BLOSSOM

This handsome orange guy is named Leo. A nice person found him wandering around and brought him in to West Side Cats on May 11 because they were not able to keep him. Leo is 10 1/2 years young and he is excellent with other cats, dog and children. He is laid back and mellow. Give Leo a second chance at life with a great family. Stop by WSC and meet him to see if he is the right fit to be the newest addition to your family.

Blossom is not doing so well at the shelter. She would really love to be in a home curled up on the couch feeling safe and loved. She is about 7-years-old and is a mix breed. She is good with people, but a little guarded with other dogs. She is sponsored for the right home. If interested, send a PM over Facebook.

Host families needed for Northern Ireland teens The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. If you are interested in hosting a teen, contact Greg at 330-770-1440. For more information, visit ulsterprojectmv.com.

The Lost Crate found a new home By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Lost Crate opened its doors for the first time on May 2 to sell a variety of furniture. Growing up in a family of small-business owners, this is the first business Rhonda Broyles has owned. She said while it’s exciting, it is scary at the same time not knowing exactly what to expect. Broyles goes to flea markets or auctions to pick out new and antique furniture to flip with chalk paint. Broyles puts on a chalk paint and wax to give the piece of furniture a new look. “I do my own pieces and I’ll sell them retail. I also do custom painting,” said Broyles. Broyles plans on teaching classes to people who want to learn how to chalk paint and hosting birthday parties. She has been thinking of the possibility of hosting a paint and sip event to see how many people are interested. “I name each of my pieces. They have a name of somebody that I know,” said Broyles. Broyles has been posting her finished pieces on Facebook as a way of advertising. Many of her friends look for pieces with their names and comment how exciting it feels to them. Naming the pieces is a unique way to draw in the attention of people and make them feel included. The Lost Crate is located at 6241 Market Street in Boardman and is open 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday.

Fellows Riverside Garden hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on April 21. Mandy Smith led the class and taught the children all about moss, algae and lichen. After a brief introduction, the children went outside into the garden to find different kinds of moss, algae and lichen. There were stones and cement ground covered with moss, trees covered with lichen and wet stones from the fountain

covered with algae. The children learned how each type of plant is beneficial to the environment and how they are created. The children were eager to have the chance to go outside and be able to look and touch the different plants they were learning about. “Marimo moss come from lakes in Japan and what happens is water moves back and forth and it takes the algae and starts to shape it round. People in Japan have had Marimo moss pets for hundreds of years and

they can live for hundreds of years,” said Smith. At the end of the class, each of the children got to make a little home for their own Marimo moss ball. The children put in beads, shells, pearls, rocks and many others items in a jar to make the Marimo moss ball a nice home. Everyone was allowed to take home their Marimo moss ball and have their own little moss pet. The Marimo balls the children were given were small, but can grow to be the size of a soccer ball.

April 23 was the 34th annual Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Clean-up. Eighteen locations throughout Mill Creek MetroParks were visited and cleaned up by Cub Scout Packs, Girl Scout Troops and Boy Scout Troops. Throughout the 33 years of the Earth Day Clean-up, there have been more than 11,000 volunteers who spent more than 34,700 hours working hard to keep the parks clean. The groups met at 9 a.m. and worked until noon to help clean up litter and debris that can harm the environment. More than 300 volunteers came together to help each other and work together to clean the various locations of Mill Creek MetroParks. The volunteers are given bags and the materials necessary to help pick up the litter. The boys in Troop 184 of Austintown were eager to help clean up. Ursuline High School hosted its second annual Fiesta de las Americas night on April 28 at Ursuline High School. The first Fiesta de las Americas night in 2015 brought in 300 people and this year Paulina Montaldo, a Spanish teacher at Ursuline, said 320 people signed in. The Spanish Club began planning for the event in December. “The goal is for the Spanish Clubs in all areas to participate,” said Montaldo. Spanish Club partnered with a couple businesses to help allow the event be fun and free for all. Senor Jalapeno in Liberty donated food and Kester’s Krias Alapacas in Pulaskim, Pa. brought in two alpacas for the guests to visit and pet. Parents of the students also made food to contribute to the event. “We tr y to come rain or shine,” said Ursuline alumna and co-owner of Kester’s Krias Alpacas, Joyce Kester. During the first half of the night, the dance floor was filled See FIESTA, Page 7

