Canfield Middle School hosted Career Day By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Canfield Middle School students participated in the schools Career Day on May 13. School Counselor Patrice Laurie said that more than 30 careers were represented at the event, in five different categories. Employers from skilled trades, medical fields, business, first responders and career tech were present at the event. Rennee English, the media communication specialist at Canfield, said that the school wanted to give students the opportunity to explore a variety of career options. “They are in eighth grade, so next year is the time they really start making decisions about what they want to do,” English said. During the event, eighthgraders were given cards that were stamped off when they visited a member of each of the five groups. Students broke into sections, meeting with the individuals representing different careers. During the event, English said that the school provided the guests with key bits of information to mention, but then let the students lead the event. One employer present, John Strachan of City Machine Technologies Inc., said that he was impressed with the students interest. “A lot of them had questions that were pointed, and showed a genuine interest in what we do,” Strachan said. Laurie said that a big part of the eighth-grade year is career exploration. “This is just a natural next step to that, actually allowing the students to explore the careers first hand,” Laurie said. She said that the school’s goal was to show students that they didn’t only have one pathway, to go to college after high school, but rather had a variety of options. “A lot of people are worried now a days about the cost of col-

lege, and many of the employers here are from trade schools or even pay for students to go to school,” she said. One such employer was Jason Rubin from CR Electric. He said that he was also impressed by the students questions. “They really seemed to know a lot more about the field than I expected, and they asked a lot of questions that made me think they were taking it seriously,” Rubin said. Representatives from the Canfield Police Department and Fire Department were also present at the event. Students were able to go outside of the school and look at the fire truck and police cruiser. “We just want them to experience the different options and opportunities before high school,” English said. After the initial event students gathered into the schools gymnasium. Students who filled out their cards fully, with each of the five career fields, were then put into a raffle for a number of small prizes. “It’s a little incentive for the students to complete the cards and meet the wide variety of employers at the school,” Laurie said.

Seitz delivers son’s message of kindness to CVMS By ABBY SLANKER aslanker@vindy.com

Rose Seitz, mother of Freddie Seitz, visited Canfield Village Middle School eighth-grade students to deliver her son’s message of how to be kind in your daily life on March 29. Freddie Seitz was born with Goldenhar Syndrome, a craniofacial syndrome that left him without a right ear, cheek or jawbone. His story is impactful for students thanks to the success of “Wonder,” by R.J. Palacio about a boy with a craniofacial syndrome and his experiences navigating middle school. Seitz has overcome many obstacles in his life and recently graduated from the University of Akron. Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School eighth-grade teacher Sabrina Eaton addressed the students and welcomed Seitz to the school. “We are reminded today to be kind. When you look at a person, remember that everyone has a story. That person may have gone through something that changed them. Today, we are fortunate to have Rose Seitz here to speak to us about being kind. Her son, Freddie, is a real life wonder and she’s here to pass along his message of kindness to you,” Eaton said. Seitz thanked the students for letting her share Freddie’s story. “Thank you for letting me speak today to share Freddie’s story. The main thing I want you to take away from today is about judging people. We do it all the time. Sometimes we do have to judge a situation for safety reasons, but it’s different when you judge a person,” Seitz said. Seitz then began with Freddie’s story. “Freddie’s story began on July 20, 1992, the day he was born. He was born with Goldenhar Syndrome and has had 60 surgeries in his life. He is also completely deaf. We didn’t put any limits on him growing up. He had a typical childhood and we let him do what he was able to do and what he was capable

of doing. There were things he wanted to do and he did them. He does what he wants to do. He keeps moving and finds his way around any barriers,” Seitz said. Seitz spoke of one such barrier that did not stop Freddie. “He was told he would never be able to do math. He did not let that stop him from trying, and it turns out he is amazing at math. And now, he has an electrical engineering degree and works for the Department of Defense. Electrical engineering is very difficult and is all about math. His message here is if you know you can do it, pursue it,” Seitz said. Seitz said she and her family have received a lot of support. “Along the way, our entire family has received a lot of support. The Children’s Craniofacial Association is wonderful and provides all kinds of support for families. They have an annual family retreat, offer great resources and they use “Wonder” as an inspiration to children and families,” Seitz said. Seitz then showed the students a video from the Children’s Craniofacial Association featuring children with craniofacial conditions declaring “I am Auggie Pullman,” of “Wonder,” which tells the story of 10-year-old Auggie Pullman, a boy with a craniofacial condition. “We can’t teach you empathy. You have to teach yourself what that means. You will run into difficult situations and you will have to decide what your reaction will be. You will have to ask yourself, ‘Can I empathize?’ I challenge you to stop and think about what you are going to do. If you see someone eating lunch by themselves, make an attempt to sit there. You never know, you may make a lifelong friend. When you are out, don’t be afraid to approach and strike up a conversation with someone who looks different from you. Smile and ask questions. Most people are more than happy to answer your questions,” Seitz said.

