Students display school projects at STEM night

T he Au st i ntow n M idd le School welcomed members of the community to the sixth annual Austintown STEM Showcase in the school’s cafetorium on May 8.

Students made displays for projects that the classes did throughout the school year in their STEM classes. These classes give a focus on hands-on learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Each project exhibited by a particular grade had been done by each student in the grade.

For example, all seventh- and eighth-grade students worked on cars for a soap box derby.

Seventh-grade students Peyden Grope and Elizabeth Jadue said the derby cars are the biggest project they do during the year. The students spent time smoothing out the car and making it a fast as possible, while

Other projects included a remote controlled robot that could pick up a tennis ball and a robot with a light sensor that sorted white, blue and black marbles.

Each project had student representatives to explain it and a presentation board that showed steps involved in the project and stated how the project connected to the STEM curriculum.

“The purpose of the night is to display all their hard work,” said Danielle Chine, the district’s STEM instructor. She said the class gives the students a current-day learning environment while incorporating all elements of STEM for a real-life application. The showcase allows the students to demonstrate what they do in the program and the curriculum they learn.

The event featured many projects including bridge models, 3D printing and robotics.

In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea.

He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations.

No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700. The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley had their annual Valley Autism 5K and Family Fun Walk on April 28 at Austintown Township Park.

The organization has had the 5k for five years and the fun walk for three years. Runners

of the 5K went by themselves at nine. The fun walk had families and groups walking in support of a person with autism in the lives. These teams often wore matching outfits and walked with a flag.

The 5K and fun walk is the organization’s largest fundraiser during the year. The teams get help from friends and family to raise money for donations at the event. They made $1,500 last year and looked to surpass it this year, despite cold weather and rain.

The event and amount of donations grow every year.

Most of the money raised at the event will go toward the group’s Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. (f inding rewa rds in ever y day). The camp gives children on the autism spectrum an opportunity to have a summer day camp like their peers.

The camp features a trained sta f f of specia l education teachers and behavior therapist to help meet the needs of the children.

The event included a tent for runners and walkers to stay warm while outside and a range of community outreach programs inside the Stacey Pavilion. They also had pony rides and a petting zoo outside and a photo area inside.

Community spends Earth Day cleaning the MetroParks

The Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks organized the annual Earth Day Clean Up on April 21.

Numerous scouting troops a nd communit y orga ni zations visited 29 locations in the metropark to clean up litter and other debris from the areas. They received help from communities in Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, North Jackson, Poland, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown. Carol Vigorito, Recreation and Education Director of Mill Creek MetroParks, and Mike Kupec of the Whispering Pines District worked together to organize the program.

“It’s in my blood to help the env ironment,” said Kupec, who has worked with different forestry groups since he was a child. He created the event with Mill Creek’s then-recreational director 36 years ago. He wanted to give back on Earth Day and help clean up the park he grew up near.

Austintown had three organizations assist in cleaning the park: Cub Scout Pack 184, Boy Scout Troop 184 and Girl Scout Troop 80207. The pack cleaned the Lanterman Gorge, the Boy Scouts took the West Cohasset Trails and the Girl Scouts had the trail behind the Ford Nature Center.

“We want to teach the girls the importance of taking care of the planet,” said Kelly Turner, the head of the Girl Scout Troop 80207. She said this was the group’s first real introduction to the world of scouting.

Boardman had Cub Scout Pack 27 at Lake Newport, Boy Scout Troop 60 at the lower area of Bear’s Den, Venturing Crew 9033 on the Cohasset East Trail, Cub Scout Pack 114 at the MetroParks Farm and Girl Scout Service Units 820 and 821 in different parts of Lake Newport.

The also had the Drund company clean up at Volney Rogers Field.

Paula Barany and Kelley Beatty of Girl Scout Service Units 821 both spoke about how they want to instill the Boy Scout of America’s principal of “leave no trace” in their scouts. The scouts said they got to enjoy nature and exercise while helping the environment. The unit incorporates children from 2-10 from Boardman and Poland.

The Canfield groups included Girl Scout Troop 80095 at the Mill Creek Preserve and Cub Scout Pack 25 and Boy Scout Troop 115 at Lake Newport. Boy Scout Troop 25 cleaned up at the West Coast Drive on April 25.

