Art show reception to be June 3 The Davis Family YMCA in Boardman is hosting a reception for its annual Centered: Slightly Off-Center art show at the McClurg Road facility on June 3 from 12:30-2 p.m. The show features more than 50 paintings by residents of Antonine Villages, Briarfield at Ashley Circle, the Inn at Glenellen, the Inn at Ironwood and the Inn at Poland Way. The exhibit runs from June 3-30. The reception will include the opportunity to meet the artists, music by the Classical Strings, light refreshments and an awards ceremony with cash prizes courtesy of Denise DeBartolo York.

Students Leadership Challenge 2018 In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally

when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations.

No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor - $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700.

West Boulevard Elementary had their annual science fair in the school’s gymnasium on May 17.

Each of the school’s fourth grade students participated in the science fair project, which they completed in small sections throughout the school year. All of the students set up displays for the projects.

“It gives the students a chance to have a hands-on idea of what science is all about,” said sci-

For example, student Danny Hagerty wanted to know what type of popcorn popped the best. He guessed what the answer would be. For his experiment, he popped three different brands of popcorn using the same equipment and timer setting for each one. He recorded his findings on his board and handed out popcorn as he presented at the fair.

The school had water and cookies for all attendees at the event. The fair ran concurrently with the school’s book fair, so the families could also buy books while at the school.

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers.

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade.

The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9. The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60. A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:3011:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The PLYMC organized their annual Summer Discover y program for months May to July to encourage reading among all ages.

The program runs through all branches of the library and offers prizes to all readers.

The library will give children, teens and adults chances to visit different programs at the various branches.

They reward a ll ages for both reading and attending events.

The program brought in 4,603 children participants in 2017. They also had 612 teens and 849 adults. The library wants to help prevent any loss during the summer between school years, so they try to keep the school aged participants active in learning.

The librar y has different incentive levels for each age group. Children are rewarded for reading ten, t went y and thirty books, with the first prize being a free book.

Similarly, teens get rewarded for finishing five, 10 and 15 books, with different prizes, such as a phone charger with multiple cables.

Once a child has read thirty books, they will be invited to a special breakfast. This year’s guest for the breakfast is Marc Brown, the author of the “Arthur” book series. Children will get to meet the famous children’s author.

“If a nyone is look ing for something to do this summer, the library is the place to be,” said Josephine Nolf, the Director of Youth Services and Programs with the PLYMC. She said the library works hard to plan programs for everyone throughout all 15 branches.

The children programs meet various educational content standards. Some programs reach many branches, such as the Tales of King Arthur and Rock Out with the Green Team programs.

They also have adult and teen programs, including a presentation from sportswriter Terry Pluto.

They will also bring in author Deanna Adams to speak about the area’s connection to rock ‘n’ roll, with bands like Glass Ha rp a nd Devo. The teens will have their own special Decades Rewind Party at the Poland library.

Many of the programs focus on music, as this year’s theme for the Summer Discovery is “Reading Rocks.” Children’s musician Jim Gill will visit the Main and Austintown library bra nches. The PLY MC w ill also have a presentation from Sogbety Diomande, a West African drummer.

The PLY MC receives support from donors and sponsors, such as Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Rotary clubs of Austintown, Boardman, Canfield and Poland, as well as the Friends of the PLY MC, Austintown Library, Boardman Library and Poland Library, help fund the program.

School says “no” to drugs and “yes” to positive influences

Cardinal Mooney High School had their annual Yes Fest in the gymnasium and auditorium to promote a positive lifestyle on April 11.

The program aimed to get students to say no to drugs and say yes to other positive opportunities in their lives. The event featured three speakers in the auditorium and 40 agencies in the gym.

“We want the students to stay away from drugs and get involved in the community,” said Ruth Mastriana, one of the three staff members on the Yes Fest Committee. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids to know what the community offers.”

The committee features 35 students and three staff members. Students apply to be a part of the committee and the staff chooses who they feel will be the best candidates for the group.

On the day of the event, the students welcomed all visitors at the doorway and assisted the staff in making sure all speakers and agencies had everything they needed.

The agencies in the g ym ranged from mental health centers, such as Alta Behavioral Healthcare and Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic, to law enforcement, such as the Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force, to animal organizations, such as the Humane Society Animal Charity and Angels for Animals, among many others.

Having those 40 organizations in the gym allowed the students to see the opportunities for ser-

vice in the community. The students seemed to enjoy their time in the gym, as they got to exercise, pet animals and learn more about their community.

The school invited the YMCA, which brought in workout materials, such as stretch bands, for the students to use. They had boxing gloves for students to exercise and push themselves.

The ODOT spokesman Brent Kovacs and Ohio Highway Patrol trooper Dan DeLuca brought a driving simulator to the school to show how distractions impair driving. Students took turns trying to text and drive in the simulator without making any infractions.

DeLuca said they highway patrol will use the simulator in other school assemblies to show the dangers of drunk driving and distracted driving. Kovacs brought a number of information based pamphlets with him to show the statistics on teenage driving incidents and incidents caused by distractions. He said that texting and driving is more dangerous than drinking and driving and poses a serious hazard for young drivers, who tend to be more likely to text and drive.

