Annual Strawberry Festival to be June 24 Poland Presbyterian Church is proud to be part of Celebrate Poland. Join them at the annual Strawberry Festival on June 24 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the church front lawn of 2 Poland Manor, rain or shine. The Sons of the American Revolution, Ohio Society will be Conducting an organizational meeting to form a Mahoning Valley chapter. The meeting will take place at the Canfield library, located at 43 W. Main St. from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on June 8. Membership in the Sons of the American Revolution is for any male who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the American War of Independence. This handsome orange guy is named Leo. A nice person found him wandering around and brought him in to West Side Cats on May 11 because they were not able to keep him. Treasures of the Trunk sale offers vendor spaces The Poland Lions Treasures of the Trunk sale will take place on June 11 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland Seminary High School parking lot. Spaces are currently available to vendors wishing to participate in the event. The cost for registration is $10 per one parking space with payment postmarked before May 1 and $15 per space after May 1. No hot food, soft drink or raffle drawing vendors will be accepted. Poland North Preschool hosted a Science Day on April 29 for students to become young scientists. Samantha Cox put together a variety of science experiments for her transitional kindergarten class and Terry Wittenauer’s class to enjoy. Cox set up five stations with different science experiments for the students to participate in. At the first station, the students explored static electricity with balloons, pop cans and tissue papers. The second station consisted of diagrams of different body parts the students could take apart and examine. The third station was for the students to see how water “walks” from one container to another using just a paper towel and to see if a paper towel can
stay dry when it’s put in a cup in water. The fourth station was a test to see if crayons floated or sank and what would happen when a pencil was pushed through a plastic bag filled with water. The final station allowed the students to make crystals using pipe cleaners, borax and hot water. “Look how much it filled up in just a few minutes, isn’t that pretty cool?” Cox asked of the walking water. The students were impressed by all of the different activities, especially the hands-on ones that allowed them to experience how it worked. The students finished the day by making crystals. Holy Family Youth Ministry was an integral part of the Purple Cat Prom for the third consecutive year. Representatives were present at St. Nick Banquet Hall to help clean, set up and decorate the hall. They also helped to prepare and serve food, as well as dance and visit with the partygoers. The theme this year was “Joe Gallagher’s Birthday.” Gallagher was the first client of the Purple Cat and was honored on what would have been his 74th birthday at the prom. The Purple Cat, a nonprofit organization, offers day program alternatives for adults with mental and physical challenges. Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies The 44th annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies will be hosted by Poland Township on May 30. Joe Mazur will be the Grand Marshal for the parade with special guest Frank Bochenek. The keynote speaker of the day will be retired Colonel Brian Kennedy, USMC and the chaplain of the day will be Pastor Reid Lamport from Church of The Rock. The day will begin with a parade line-up at 8:45 a.m. at Baird Mitchell Field. A memorial service will be hosted at 9 a.m, to honor Squadron 15 Four Chaplains at Post 15 Home. The Four Chaplains included Lieutenants George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, John P. Washington and Clark V. Poling. These men gave their life jackets to four others when their ship, the USTA Dorchester, sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine. The Four Chaplains were last seen linked arm in arm when their ship sank into icy black waters. This ser-
vice is sponsored by Sons of The American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15, American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15 and American Legion Auxiliary Mahoning Valley Unit 15. At 10 a.m., the parade will commence at the corner of Lee Street and Cortland Street. The Main Street Bridge Memorial Service for Those Lost at Sea will be hosted shortly after at 10:15 a.m. Memorial Services in Historic Riverside Cemetery will begin at 10:30 a.m. In case of inclement weather, memorial ceremonies will take place in the Poland Middle School Gymnasium on College Street. For this year’s Memorial Day Parade and Memoria l Ceremonies, Sons of The American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 is again asking all children to decorate their bikes in red, white and blue, and to ride them in the parade. Parade marshals will be available to show the bicyclists where to go. Children planning to partici-
pate need to be at Baird Mitchell Field with their bikes no later than 9:45 a.m. Squadron 15 is also asking that anyone owning a motorcycle, convertible or an antique or classic car who is interested in participating in the 2016 Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Ceremonies to call 330-5655333. Vehicles may be used to drive veterans and other dignitaries along the one-mile parade route. Vehicle owners planning to participate should arrive at Post 15 no later than 9 a.m. Keep in mind that no commercial and/or political units will be permitted to participate. The throwing of candy during the parade and the distribution of any items along the parade route is also prohibited. This is done as a way of honoring the military dead. Those doing so will be denied participation or asked to leave by parade marshals. This Sons of The American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 policy will be strictly enforced.

