoping to raise more this year. These funds will go with the 40+ Pure Cycle group of cyclists who will ride in the Bike Ms: Buckeye Breakaway this summer.” Other activities include free children “identikits” provided by the Canfield Police Department and free bike safety course, music by DJ Dynomyte, face painting, bounce house, hundreds of Chinese auction items and a chance to win two new bikes courtesy of Trailside Cycling and Austintown Glenwood Cycle. Volunteers will serve food and refreshments. Cycle for a Cure is free to attend. To stay updated on event details, follow Pure Cycle on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
