Boardman hosts 67th annual Visual Arts Show By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Boardman High School hosted its 67th annual Visual Arts Show on May 16 and 17. Community members gathered at the school’s gymnasium Thursday to see the work of high school students throughout the year. Students and teachers rotated through the show on Friday. “The parents were very impressed with the work that the students do,” said art teacher Alyssa Birch. St udent s i n each of t he

school’s art classes were on display, including more than 1,000 projects. This included studio art, digital art and wood classes. “It went very well,” said art teacher Amanda Bero. “We had a large crowd, I think it gets larger every year.” The focus of the show was the school’s AP boards, set up by the AP art students. Birch said the students do 24 projects throughout the year, and pick their favorite pieces to put together on a board of their own at the art show. Most AP students chose a

theme for their projects, adding an explanation of their motivations. “These are the projects that the community really is impressed by,” Birch said. “Because these students are immensely talented.” Wood four student and senior Sam Larkin had a number of projects on display at the show. He said that he enjoyed his four years in wood classes, and the freedom to choose his own projects that woods four had offered. “It’s a fun skill, and it’s useful to have in life,” Larkin said.

Other wood students had terra-cotta chairs and tables on display at the event. Along with the paintings and digital art, students also displayed sculptures and other projects. Judges Tyler Calpin, Taylor Phelan chose a number of recipients of gold and silver keys at the show. Awards from the Mahoning County Art Show were also on display. “We have a lot of award winning students, and I think of this as a way to honor them as well,” Birch said.

Treats and beats by the decade Using Amazon Alexa, Hoopla and CDs, the Boardman library will sip Tang along to Creedence’s “Bad Moon Rising,” and have a “jam” session with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, (lyrics provided) on June 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. Do you have “old school” music technology? NOTICES

The Mill Creek Metro Parks hosted a bunny scavenger hunt the week before Easter. Community members were able to go to the Ford Nature Center starting on April 15 to search for the hidden bunnies. More than 20 photos of rabbits, that were found in the Mill Creek Park, were posted on the walls of the center. Each photo was accompanied by an interesting fact about bunnies. Community members that were able to find all 20 rabbits told the front desk who gave them an award. Children got to choose between pencils and other Easter themed treats for their prize. After the indoor search the park encouraged community members to take a hike along one of the many available trails and have a real life scavenger hunt for the local bunny population. This event is a series of holiday themed scavenger hunts hosted by the park. Earlier this year, community members

Mooney hosts annual fifth- and sixth-grade day By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Cardinal Mooney High School hosted their annual fifth- and sixth-grade day on March 29. Students from 10 different local schools spent the day at Mooney, working with students and teachers. “It’s a lot of fun, the students really enjoy working with the high schoolers and it’s an awesome way to see what high school will be like,” said student Paige Pavlock. Middle school students arrived at the school around 9 a.m. where they spent the day in four high school classes. All students took English, art and science, and then selected one elective. Student Jack Pepperney said that electives could be anything from psychology to computer classes to athletics. “We have a lot to offer at Mooney and it’s really cool that students get the chance to see what they are interested in,” Pepperney said. High school students were given the day off during the event, though many attended as volunteers. According to Rebecca Bayley, Director of Admissions and Marketing with Mooney, more

High school students assisted middle schoolers in their classes, pairing with a group of students throughout the day. “This event is really cool because when I did it when I was younger it really made me realize that I wanted to go to Mooney,” Pepperney said. POLICE REPORTS May 9 Arrest: A traffic stop near Tiffany Boulevard and U.S. Route 224 resulted in the arrest of Brandon M. Rozier, 31, of West Evergreen Avenue, Youngstown, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. Rozier’s breath-test results showed a 0.231 blood-alcohol content, nearly three times Ohio’s legal intoxication limit, a report showed. Assault: Police were sent to the Mahoning County jail to pick up Jamela M. Sanders, 32, of Cook Avenue, Boardman, who faced a simple-assault charge, related to a fight April 28 between two women at a Market Street hair salon, where the accuser alleged Sanders had stabbed her once with a pair of scissors. Theft: A Warren woman told officers that after leaving a Southern Park Mall restaurant, she noticed a $250 Nintendo device missing from her vehicle. Arrest: Police answered a call about a woman passed out in a vehicle near Afton Avenue, where they reportedly found a car facing east in the westbound lane and charged Amanda K. Tondo, 45, of Afton, Boardman, with operating a vehicle impaired. Tondo registered a 0.171 bloodalcohol content, a report stated. Domestic violence: Makayla M. Ortello, 20, of Clifton Drive, Boardman, was charged with the crime after authorities responded to a possible fight at a Doral Drive big-box store, where the father of her child alleged Ortello struck his face and sprayed him with pepper spray during an argument. Store surveillance footage showed that Ortello was the primary aggressor, a report indicated. Burglary: A woman told officers that after noticing a suspicious car driving in her neighborhood, she returned to her Devonshire Drive residence to see a door being closed. After running into her home, the woman saw a man walking off her rear deck and into the backyard, where he tossed a nightgown at her as she confronted him and while fleeing on foot. Theft: Jerry L. London IV, 32, of Wilmette

Lane, Youngstown, was charged with theft and obstructing official business, and Meagan S. Rodriguez, 27, of Riblett Avenue, Youngstown, faced two counts of assault on a police officer and one each of theft, obstructing official business and endangering a child after $522 worth of merchandise that included video games was stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. In addition, Rodriguez, who refused several times to identify herself, kicked an officer while flailing her legs during a struggle with police; also, while trying to avoid arrest in a loss-prevention office, she wrapped her legs around a shopping cart, nearly causing it to tip over with a 2-year-old child inside, a report showed. Arrest: Authorities received a tip about a wanted person at Shops at Boardman Park, where they took into custody Norma J. Esposito, 69, who listed addresses on North Schenley Avenue in Youngstown and Riley Avenue in Struthers. Esposito was wanted on warrants charging her with failure to comply with terms of probation and failing to appear for a probation hearing in Boardman Area Court on Market Street. Theft/drug paraphernalia: Henry Smith Jr., 57, was charged with theft and possessing drug paraphernalia after a grass trimmer and a 16-pack of batteries were stolen from Walmart. Smith, of McGuffey Road, Youngstown, also had a suspected crack-cocaine pipe in a cigarette box, police alleged. May 10 Arrest: Edward L. Johnson, 45, who listed addresses on South Forest Avenue in Youngstown and Mathews Road in Boardman, was taken into custody after having been pulled over on Market Street. He was wanted on a warrant charging failure to appear in court. Arrest: While dealing with a vehicle in a ditch near Southern and Washington boulevards, officers arrested Dennis Cortes, who listed addresses on Market Street in North Lima and Stewart Street in Struthers. Cortes, 58, was wanted on two bench warrants, including one from Westmoreland County, Pa., charging assault.