Lt. Jered Sutton, the Canfield Post Commander for the Highway State Patrol, Guy Bernie, the Director of the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence, and Donald Slocum, also with the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence, spoke to students in the auditorium. They began with an exercise and then talked individually.

Bernie and Sutton led the students through an activity called “43 Seconds to Addiction.” The

exercise gave a representation to the students about the dangers of addiction. They handed out sheets of paper, which the students ripped into 12 pieces.

They wrote three people dear to them, three possessions they admire, three activities they enjoy and three personal attributes they like about themselves using the 12 pieces. Bernie and Sutton walked the students through an example of addiction and had the them tear a piece of paper until they were left with just one piece left. It showed how drugs can cause people to lose the things they love.

After the game, Bernie explained the game to the students and what it represented. Then, Sutton gave statistics on overdoses in the state. He said the Highway Patrol has shifted its view from traffic violations to making a stand against the drug crisis in the state.

He had a small number of students stand in the front of the stage. He explained that these would be representative of the number of vehicular deaths in the state in a given year. The other students in the room, a significantly higher number, represented the deaths due to drugs in the year. He told the students some things they can do to help end the drug crisis as well.

Finally, Slocum spoke about his life and struggles with addiction. He is a two time convicted felon and recovering addict. He explained that he is only now starting to get his life on track.

He warned the students that addiction is “a battle for the rest of your life.”

He made a transition into what makes him feel fulfilled today:

Pinwheels for Prevention raises awareness

The Holiday Inn hosted the 13th annual Pinwheels for Prevention event on April 13 to raise awareness for child abuse and neglect prevention.

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center and Mahoning County Children Services join together each year for the event during National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in April. This year’s event included speakers from each agency as well as speakers from other organizations. They use pinwheels for the event because it is the national representation of child abuse prevention.

Jennifer Kollar of Mahoning County Children Services said child abuse and neglect are serious problems, but the program allowed them to celebrate the 2280 people who advocated for children in Mahoning County.

The Boardman jazz II ensemble has performed at the Pinwheels for Prevention several times. This year, they played a series of jazz standards and closed their performance with a version of “With a Little Help From My Friends” based on Joe Cocker’s rendition of The Beatles song at Woodstock.

They use the time to show support to the children as well.

The program featured an invocation by Reverend Lewis Macklin, performances by the Boardman jazz II ensemble, a mayoral proclamation, a community spotlight award and keynote speaker David Kohout.

Kohout, the founder and executive director of Talk is Cheap and author of “Standing in the Presence of Greatness,” spoke about the greatness in children, as he does through his nonprofit organization Talk is Cheap.

He believes that we need to help the “future beaker bumpers,” or the future generation.

Kollar presented the community spotlight award to East High School’s Junior ROTC program to recognize their commitment to the organizations during National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.

For the last seven years, they have helped plant pinwheels in Boardman Park at the beginning of April to help raise awareness of child abuse, often in harsh weather including as snow and heavy rain. They also have done a presentation of the national colors and lead the Pledge of Allegiance during the Pinwheels for Prevention events.

Along with the East Junior ROTC, the BHS jazz band has performed at the event in several, nonconsecutive years. Di-

rector Thomas Ruggieri said he feels honored to perform at the event. They played the National Anthem at the beginning of the event and several songs later in the program.

He said it is always difficult to choose music for the event, but this year he knew how he wanted to close the performance. During the marching season, the band played a portion of “With a Little Help From My Friends,” based on Joe Cocker’s performance at Woodstock. He arranged a full version of the song for the event.

The event also featured Bull, the President of the Erie Shores Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), and Dawn Turnage, city parks director. Bull spoke on behalf of BACA and presented the “Biker’s Creed.”

Turnage gave the mayoral proclamation for Mayor Jamael Tito Brown, who could not attend event.

Andrea Mistovich of the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center made the opening remarks and Kollar gave the closing remarks.

Mistovich said she wants the event to show that each person can help prevent child abuse.

Kollar and Mistovich organize the event each year. Citizens can advocate on behalf of a child they know or suspect is suffering abuse or neglect by contacting either of the organizations.

Kymberly Hoffman and Robert Switka, both of Boardman, were united in marriage Sept. 30, 2017, during a ceremony that was officiated by the Rev. Robert Quaintance at Good Hope Lutheran Church. A reception took place that evening at the Vineyards at Pine Lake.

The groom is a son of the late Robert G. Switka. Kenneth and Karla Hoffman of Boardman are the parents of the bride.

The bride wore an ivory and gold lace gown that featured a a sheer back detailed with buttons. It was embellished with beaded lace appliques and a Swarovksi crystal sash. The skirt extended to a chapel train, and a matching headpiece held her fingertip veil.

Tessa Lowry was maid of honor. Bridemaids were Elise Keller; Elizabeth Kelly, and Emily Wollett, the bride’s cousins; Amanda Treharn; and Jamie Garrod. Julie Basissta and Leelee Marucci, cousins of the bride, were junior bridesmaids, and flower girls were Skyla and Annaliese Rothaar, also cousins of the bride.

The attendants’ dresses were champagne and blush.