Casal’s de’ Spa and Salon also joined the program, helping out at the Lake Glacier Boathouse.

Kevin Miller, the Tiger Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 25, also spoke to the principals of “leave no trace.”

“Leave an area better than you found it,” he said about what the program teaches the children.

The group not only helped on Earth Day, but they organize hikes together throughout the year. They always take trash bags with them on these hikes to remove litter from nature.

Poland’s two groups, Girl Scout Troop 80591 and Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 9002, joined in the other groups on the activities. The girl scouts cleaned the area around the Slippery Rock Pavilion and the 9002 groups took the Hitchcock Woods.

“There’s a lot of trash in places you wouldn’t expect,” said Noah Deering, a boy scout with troop 9002. Anthony DiTommaso, the leader of the groups, said he wanted to help leave things natural and pick up the trash they find. The scouts found a lot of cigarette butts and glass in the woods.

Kupec and the leaders believe that the event is important. The first year of the program, they only focused on one hillside and they filled four dumpsters of trash.

The program has since expanded to 42 possible locations that the park decided would be best. Kupec said the event allows for groups to help clean the areas that park crews cannot always reach.

The event is open to the public each year. This year, Kupec

and Vigorito had two businesses and four families helped with the program. They also get support from the Mahoning County Green Team Recycling Division and Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup program.

An Austintown citizen got the chance to celebrate his 60th birthday as a fireman for a shift on Feb. 25.

At the age of 5, Brad Baird missed his chance to visit the Austintown fire department with the rest of his kindergarten class. He had his tonsils removed the day his class visited the department. He remembers being in the backyard when the fire truck passed his house with his classmates onboard.

“I was devastated I couldn’t go,” Baird recalled. He often brought the story up and said he had been a deprived little child for 55 years.

His mother, Beverly Baird, felt bad about his absence from school that day ever since.

On Baird’s 55th birthday, she asked his wife, Laurie Baird, to surprise him with a day at the fire department for his 60th birthday.

“It was as much for me as it was for him,” said Laurie Baird.

On his birthday, she told him that his gift was too big to be put in the house.

On Feb 25, she drove her husband to the number one fire department where he spent the day, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., as

a firefighter. After the shift, the fire truck dropped him off at his house.

“I was happy to help him out and fulfill his childhood dream,” said Tom O’Hara, fire captain for the number one station. He enjoyed having Baird at the station with him. “It was great to see the excitement and joy on his face ... it brings back your childhood dreams and wants.”

O’Hara and the other firefighters that day talked to Baird and walked him through a normal day. They did not get any calls, so they visited the other fire stations and introduced him to the other firefighters. They showed him their equipment and explained how it works and why the use it.

“I appreciate them a heck of a lot more,” said Baird after seeing what they do on a daily basis. His favorite part of the experience was being welcomed so graciously by the department and getting to be a part of their family for a day.

Laurie Baird spoke highly about the fire department and setting up the day for Brad.

When he got home, the family celebrated his birthday and had a special cake from Giant Eagle made for him.

Kymberly Hoffman and Robert Switka, both of Boardman, were united in marriage Sept. 30, 2017, during a ceremony that was officiated by the Rev. Robert Quaintance at Good Hope Lutheran Church. A reception took place that evening at the Vineyards at Pine Lake.

The groom is a son of the late Robert G. Switka. Kenneth and Karla Hoffman of Boardman are the parents of the bride.

The bride wore an ivory and gold lace gown that featured a a sheer back detailed with buttons. It was embellished with beaded lace appliques and a Swarovksi crystal sash. The skirt extended to a chapel train, and a matching headpiece held her fingertip veil.

Tessa Lowry was maid of honor. Bridemaids were Elise Keller; Elizabeth Kelly, and Emily Wollett, the bride’s cousins; Amanda Treharn; and Jamie Garrod. Julie Basissta and Leelee Marucci, cousins of the bride, were junior bridesmaids, and flower girls were Skyla and Annaliese Rothaar, also cousins of the bride.

The attendants’ dresses were champagne and blush.
