BLOSSOM

This handsome orange guy is named Leo. A nice person found him wandering around and brought him in to West Side Cats on May 11 because they were not able to keep him. Leo is 10 1/2 years young and he is excellent with other cats, dog and children. He is laid back and mellow. Give Leo a second chance at life with a great family. Stop by WSC and meet him to see if he is the right fit to be the newest addition to your family.

Blossom is not doing so well at the shelter. She would really love to be in a home curled up on the couch feeling safe and loved. She is about 7-years-old and is a mix breed. She is good with people, but a little guarded with other dogs. She is sponsored for the right home. If interested, send a PM over Facebook.

CHS seniors participate in 36th annual Civic Day By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The 36th annual Civic Day, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Canfield, took place on May 6 with 37 Canfield High School seniors assuming the roles of city, township and school officials. The day was organized by Canfield High School government teachers Todd Muckleroy and Mike Pavlansky and provided the students an opportunity to become familiar with the workings of their local government. Each student was assigned an official from Canfield City Council, Canfield Schools or Canfield Township to shadow during the day. For example, Abhijit Khatiwada took over the role of Mayor Bernie Kosar, Sr., Andrew Hallof took over the role of City Council Member John Morvay, Gianna Campana took over the role of City Engineer Dave Pabak, Jack Pallante took over the role of Fire Chief Donald Hutchison, Vince Ferrier took over for Township Trustee Marie Izzo-Cartwright, Matt Minenok assumed the role of Township Fiscal Officer Carmen Heasley, Sydney Stewart took over the role of School Superintendent Alex Geordan, Mason Mangopora took over the role of Canfield High School Principal Mike Moldovan and Morgan Leonard assumed the role of Resource Officer Steve Garstka. Civic Day started at the Canfield Local Schools Board Office where the students conducted a mock school board meeting

with their official counterparts. The school officials helped the students understand how a school board meeting is conducted and explained policies and procedures for the meeting. The students then took a tour of Canfield Village Middle School and were given a tour of the police and fire stations. The students went to the Canfield Municipal Building where they were welcomed by City Council Member John Morvay and given an overview of City Council meetings. “Welcome to Canfield City Council. We have five elected cou nci l members a nd t he council contracts with the city manager, who runs the day to day operations of the city. Our meetings follow Robert’s Rules of Order and we structure our meetings around those rules, so we will follow those rules today,” Morvay said. Mayor Kosar also welcomed the students and explained a few things about the City Council and the city manager. “The city manager fixes everything that breaks. The mayor and the city council do not have the power to give orders. There is one boss and that is City Manager Joe Warino. We are a charter government. There is the mayor, city council people and the city manager. It is an excellent form of government. We hire a professional to be our city manager. You will find this mock city council meeting interesting, I hope,” Kosar told the

students. The students hosted a mock city council meeting, with their counterparts. The students were coached through a council meeting, complete with motions, questions from meeting attendees, discussions, roll call, debates and banging of the gavel. Toward the end of the meeting, a motion was made to provide the absence of final exams

for Canfield High School seniors. After a second, the motion was put to a vote, the majority ruled in favor of the motion. The students then traveled to the Canfield Township Hall where a mock trustee meeting took place. To close out the day, the Rotary Club of Canfield hosted a luncheon for the students and city, township and school officials at St. Michael’s Church.

Baby boutique benefits families By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman Park hosted the 12th biannual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 21. The Baby Bargain Boutique is put on twice a year, in the spring and fall, at Boardman Park for families to buy and sell gently used items. There were 150 different moms selling to moms, there weren’t any commercial vendors. “It’s a great way to find good deals and support other moms in the community,” said Karen McCallum, Boardman Park’s

Recreation Director. Many people come out, rain or shine, to look for deals. More than 2,000 people attended the four hour event to bargain shop for themselves and for others. There are several vendors who continue to come back year after year to shop and sell. Aaron and Michelle Dellorco attend the event in both spring and fall and usually set up two spots to sell items. This is their fifth year and are looking forward to keep coming to the event for years to follow. “People get good deals. I feel

better about selling my stuff, it benefits us, it benefits people who are shopping. I shop here as well,” said Michelle Dellorco. W hi le some people have been coming for years, this is only the first or second time for many vendors. This is the second Baby Bargain Boutique Jenny Arnaut has set up a stand to sell items. Her first time was in October and she is planning on continuing to come again. The next Baby Bargain Boutique will be at Boardman Park on Sept. 24.