Seitz told the students the key word is accepted. “Accepted is the key word here. Everyone wants to be accepted. It is a human reaction. Humans have the innate need to be accepted,” Seitz said. Seitz encouraged the students to go outside their comfort zones. “Some kids are very isolated. If you want to help them, go outside your comfort zone. That’s what Freddie would tell you. We are all very different. Talk to someone and find out something about them. I challenge you to make a new friend. Find out about that person. With the decisions you make, you are laying your foundation as an adult,” Seitz said. Seitz told the students there are different ways to help that are very simple. “There are many different ways to help and they are all very simple. You can say hello. You can smile. You can open a door. That alone can make someone’s day. You have the power to change things. You are the first generation of the Kindness Movement. Your generation has the power and you can change how the world will be,” Seitz said. Lastly, Seitz addressed cyber bullying. “Be very careful about what you post and how it could affect another kid. Think about what you are doing to another person and how that person will feel when they read it. One incident can affect the rest of your left. You’re gonna be sorry. Think about your future,” Seitz said. Seitz had one final message from Freddie for the students. “Never give up hope. Always keep going, no matter what situation you are going through,” Seitz said. The program was part of Eaton’s monthly Everyone’s Story Matters initiative which she started in her classroom. “I want to bring diverse stories to my students. I focus on stories that they would not normally have the opportunity to be exposed to or experience,” Eaton said.

Cardinal Mooney celebrates distinguished alumni Cardinal Mooney High School celebrated the achievements of three alumni as it presented the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Prayer Service on April 12. The program took place in the school auditorium, followed by a private luncheon. This year’s honorees were chosen as the highest examples of those who demonstrate concern and dedication to others by embracing Cardinal Mooney’s pillars of “Sanctity, Scholarship and Discipline.” The honorees were further recognized at the Celebrate Mooney Auction on April 13. The 2019 honorees were Barbara L. Brugnaux (’66), Joseph S. Rosky (’73) and E. Jewelle Johnson (’90). Upon her graduation from Cardinal Mooney, Brugnaux attended Saint Mary-of-theWoods University in Indiana, study ing journa lism. A fter working at the Terre Haute Tribune and becoming a faculty member at Saint Mary-of-theWoods, Brugnaux returned to school to study law. She graduated cum laude from Indiana Law School. From there, she established a law practice and worked for the Vigo County, Ind. Prosecutor’s office. In 1994, Barbara become the first female county judge in Vigo County’s history. From there, Brugnaux took on increasing leadership roles within the justice system such as Vigo County Superior Judge, Indiana Bar of Board Examiners and Senior Judge of Indiana, among others. Brugnaux’s community has felt her impact through her lifetime membership in Girl Scouts of America, Board of Trustees at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Terre Haute Symphony Board of Directors and many more organizations. Brugnaux has been a continuous supporter of Cardinal Mooney through the Annual Fund and a Capital Campaign donation in 1993. After Mooney, Rosky graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in In-

dustrial Management. From there, he discovered his true calling with the Boardman Fire Department. He returned to college to earn an Associate Degree in Fire Science. Rosky ultimately made the rank of Captain and retired as Assistant Chief. He spent 15 years on the Metro Arson Strike Team, as well as a three-year term on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Branch of International Association of Arson Investigators of which he was a 20-year member. Rosky has served the church by being an Adult Altar Server and Usher for St. Charles Parish for many years. Joe has been a continuous contributor to the Annual Fund, and also helped pay for the tuition for a student of a family friend, sharing the Cardinal Mooney experience with a younger generation. While at Mooney, Johnson was voted Most Likely to Succeed by her classmates, a superlative that has proven prophetic. Johnson graduated from Miami University with Bachelor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Johnson earned her Juris Doctor from Duke University Law School. She is the Assistant General Counsel and Chief Employment Counsel for Graphic Packaging International, a publicly traded company that is one of the largest producers of folding cartons and coated, recycled boxboard. Prior to her current role, Johnson served as an equity partner at Fisher and Phillips. Throughout Atlanta and Georgia, Johnson has been recognized for her leadership, and given back to others. Johnson has twice, in 2013 and 2018, been appointed to the Chair of the Georgia State Personnel Board by Governor Nathan Deal. In 2007, she served as president of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys. Johnson has supported the Fulton County Atlanta Boys and Girls clubs, Atlanta Legal Aide Society’s Advisory committee and the Atlanta Business League, among many

Learn about the condition of the wiper blades, check the air pressure of the tires, along with the tread depth, inspect the air filter, check the fluid levels–such as oil, brake, windshield wiper, coolant and transmission–and top them off, complete an oil, lube and filter job, check its tire pressure, change a tire, test your battery, inspect the belts and put together a car emergency kit. Learn it all at this event on June 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. This will be a hands-on class as we will be outside (weather permitting.) For adults and teens.
