Jump start your 4th of July with “Just Friends” The public is invited to a picnic/concert with “Just Friends” on July 1 at A La Cart Catering, located on State Route 62 in Canfield. “Just Friends” is a volunteer community chorus, directed by Jodine Pilmer, and has been performing at local assisted living and nursing homes for the past nine months. Its director and members have vast choral and theater experience and love to share it with the residents and staff of those facilities.

There are costs involved with their mission, so the Chorus wants to sing with you at this event to raise funds.

The event starts at 1 p.m. with burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, fruit, dessert and beverage. The hourlong concert will begin at 2 p.m. The cost is $20 (tip included). Admission for the concert only is $12. Reservations for either choice are required and can be made by calling 330-533-8789.

Find and sell treasures at trunk sale Sell your garage sale type items from the trunk of your car in the parking lot or inside the Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St, in Canfield. There will be 50 spaces available in the parking lot for venders to bring a vehicle or tent to sell your own items. Spaces inside church (23 available) are a first come first serve basis.

Tables will be provided. The sale will

take place on Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost is $10 per unit (table inside or space outside in parking lot).

CHC celebrates Student Appreciation Day

C.H. Campbell Elementary School students were treated to an ice cream sundae bar during the school’s annual Student Appreciation Day on May 18.

The ice cream bar was prov ided by the school’s PTA, and included such toppings

as chocolate sauce, sprinkles, crushed Oreos, gummy worms, whipped cream and the cherry on top.

Taking advantage of the sunshine, the students enjoyed ice cream sundae bar outside in the afternoon and then got an extra half an hour to play on the playground.

Several PTA parent volun-

teers helped the students prepare their sundaes.

“We have almost 40 PTA volunteers helping throughout the day. They have been awesome and we couldn’t have done it without them ,” said Cathy Flynn, Student Appreciation Day chairperson.

tion Day takes place annually to thank the students for being good students and having a great school year.

“It’s a fun day for the parents to say thank you to the students for all their hard work all year long. The kids love it and what better way to finish a school year than with ice cream,” Flynn said.

In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.”

Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley.

Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville.

A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations. No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor - $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700.

The PLYMC organized their annual Summer Discover y program for months May to July to encourage reading among all ages.

The program runs through all branches of the library and offers prizes to all readers.

The library will give children, teens and adults chances to visit different programs at the various branches.

They reward a ll ages for both reading and attending events.

The program brought in 4,603 children participants in 2017. They also had 612 teens and 849 adults. The library wants to help prevent any loss during the summer between school years, so they try to keep the school aged participants active in learning.

The librar y has different incentive levels for each age group. Children are rewarded for reading ten, t went y and thirty books, with the first prize being a free book.

Similarly, teens get rewarded for finishing five, 10 and 15 books, with different prizes, such as a phone charger with multiple cables.

Once a child has read thirty books, they will be invited to a special breakfast. This year’s guest for the breakfast is Marc Brown, the author of the “Arthur” book series. Children will get to meet the famous children’s author.

“If a nyone is look ing for something to do this summer, the library is the place to be,” said Josephine Nolf, the Director of Youth Services and Programs with the PLYMC. She said the library works hard to plan programs for everyone throughout all 15 branches.

The children programs meet various educational content standards. Some programs reach many branches, such as the Tales of King Arthur and Rock Out with the Green Team programs.

They also have adult and teen programs, including a presentation from sportswriter Terry Pluto.

They will also bring in author Deanna Adams to speak about the area’s connection to rock ‘n’ roll, with bands like Glass Ha rp a nd Devo. The teens will have their own special Decades Rewind Party at the Poland library.

Many of the programs focus on music, as this year’s theme for the Summer Discovery is “Reading Rocks.” Children’s musician Jim Gill will visit the Main and Austintown library bra nches. The PLY MC w ill also have a presentation from Sogbety Diomande, a West African drummer.

The PLY MC receives support from donors and sponsors, such as Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Rotary clubs of Austintown, Boardman, Canfield and Poland, as well as the Friends of the PLY MC, Austintown Library, Boardman Library and Poland Library, help fund the program.

Square Dance event on June 9 The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on June 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles.