CHC celebrates school nutrition super heroes Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School had the opportunity to let their inner super hero out and at the same time show their appreciation of the school’s nutrition staff during National School Lunch Super Hero Day on May 6. Students were encouraged to wear their favorite super hero gear in support of the nutrition staff. The day even had a super hero themed lunch menu, which included “kryptonite” corn dog, “super-vision” veggies and “recharge” milk. The first Friday in May was designated School Lunch Super Hero Day by the School Nutrition Association, Random House Children’s Books and national children’s author and illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, creator of the “Lunch Lady Hero” series inspired by his childhood lunch lady, Jeannie. The acclaimed series is about two school cafeteria workers who serve hungry students by day and fight crime by night. The popular books put a spotlight on the important role school nutrition employees play in nurturing students. “Today is a day of positive reinforcement for our lunch cafeterias. Canfield School’s nutrition department is a well-oiled machine. The middle school is the base kitchen and C.H.

Campbell and Hilltop Elementary are satellite kitchens. Each school’s nutrition staff interacts with just about every child in the school. They see the kids every day and get to know them well, while encouraging them to eat more fruits and vegetables. Our school nutrition professionals are truly heroes,” said Terri Hutchison, Canfield Local Schools director of Food Services Canfield serves 1,800 students daily in four buildings. Between preparing healthy meals, adhering to strict nutrition standards,

navigating student food allergies and offering service with a smile, Canfield nutrition professionals have a lot on their plates. Updated federal nutrition standards for school meals require cafeterias to offer larger servings and a larger variety of fruits and vegetables, switch to whole grains and limit the sodium, calories and saturated fat in each meal. Canfield nutrition professionals have been mixing up the menu and getting students excited about trying the new, healthier choices in school lunch.

Ursuline High School hosted its second annual Fiesta de las Americas night on April 28 at Ursuline High School. The first Fiesta de las Americas night in 2015 brought in 300 people and this year Paulina Montaldo, a Spanish teacher at Ursuline, said 320 people signed in. The Spanish Club began planning for the event in December. “The goal is for the Spanish Clubs in all areas to participate,” said Montaldo. Spanish Club partnered with a couple businesses to help allow the event be fun and free for all. Senor Jalapeno in Liberty donated food and Kester’s Krias Alapacas in Pulaskim, Pa. brought in two alpacas for the guests to visit and pet. Parents of the students also made food to contribute to the event. “We tr y to come rain or shine,” said Ursuline alumna and co-owner of Kester’s Krias Alpacas, Joyce Kester. During the first half of the night, the dance floor was filled See FIESTA, Page 7

with students and other guests who learned all types of dances to perform for the guests. Two Ursuline juniors, Bryce Blazek and Brendan Faloon, performed for the first time this year and look forward to doing it again next year. “Somebody danced it last year and we just watched the video and practiced that,” said Faloon. At the end of the night, the stage was open for anyone to go

up and dance with their friends and families. A math teacher from Ursuline, Greg Sauline, took the stage at the end and student were more than eager to get up and join him. “My favorite part is the open floor at the end. Everyone goes up and can dance with their family,” said Montaldo. Students from other schools and guests from around the area were invited to Fiesta de las Americas to see the hard work and dedication the Spanish Club at Ursuline High School put in to make the night happen.

The students in Spanish Club created trifold projects of different Hispanic countries to put on display for the night. These projects allowed guests to look at them and learn more about different countries. “It’s very fun and rewarding,” said Marie Bond, President of Ursuline’s Spanish Club. Montaldo, Bond and the rest of Ursuline High School looks forward to having Fiesta de las Americas for the third time next year and hopefully to bring in more guests as the popularity of the event grows.

