ed,” said Robin Guzzo who has been working with Austintown food services for 22 years. Tascin Brooks, DTR Food Service Director, works hard with her staff to create different options for the students to enjoy during their breakfast and lunch periods. Austintown Fitch High School has incorporated a salad bar with fresh fruits and vegetables and a coffee bar for those students who need a little pick-me-up. School cafeterias are required to create options that offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. There are also limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.
“It’s crazy, it has it’s challenges, but I enjoy it,” said Lori Vestal, AFHS kitchen manager. The lunch ladies form special bonds with the students who come through their lines. Many students stay in the same line they started using their freshman year because of the bonds they formed with the workers in that particular line. Many of the workers have gotten to know the students so well that they know what each student wants for lunch. The lunch heroes are able to serve 400 students within a 10-minute period. “They’re wonderful people to work with and if I could say anything it’s that I was blessed to work with all of these ladies. In all of the kitchens, we have such a phenomenal team,” said Brooks. “They all care.”

“Nutrition is a big component to education, no question about it. The changes that have been made over the years being more health-conscious, providing nutrition, the partnerships that Tascin’s made with the coaches in the athletic department to really look at nutrition. It’s wonderful,” said Austintown Superintendent Vince Colaluca. Every school’s kitchen has an average of 14 employees in addition to the food service office. They all form a special relationship working with each other and love working together as a team. The employees reach out to the children to get their feedback on what they’re providing for meals and also taking suggestions on what the students would like more of.

Austintown trustees have appointed Bruce Shepas as the new Parade Chairman for the 41st annual Fourth of July parade. Shepas said he was honored to be selected as the Parade Chairman by the trustees and he takes pride in his involvement in the community. The parade committee has been working together to continue
making the parade a success like it has been in the past. “I’m very honored that they asked me to take this position. I’m glad to contribute to the community in any way that I can,” said Shepas. The t heme of t his year’s Fourth of July parade is “Austintown: A Slice of Heaven” and participants are encouraged to design their floats to show what their slice of heaven is; whether it be something like a vacation
spot or their favorite food. One of the biggest changes of the parade this year is the start time. The parade will start at noon and will begin at Highway Tabernacle. The earlier time will allow everyone in the community to enjoy the rest of their day with friends and families. This is the first time in 41 years the parade has changed times. The parade will begin at Raccoon and Kirk Road and will end at Falcon Drive. There

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
Open house showcases robotics program By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Austintown Fitch Robotics hosted its first open house on May 2 at Fitch High School. The open house was hosted to introduce the robotics program to the community, students and people from other schools. There were several in robotics at the event to give information to the guests who attended and had questions. “The point was to get the community to understand this is what we do. It also gives us a recruitment effort to get all the kids in the community to come out and see that this is here and they know there are robotics in the schools, if they want to join a robotics team we’re here,” said Andy Yantes, Robotics mentor. Austintown is one of the only school districts in the area
that offers a robotics program for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. This year, there are 70 students in the robotics club in Austintown. There are seven teams throughout the school system and each team consists of 10 students. The open house showed demonstrations of FIRST robotics programs that are available for the students in every grade. FIRST - For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology - was created in 1989 to spark young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. FIRST is a nonfor-profit that designs accessible and innovative programs that will motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. “I like being able to endorse STEM in the community,” said
sophomore Elise Yantes. “I like not only being able to show our program, but I also like being in a program that you can help the community and we volunteer as much as we can. It’s really nice to be somewhere where we can help as much as teach.” There have been more younger girls that have shown interest in the robotics program and STEM. Part of that is due to the fact that they are seeing how fun it is and all of the different opportunities being in a program like that can bring them. “One of my favorite parts is getting to show younger girls what it’s like to be a part of an engineering field, just because there’s so few,” said sophomore Taylor Baer. Students in robotics enjoy being given the opportunity to show what they do, where they go and how they form bonds with each other by being part of a special program. Being able to showcase the different projects the students work on gives the community an idea of what the program is about and sparks the interest of students and makes them what to join.