Ed Pabst will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/ low dance with tips for new dancers and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. There is a $6 donation per person at the door.

Hilltop Elementary School students and Principal Joe Maroni celebrated the 20th year of the CHRISTIE Campaign quite fashionably on May 4.

The CHRISTIE Campaign (Children Helping Readers in Situations That Involve Everyone) is a read-a-thon program, during which students collect pledges. This year the theme was “Share the ExperienceREAD!” The student body was challenged to read 100,000 minutes, which they accomplished and went beyond. The students were rewarded with an assembly and some fun with Maroni.

“It is my understanding that you all have done some reading the past month, and now I do something in return. I really don’t know what’s going on, so I am going to hand the floor over to Mrs. Creed,” Maroni said.

Charn Creed, Hilltop Elementary School first-grade teacher, addressed the students.

“You should be proud of yourselves. Your hard work has brought us to this assembly. This is the 20th year for the CHRISTIE Campaign and do you realize it’s been going on longer than you’ve been alive?!

The purpose of the CHRISTIE Campaign is to raise money to buy books for Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Val-

ley. Over the past 20 years, Hilltop has raised $45,252.47, which was used to by 18,748 books,” Creed said.

Moving onto the business at hand, Creed let the students and Maroni in on what they were in for at the assembly.

“You have demonstrated your great reading skills to be able to raise money to buy books this year. You were challenged to read 100,000 minutes during the month of April. You came together to read 86,857 minutes at home. Combined with your reading minutes at school, you have read close to 200,000 minutes. Because you are such good readers, you see Mr. Maroni on stage. Because of your hard work, you have held up your end of the bargain and being the good sport he is, he is now going to hold up his end of the bargain,” Creed said.

Creed went onto explain that she had chosen the book “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” for Maroni to read to the students. After Maroni read the book, Creed had a surprise for him, and the students.

Creed told the students she picked out some other books she thought they would like, but they weren’t going to read them today. They were going to choose certain fashion choices from the books and put them on Mr. Maroni, essentially dress-

ing him up literature-style.

The books Creed chose were “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” “Junie B. Jones Aloha Ha Ha,” “Fancy Nancy,” “The Mitten,” “Strega Nona” and “Amazing Grace.”

“Would you like to share the experience with Mr. Maroni?

Reading is not only a thing we do, we can also act the stories out. Mr. Maroni is going to act some out, but he is not dressed for the occasion. These books will influence the costume Mr. Maroni wears today,” Creed told the students.

Much to the delight of the students, Creed proceeded to dress Maroni in swim fins from “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” a grass skirt from “Junie B. Jones Aloha Ha Ha,” a fancy shirt from “Fancy Nancy,” giant mittens from “The Mitten,” a babushka from “Strega Nona” and a feather boa from “Amazing Grace.”

After Maroni was properly dressed, Creed read the madeup story of “The Little Principal Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” to the students.

To close the assembly, Creed encouraged the students to keep reading.

“We hope you had fun. You must continue to read. To be a good reader you have to practice. And to be a better person, you must help others. With the CHRISTIE Campaign, you have done both,” Creed said.

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighthgrade. The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9.

The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60.

A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40.

Kymberly Hoffman and Robert Switka, both of Boardman, were united in marriage Sept. 30, 2017, during a ceremony that was officiated by the Rev. Robert Quaintance at Good Hope Lutheran Church. A reception took place that evening at the Vineyards at Pine Lake.

The groom is a son of the late Robert G. Switka. Kenneth and Karla Hoffman of Boardman are the parents of the bride.

The bride wore an ivory and gold lace gown that featured a a sheer back detailed with buttons. It was embellished with beaded lace appliques and a Swarovksi crystal sash. The skirt extended to a chapel train, and a matching headpiece held her fingertip veil.

Tessa Lowry was maid of honor. Bridemaids were Elise Keller; Elizabeth Kelly, and Emily Wollett, the bride’s cousins; Amanda Treharn; and Jamie Garrod. Julie Basissta and Leelee Marucci, cousins of the bride, were junior bridesmaids, and flower girls were Skyla and Annaliese Rothaar, also cousins of the bride.

The attendants’ dresses were champagne and blush.