CHS Baccalaureate to be June 1 On June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Canfield High School Auditorium, the Class of 2016 will host the annual Baccalaureate service. The student led Baccalaureate is an inspirational service which occurs the Wednesday prior to graduation. This year’s keynote speaker will be Dave Kohut. There will be a reception immediately following in honor of the senior class.

Host families needed for Northern Ireland teens The Mahoning Valley Ulster project is a summer exchange program that brings together teen leaders from Northern Ireland and the United States. Founded in 1975, the program offers spiritual, social and service opportunities to help the students discover the common ground they share despite religious differences. Each year, Valley families play host to more than a dozen Northern Irish teens for this enriching experience. The group is searching for host families for two boys from Northern Ireland. Teens will arrive on June 27 and will depart on July 27. The host family should have a male teen between the ages of 14 and 17. This life-changing experience includes six service projects (Purple Cat, Potential Development, Mill Creek Children’s Center, Habitat for Humanity, Jubilee Gardens and Zion Lutheran Food Bank) as well as many fun events, such as a Scrappers Game, a road rally and a trip to Cedar Point to name a few. If you are interested in hosting a teen, contact Greg at 330-770-1440. For more information, visit ulsterprojectmv.com.

Carpenter commits to College of Wooster By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Canfield High School senior golfer Kaci Carpenter signed a letter-of-intent to continue her athletic career at the College of Wooster as a future member of the Fighting Scots women’s golf team May 16. A signing ceremony took place in the high school’s athletic foyer, with Carpenter surrounded by family, friends, classmates, faculty, staff, Diane McCall, CHS girls golf coach and Greg Cooper, CHS athletic director. “Welcome and thank you for coming to support Kaci and our very successful girls golf program. Kaci, this is your day. From Canfield, you will move on and we know you have what it takes to be successful at Wooster as you continue your athletic career as a member of the Fighting Scots,” Cooper said. Cooper then introduced McCall to say a few words about

Carpenter. “This is a very special time for Kaci, and her parents as well. I met Kaci when she was in sixthgrade and now she is graduating to play at a collegiate level. Our girls golf program has had 22 out of 67 graduate to play at the collegiate level. I am so proud of Kaci and she has done such a great job. She is actually the first player in Canfield to achieve a hole-in-one. It was on hole number three at Diamond Back Golf Course on Aug. 22, 2014. I even got to see it go in the hole. Kaci is a delightful young lady, as is her family. Kaci had lots of colleges after her, and Wooster won,” McCall said. Cooper then gave Carpenter the floor. “Thank you all for coming. It means a lot to me. When I visited Wooster, at the entrance of the college is an arch and the Wooster band was playing, welcoming visitors. It was then that

I knew I could see myself there. And now I know all my hard work is going to pay off as I get to go to my dream college and play golf and go to school. I would like to thank my parents for all their guidance and setting me on my path of life. Thank you,” Carpenter said. During her scholastic golfing career, Carpenter earned three varsity letters, was a member of the Lady Cardinals’ 2013 state tournament-qualifying team and recorded the program’s first ever hole-in-one. Additionally, she earned first team All-American Conference honors as well as All-Northeastern Ohio District Honorable Mention recognition following her senior season. During her three-year varsity career at Canfield, her contributions helped her team achieve a 40-16 record in head-to-head in matches. Equally impressive as well in non-scholastic golf events,

Carpenter was twice a U.S. Kids Canton Tour Player of the Year and a four time Greatest Golfer of the Valley finalist who finished as runner-up in 2013 while competing in the 12-14 year old division. Carpenter said her love of golf started at a young age. “I started going golfing with my dad when I was 8. He introduced me to the game and we formed a bond over golf and we still have that bond. I would putt, chip and drive the cart. I never thought I would end up here. Wooster is my dream college,” Carpenter said. Off the links, Carpenter was a two-time state tournament competitor in speech and debate, earning two varsity letters and in choir, earning one varsity letter. While at Wooster, Carpenter plans on majoring in Business Economics. She is the daughter of Scott and Alice Carpenter.