with students and other guests who learned all types of dances to perform for the guests. Two Ursuline juniors, Bryce Blazek and Brendan Faloon, performed for the first time this year and look forward to doing it again next year. “Somebody danced it last year and we just watched the video and practiced that,” said Faloon. At the end of the night, the stage was open for anyone to go

up and dance with their friends and families. A math teacher from Ursuline, Greg Sauline, took the stage at the end and student were more than eager to get up and join him. “My favorite part is the open floor at the end. Everyone goes up and can dance with their family,” said Montaldo. Students from other schools and guests from around the area were invited to Fiesta de las Americas to see the hard work and dedication the Spanish Club at Ursuline High School put in to make the night happen.

The students in Spanish Club created trifold projects of different Hispanic countries to put on display for the night. These projects allowed guests to look at them and learn more about different countries. “It’s very fun and rewarding,” said Marie Bond, President of Ursuline’s Spanish Club. Montaldo, Bond and the rest of Ursuline High School looks forward to having Fiesta de las Americas for the third time next year and hopefully to bring in more guests as the popularity of the event grows.

Boardman boys track team sends athletes to regionals The Boardman boys track team will send eight athletes to the 2016 OHSAA Regional Championship after finishing third overall at this year’s district championship hosted at Fitch High School. Spartan senior Brendon Lucas dominated the sprint events, finishing first in the 100, 200 and 400. Lucas’s time of 49.12 in the 400 set a new BHS record besting Dayne Hammond’s mark of 49.20 set in 2012. Lucas also was a part of the Spartan 4x400 relay team along with classmates Kris Santilli and Nathan Had-

ley and junior Kobe Adu-Poku that placed third and earned a regional spot. “Brendon’s performance at the district meet is something that rarely occurs at the Division I level,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “Add to that setting a school record and aiding in a regional qualifying relay is a night that will not be duplicated in a long, long time.” The Spartan 4x800 relay team of Hadley, Adu-Poku, junior Chris Butler and junior Nathaniel Ams qualified for the regional after placing fourth in a season best

time of 8:16. Butler also earned a trip to the regional championship by placing third in the 1600 in a career best time of 4:28. “Chris Butler has become one of the best distance runners in the area over the past two years,” said Phillips. “His work ethic and dedication is a great example for younger runners to follow.” Boardman will also send two athletes in the field events to the regional championship with senior Jason Jama in the shot put and junior George Wallace in the discus. Jama placed third with a career best throw of 53 feet 11.25

inches and Wallace earned his trip to regional with a throw of 149 feet 7 inches also a career best throw. “Very happy for Jason and George,” said Phillips. “Our district has excellent throwers and to make it to regional is not easy.” The Spartans scored in a variety of events including the pole vault with juniors Richard Fisher and Don Lewis placing sixth and seventh overall in career best vaults of 11 feet. Sophomore Justice Jama was tied for eighth in the high jump tying a career

best with a jump of 6 feet. Hadley placed fifth in the 800 with a career best run of 1:58, and AduPoku was seventh in the 400 with a time of 53.71. The 4x200 relay team of Santilli, senior Cannon Carlile, sophomore Ethan Himes and freshman Manny Perez placed seventh overall in a season best time of 1:34.76. The work ethic of the team and the job of the coaching staff Rick Sypert, Jason Armburger, Ashlee Frazzini, John Depietro, John Pallini, Doug Kephart and John Phillips Sr. have placed Boardman in an excellent position.