The Poland library hosted a special Mother’s Day craft night on April 26. Vikki Peck, a Poland librarian, showed the children who attended t he event how to make a decorative candle for their mothers, or another special woman in their lives, for Mother’s Day. Peck supplied plain, white candles and the other materials needed to dec-
orate the candle. There were out lines t hat were related to Mother’s Day that the children could use to trace onto tissue paper or they could create their own designs. The children used markers and Sharpies to color in the outlines before they were put on the candle. “Once the picture is ready, we’ll put some wax paper over the drawing and blow it with the hair dryer, it transfers onto
the candle,” said Peck. The heat from the hair dryer allowed the tissue paper with the design to melt onto the candle. The candle was big enough for the children to add multiple designs for decoration. Decorating the candle was a simple way to make a unique and homemade gift for Mother’s Day. Small gift bags with tissue paper were provided for the children to put their candles in when they finished.

Ursuline High School hosted its second annual Fiesta de las Americas night on April 28 at Ursuline High School. The first Fiesta de las Americas night in 2015 brought in 300 people and this year Paulina Montaldo, a Spanish teacher at Ursuline, said 320 people signed in. The Spanish Club began planning for the event in December. “The goal is for the Spanish Clubs in all areas to participate,” said Montaldo. Spanish Club partnered with a couple businesses to help allow the event be fun and free for all. Senor Jalapeno in Liberty donated food and Kester’s Krias Alapacas in Pulaskim, Pa. brought in two alpacas for the guests to visit and pet. Parents of the students also made food to contribute to the event. “We tr y to come rain or shine,” said Ursuline alumna and co-owner of Kester’s Krias Alpacas, Joyce Kester. with students and other guests who learned all types of dances to perform for the guests. Two Ursuline juniors, Bryce Blazek and Brendan Faloon, performed for the first time this year and look forward to doing it again next year. “Somebody danced it last year and we just watched the video and practiced that,” said Faloon. At the end of the night, the stage was open for anyone to go
up and dance with their friends and families. A math teacher from Ursuline, Greg Sauline, took the stage at the end and student were more than eager to get up and join him. “My favorite part is the open floor at the end. Everyone goes up and can dance with their family,” said Montaldo. Students from other schools and guests from around the area were invited to Fiesta de las Americas to see the hard work and dedication the Spanish Club at Ursuline High School put in to make the night happen.
The students in Spanish Club created trifold projects of different Hispanic countries to put on display for the night. These projects allowed guests to look at them and learn more about different countries. “It’s very fun and rewarding,” said Marie Bond, President of Ursuline’s Spanish Club. Montaldo, Bond and the rest of Ursuline High School looks forward to having Fiesta de las Americas for the third time next year and hopefully to bring in more guests as the popularity of the event grows.

First Night Youngstown is calling for local and regional artists to participate in the annual design competition of its New Year’s Eve events admission button. The winning artist will be promoted at all press events. The artist will also be a celebrity guest in the Downtown Christmas holiday parade and tree-lighting event. The button series is traditionally intended to celebrate downtown Youngstown’s unique historic buildings and architecture. Buttons may be designed using any medium and then digitally saved as a .jpeg. Artists should depict Youngstown in a manner that highlights New Year’s Eve, no champagne glasses or images of drinking alcohol; First Night events are family-friendly. The design must include the phrase “First Night Youngstown 2017.” Interested artists should call 330-7449966 or email firstnightyoungstown@ gamil.com. Submission deadline is Aug. 31. Ladies in Little Black Dresses for literacy Join the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County for a Literary Society fundraising event at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland at 6 p.m. on June 9. Tickets are $35 each and include heavy appetizers. There will be a cash bar. Guests are asked to wear their favorite little black dress and bring a copy of a book by their favorite author to swap with other attendees. The Whispering Pines District, Greater Western Reserve Council and the Boy Scouts of America programs came together on April 23 to help clean up Mill Creek MetroParks for Earth Day. April 23 was the 34th annual Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Clean-up. Eighteen locations throughout Mill Creek MetroParks were visited and clea ned up by Cub Scout Packs, Girl Scout Troops and Boy Scout Troops. Throughout the 33 years of the Earth Day Clean-up, there have been more than 11,000 volunteers who spent more than 34,700 hours working hard to keep the parks clean. The groups met at 9 a.m. and worked until noon to help clean up litter and debris that can harm the environment. More than 300 volunteers came together to help each other and work together to clean the various locations of Mill Creek MetroParks. The volunteers are given bags and the materials necessary to help pick up the litter. The boys in Troop 184 of Austintown were eager to help clean up. They got to spend the morning outside with each

Each year the volunteers come to the park and help out no matter if its sunny or rainy. Numerous bags are filled with random items that don’t belong in the park.
The Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Clean-up brought forth their support for the MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup and those who volunteered. Tables were set up at Ford Nature Center where representatives from Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks were available for any information regarding the clean-up.
