The event includes live entertainment, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, bake sale and Gorantz Kidz Kandy Korner.
Host families needed The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This lifechanging experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. If you are interested in hosting a teen, contact Greg at 330-770-1440. For more information, visit ulsterprojectmv.com.

Students take mini field trip to the library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland North Preschool students headed to the library on April 19 for story time and a craft. Joy Bucci’s 2- and 3-year-olds made a trip to the Poland library for a change in their regular class day. The students got dropped of at the library and participated in a craft, story time and other activities with Poland librarian Vikki Peck. The students started off with a craft and made a chicken out of construction paper, crayons and feathers. The chicken fit into the theme of the story time that Peck led afterwards. The
students could either take home their chicken craft or put it on the tree that was in the library. When the students finished their craft, they moved into another room for story time. Peck began story time with the “Hands go up, Hands go down” song, to the tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” The books Peck read were about animals that live on farms, like the chicken the students made. “Cock-adoodle-moo,” by Bernard Most. Story time ended with the students singing the song “Old McDonald.” Bucci and her students enjoyed the nice day by walking Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci back to their school after their Students in Joy Bucci’s spent their morning at the Poland library making story time activities. chicks and listening to stories on April 19.

Children grow a ‘lichen’ to moss pets By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fellows Riverside Garden hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on April 21. Mandy Smith led the class and taught the children all about moss, algae and lichen. After a brief introduction, the children went outside into the garden to find different kinds of moss, algae and lichen. There were stones and cement ground covered with moss, trees covered with lichen and wet stones from the fountain covered with algae. The children learned how each type of plant is beneficial to the environment and how they are created. The children were eager to have the chance to go outside and be able to look and touch the different plants they were learning about. “Marimo moss come from lakes in Japan and what happens is water moves back and forth and it takes the algae and starts to shape it round. People in Japan have had Marimo moss pets for hundreds of years and they can live for hundreds of years,” said Smith. At the end of the class, each of the children got to make a little home for their own Marimo moss See MOSS, Page 7

Edison Landscape and Deck Lighting hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 29 in celebration of the newest division, the Garden Boutique. O w ner s, E d a nd Daw n Wojciechowski, opened Edison Landscape and Deck Lighting more than 14 years ago and recently added the Garden Bou-
tique. The first three divisions that Edison Landscape specialized in were landscaping, landscape lighting and holiday lighting. “We tried to make it that t her e’s not h i ng el s e l i ke t h i s a n y w he r e,” s a id E d Wojciechowski. The outside garden area consists of pottery, plants and various other products for sale. The products were displayed in a
way that looked like someone’s own personal outdoor area, not just having a variation of one product in a row. “We just want them to hear the fountains and have a beautiful experience,” said Dawn Wojciechowski. Music played outside and the fountains ran water for the guests to see how everything works and looks together. The Garden Boutique has been
a year in the making and the Wojciechowski’s are happy to finally open. The Garden Boutique, located on 9883 South Avenue in Poland, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. “The whole goal that we had in mind was to make it an experience,” said Ed Wojciechowski.
